"Hey but maybe my idea is just so awesome they will want someone else to work on it even if I can't!" That is the kind of misguided fan boy misconceptions this thread is hopefully dispelling.

The only value is a manuscript.

Dead on the spot, finger in the wound, you are generally good at this... dissecting...of course you are, it´s your job..

and of course it had to be you ...and me...
(sorry, i really enjoyed your critique thread enourmously, didn´t come to me there, thankfully)

I´ll have to take a sabbatical to do a worthy manuscript. Was i trying to find a way around the obvious answer?
Take a sabbatical ! Now everyone ! Anybody ?

I talked about payrate on my blog today, and I am wondering what do new writers think their payrate should be?

Standard rate for a new writer is $0.02/word, and I think that's entirely fair. Paying more for writing is good when they have the CV to back it up, but I don't know if paying more for writing is going to help when it's the editing that is the main problem. Even the best writing can come out like crap if the editor's not doing their job well.

Heh heh ...

It's like the British Leyland approach to making cars: "Sir, our electrics are unreliable, and changing gears with our transmission is like stirring a bucket of coal. What should we do?" "I've got just the solution: leather seats and polished wood trim on the console." "Brilliant."

That is NOT the kind of inquiry or submission you do to real publishers.

I won´t do this to a real publisher, promise. Not to any publisher. Swear.
I believe you. But the publisher you submit to won't know that.

Sorry for being unclear. My second statement was refering to the second sentence i quoted from you.

I meant NOT to sent " professionally insulting submissions" (as i understood it at least) to any publishers.
Was afraid you would find out and find me and do what you do best... just paranoia, i´m sure.
Hope you believe me anyway.

Thank you for your extensive answers, Mr. Peterson

PS: I still see this single green all-seeing eye. And it winks.

Here's a link to the Gen Con Paizo Seminar on Writing for Paizo on the Chimera Games podcast at 3.5 Private Sanctuary.

Incidentally, I'm the 'half-Japanese' freelancer mentioned half-way in the seminar... kind of cool.

Interesting.

On a slight tangent, I recall an article a while back regarding pay rates for RPG writers compared to fiction writers.

I could have sworn it was by Dancey, but I could very likely be wrong about that.

Part of the article dealt with RPG writers transitioning to fiction writing, and how RPG writers shouldn't expect fiction rates.

Anyone recall this?

Excellent forum and thanks for all the insights. I never thought that these avenues into the industry were available.
