Velcro as alternative to magnets?

Miniatures

The Exchange

I am trying to find ways to safely store and carry my painted minis and see a lot of folks use magnets. Has anyone tried using adhesive velcro tabs for this purpose, and if so how did it work?

Are you contemplating putting the velcro hooks on the base of your mini and sticking them to velcro fuzz in the case?

I suppose that would work, but I'm skeptical of the long term viability of it. It seems the velcro would eventually peel away from the mini and/or the hooks would get smashed flat from use.

I have a number of ways I carry miniatures around, but I've mostly settled on foam trays that allow me to put individual minis in their own protective cell. I am now using a Games Workshop case with three layers of foam trays which holds about 100 medium sized minis but before getting that case I used to just make individual foam trays and use foam core posterboard on the top and bottom and a couple of large velcro straps to hold them together for travel, then I'd lay them out on the table or floor during game play.

How many minis are you needing to transport? Are they mostly plastic or metal? Are they mostly medium or do you have some huge, gargantuan or colossal ones?

I was thinking of putting the fuzz on the mini base and the hooks on the transport case. Right now its only a few painted metal minis (Reaper) that I have recently painted and plan to use in my Sunday Pathfinder game for PCs. I am considering going foam as well, for when I have to transport lots of painted metal minis. For now its only maybe 2. I think I am going to go the magnet / washer route so they disengage without yanking on the mini itself, while staying stable enough for the hour long drive back and forth to the game. Thanks for the input BB, and I love your Dr. Frankenstein style minis btw.

Heh, thanks for the kind words about my minis. I just completed a silver dragon from a lizard with foam wings and epoxy putty neck and wing bones. Came out pretty nice I think. And another lion with duck wings and scorpion tail, also came out pretty nice. And I am just getting started on the velociraptor dragon that will be a colossal dragon of some kind... I'm not real pleased with the foam wings on that one yet, but I'm still working on them. But in general the velociraptor makes a great dragon body.

My transport mechanism for just a few minis for a long time was a plastic hobby case with individual compartments. For the really delicate ones I just put some cotton balls in the compartment to keep them from jostling around. Seemed to work fine.
