Has anyone tried the Dresden Files RPG?

Other RPGs

I've seen it at my FLGS and looked at it a bit. It looks interesting.
I'm a big fan of the novels so I was wondering if anyone has played it and how it plays (complex magic or simple rules)? How the characters develop, is it story awards or more XP related? Complex character creation, backstories, weaknesses, ect.?

Just looking for an idea about how fun overall it is and what people are doing in their games.

Thanks for any info you care to share. :)

Sovereign Court

I have some friends who are playing it on a night that I wasn't able to go and so far it looks like it's a fun system. It's Fate based and focuses a lot on story telling. The players help make each others characters via a cameo in their background and also do a lot to help create the world that they're playing in too.

The book alone is quite a hoot to read given that Harry, Billy and Bob all make comments all over it.

1) It owns

2) It is drastically different from D&D, so if D&D is the only tabletop game you've played, you're going to have to break out of some D&D-ism habits first.

I love the dfrpg, it's very story based and rules lite. However, magic use is pretty complicated, it's not hard to boil down but the staggering array of options ia initially jarring. Overall I recommend. Was considering running one as a pbo, but I'm not great at writing mystery adventures so... but I may. I give it 5 stars and hardily recommend it

This game sounds interesting. I may pick it up tomorrow just to check it out more thoroughly. Assuming my FLGS has a copy in. They have been carrying only one at a time. I could look online but I like to support this store. It's the best gamers store in town by far. I guess they consider me a regular now because they give me a 10% discount at the register on my goodies.

Thanks for the insight to the game :)

I picked up the 'Our World' (2nd book) and it's actually a fun read. My FLGS didn't have the 'core' rulebook in stock this week. Even has some interesting information into characters and monsters in the novels. the hand witten notes by Dresden and others in the margins are pretty funny. Nice artwork as well.

The only odd thing is I noticed that pages 38 to 48 (I think, I don't have it with me right now) are duplicated in the book. No pages are missing elsewhere, just 10 pages duplicated.

Bonus extra material! YAY?

I'm running a play by post Dresden Files game and I am happy with the rules so far. It is very, very different from D&D, but that's a good thing in my opinion. So far I've had one combat, a social situation, and some investigation and I feel like the system is a good fit for the game I want to run. Also, the rulebooks are excellent, I love all the little margin notes from the characters and agree that 'Our World' is a good read.

After looking more closely at my 'our world' book I found that I am missing material. Alot of important things from page 16 to 33 or 34.
I returned the book to my FLGS on tuesday and one of the owners was kind enough to order a replacement for their shipment on thursday, and I'll be able to swap out books next time I'm there. I also ordered the first 'core rule'(not sure what the first book is called) book as well.

She was happy that I brought the missbound book to her attention and wanted to let the publisher know about the problem.

I'm happy to get the replacement and first book so quickly and excited to read them. The Dresden Files material is great stuff to read about no matter if it's novels or gameing material.

I still have to read through Our World, but finished Your Story awhile back and it was a hoot! Don't forget to check out the website, and especially the downloads with lots of handy resources and even a couple of one-shot adventures. Cheers!

FWIW, it was voted Best rpg at Origins.

I really enjoy it but then, I've like all the FATE system based games that I own (Dresden, Spirit of the Century, Starblazer Adventures, Legends of Anglerre). Ultminately, it comes down to if you like the FATE system. If you don't, I doubt that any game will make enough changes to it that you'll like it.

Very true. I was lukewarm going into FATE with Dresden Files (like the DF novels, but didn't love the system at first glance), and my group just didn't care for the system at all. They felt it hampered immersion since many intended uses of the system feel like metagaming to those coming from more traditional RPGs. I might be willing to play DF again sometime, but I'll never try to GM a FATE game again with my current group of players.

If anyone is interested I will be gming a dresden files pbp. Drop ny and give me a shout if you like it.
