Relaunch of the WotC Skirmish game

Vic Wertz was kind enough to mention about some developments revealed at Gencon that includes the relaunch of the DDM skirmish game.

EN World Forum

I missed this particular piece of news. If anyone has more information about this, it would be welcome.

I think the only official info out there came from the Gen Con announcement and the public playtest; I think the ENWorld thread covers everything in the announcement, and my understanding is that the playtest didn't reveal much (if anything) about the minis sets.

Thanks Vic for your clarity on this. It is the miniatures that drive Skirmish type games. More information about the miniatures from Wizards would create more of a buzz for them. As it is I am satisfied with the great buzz I am getting from Paizo. :-)

WotC had a poll up on the D&D home page this morning about the new skirmish product.

It sounds like their current idea is that the different squads/factions come in their own boxes of 12 minis (presumably the same style pre-painted plastic as DDM was, hopefully some new sculpts), cards, tiles, etc. for about $45 each. It seems a little high for one squad, a little under $4 per mini if you ignore the other components. It sounds like each of those sets has between one and three large minis (2 inch base) and the rest are small/medium. I guess they also plan to have some starter set?

The new minis game also doesn’t use dice (!), just various command cards. I guess both sides put out their cards and then reveal to determine what happens?

The classic card game War! - now with pre-painted fantasy miniatures! :)

Card games seem to be Wotc's specialty more so than RPGs of late. $45 is way too much to pay for just one side of a game. Back in the DDM skirmish days, you could start playing with a Wardrums Starter for $20. IMHO they would do better with a five or six piece warband at half the price. Or as Greyhaze mentioned on another board, get two six piece factions for the $45, so you start playing immediately. $90 is a price point beyond reach for many in today's economy for what is essentially a tabletop game.

I think $45 is very much a reasonable price.. That ends up being actually cheaper then Pathfinder Battles Minis, though if the quality is anything like the past, they will be of lesser quality.

Though I do think it is a mistake to put 12 of them together to bring it to $45, if that is what they are doing at that price. That brings it way outside somes price range. It would most likely be better idea to keep these at 4-6 a box.

$45 is a reasonable price for what you get. No question! But to have to pay another $45 for the other faction just to begin to play is pushing it for many. $90 to play essentially a board game is too much at this level. This new Skirmish game is not a full RPG or as detailed as an Advanced Squad Leader.

However, we are all entitled to our opinions.

Is *anything* as detailed as ASL?

No. It is better indexed than an encyclopedia. They truly covered every detail. If I ever get stranded on a desert island with one other person, I want the ASL Rulebook, some map boards and the Germans and Russians orders of battle. If there are several people on the island then I want the Pathfinder Core Rulebook, the Bestiary, a set of dice and box full of miniatures.

A late (and unrelated) comment, but really: I enjoy a good game as much as anyone, but if I'm going to be stranded on a desert island, forget rulebooks, dice, and miniatures. I want a woman, some kind of shelter, and LOTS of non-perishable food! :-)

I think I'd rather have a boat.
