Awarding Treasure from "In Service to Lore"

I preparing the In Service to Lore chronicle sheet for my players, I noticed that two of the five treasure items listed are carried by Auntie Baltwin. Although it's possible, it seems highly unlikely that most encounters with her will end in combat and, therefore, the party acquiring said items. Should the party really be denied the items in question if they don't fight her, even if they did uncover all of her dirty secrets? This is a great social conflict encounter that avoids the need to resort to combat, but then seems to reward unnecessary violence in the end.

Spoiler:
I’m assuming you are referring to the Potion of Invisibility and the Scroll of Remove Disease?

Since both items are on the always available list, and are less than 500gp, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Yes, those are the items in question. However, since the spells are 2nd and 3rd level respectively, they don't fall under the list of Always Available Items. Additionally, while it shouldn't take long for the characters to accumulate enough prestige to reach the 500gp threshold, they still have a few scenarios to go before they reach that point.

I realize this isn't a pivotal issue. I guess it's more of a technicality that I'm curious to hear other peoples' thoughts on.

PCs could steal the items from her, or gain them from blackmail or intimidation. I would cross the items off the Chronicle if the PCs didn't obtain them during the scenario. It should be noted that the PCs will not lose any gold off of the Chronicle sheet if this does happen. This was not implied by the OP, I just want the point reinforced.

Well, true enough they are not always available, but the 500gp limit is 4 or less Fame, so as soon as they earn their 2 Fame from this scenario, they can purchase the items with gold without a chronicle.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

This is part of what the Reward Creative Solutions section on page 25 of the Guide refers to. If the players are successful in an encounter in a way other than is intended by the scenario writer, then it is your job to reward their creativity and come up with a way for them to find the treasure they would have normally gotten from completing the encounter the intended way.

Spoiler:
funny thing is though, the intended way to solve the encounter with Gerty Baltwin is to NOT fight her.

The "4 or less" line of that table is unclear and will be corrected going forward. You can not purchase items from beyond the Always Available list with fewer than 4 Fame.

Ah, thanks Mark.

In light of this news, then yeah, you gotta cross the items off the chronicle, despite the fact:

Spoiler:
the encounter is set up as a social encounter, and you gotta fight her to get the loot.

So, always kill old ladies who run orphanages, then loot them. Got it. I guess my sociopath Magus companion was right.

I would think that if the players uphold the ideals of the Silver Crusade (the ones that sent them to check out Auntie) that they could get the chance to buy the "Meds" that would have gone to her in the NEXT shipment. As the Judge isn't my"...job to reward their creativity and come up with a way for them to find the treasure they would have normally gotten from completing the encounter the intended way." (in this case looting/robbing the little old lady running the orphanage?)

Grand Lodge 2/5

I've run into the same issue. Reading "Creative solutions" on p. 34 of the PFSGtOP, I will leave them on the chronicle sheet. I will not punish them for not killing an old lady.

In future runs of this scenario, I will have the Silver Crusade reward the PCs with those two items should they complete the encounter successfully and without aquiring the items in another way.

Holy necro, Batman!

Grand Lodge 2/5

Was I supposed to not do that? I just thought I'd chime in for the next person who searches that and looks for how others have dealt with it. :)

surprised me... I was the next to the last poster, and didn't remember posting this! Took me a minute to realize I had posted the above in 2011!

I've been through that scenario three times as a player. I went back and checked my chronicle sheets, those two items are there on all three. I know in one run, we had a paladin with us who would not let another player's character take the documentary evidence of the old woman's malfeasance (that would be stealing) but failed to convince her to turn herself in. We'd not given the parcel to her and withheld it from her when she refused to allow us to administer the medicines directly to the children (rather than giving them to her for her to administer and allowing her to sell them instead). When we returned to the temple and returned the parcel, we were told that the paladin's word alone was insufficient without further proof against Auntie, but that we could keep the scroll of remove disease that had been in the parcel.

I don't know how the potion of invisibility remained, however.

2/5

Well, if one of the PCs caught a disease from the rats at the warehouse, I have Auntie spot it and use the scroll in an attempt to butter up the PCs.

As for the potion, I've always forgotten to have it drop somewhere else, but I've been keeping it on the chronicle sheets since the PCs successfully complete the encounter.
