I remember the last round of layoffs from WotC generating the same mean-spirited jabs as this most recent rumor.
The edition wars rage on for no good reason.
A new generation, irrespective of edition, is maligned because of their background in MMO-parlance.
Within a given edition, extremists from both styles-of-play tear into each other like it somehow matters how other people have fun.
There are chicken-littles decrying the destruction of the game over rules of little consequence — their constant pestering has driven the staff to avoid providing guidance in the manner that they so kindly once did.
Worst of all, the frustrated moderate posters clutter the board with well-meaning but ultimately fruitless peace-making rants.
--
I know it's just that I have a new job with scads of free internet time, and that I'm bored so I spend more time here recently. But for the love of the game, can we please chill the hell out?
Please, for your own sake and for the sake of others, be a kind, well-adjusted person who wants to help. Don't be a dick.

Pointing out that the board has a load of recognizable problems rarely seems to affect the demeanor that certain posters comport themselves with. Sometimes I wish that Paizo would remember that this is a private board and banhammer some folks, but then other days I'm really glad that there isn't some evil gestapo out to destroy any poster whose opinion differs from someone's very vocal position.
Making value judgements on speculation is rarely going to help, though. That's the part that bugs me. Speculate all you want, but please keep the "badwrongfun" to yourselves.

Someone just lost their job. No matter what the reason or the rumor, Bill S had been working there for 18, count em, 18 years. If I got canned after 18 years no matter what the reason, I'd be bummed. Having a bunch of strangers reveling in the schadenfreude of my leaving because they dislike my company would bum me out even worse. So, players stop ya hatin!

Best of luck, I'll try to tone it down myself a bit.
I look at other gaming mediums who've undergone similar instance of edition change ups, etc, and really I haven't found anything more venomous and spite-filled than the D&D edition wars.
For example, I play Final Fantasy XI: Online. Last fall, FF XIV was released and got horrible reviews. I'm unable to play it due to insufficient PC specs so I can't say firsthand. Point being, here we have the 8 year old FFXI, and the brand new(and very shiny) FFXIV. The FF community disagrees here and there as to the quality of the game, but I've seen little to no evidence of any sort of attacks on fellow gamers and such elitism. The worst I've seen looks like:
P1: "Dude, FFXIV is garbage! The engine is terrible! Square-Enix is going to go bankrupt!"
P2: "Nah, I kinda like it."
P1: "Whatever, lemme know when they fix it."
That community spends more time ripping itself apart over choices made in the same game than they ever would with a "edition war." In this community alone, all I have to do is say "4e" and in come the defenders ready to wage war. Real-life relationships with decades old friends of mine were even damaged by this mess.

Just to point it out again, there are people over there who don't actually believe he got canned, laid-off, or what have you. That said, telling people to not be a dick only works on fairly moderate people who are acting out of their normal bounds, in my opinion. Why, I've even seen dicks say, Don't be a dick.

It's easy to be a pain in the rear and all-around @-hole on the internet, an unfortunate fact. It's too easy to hear what you're saying, Evil Lincoln, and then say to one's self "That doesn't apply to me! He isn't talking about me!" or "Yeah, right on, those other people need to read this!" without realizing that each of us are the culprits. Sometimes people mustneeds remember that the ability to reason does not in turn make us reasonable.

Yep, I personally think it's more likely that perhaps Carter was laid off, and Bill decided to quit in order to enable the both of them to move (and to save someone else from being laid off), or something along those lines.

There is totally a hypocrisy nod in that OP. :)
Also, this isn't just about Bill's leaving WotC. The reaction there is just a symptom of a larger issue, it think.

Guh it's all so ...infantile ..
"My game rules, your game drools!"
"My game is the real D&D!"
"Your game plays like Kingdom Hearts!"
"Well, your mom likes it when I game her all night!"
People. It. Is. A. Game. A fun and involving game, I grant. Hell, I have almost 20K posts talking about this very game. But, in the end, it is a game. Like Parcheesi.
Is it worth losing sleep and friends over?

IT IS NOT LIKE PARCHEESI!!!!
I swear to god, the next time a player sits down at my table and says "I roll to move" because all those damn kids these days are rocking out on parcheesi, and snorting it, and sexting to it, and generally ruining everything cool ever for everyone because they are young and stupid, I will tear out their liver with a spoon.

My mother was a bona fide Haight-Ashbury hippie. I grew up in the music scene and with her working at a talent agency, we hung with a lot of (*mostly dead) legends. The last thing she would ever tell someone is to cut their hair. ;)
Her culture had nothing to do with my long hair. Nor did heavy metal. I grew my hair long due to an affinity for the Tarzan story... a man who melded with the animal world at his very core. I wanted my hair long for its bestial quality.
No barnyard luvin' jokes! I don't do that anymore!
Edit: *To be clearer with my wording... We didn't hang out with legends who were already dead, because mom never was one for shoveling. She didn't have the back for it.

You still have weeks. And after all, I don't want people to go to trouble, when a Paizo gift certificate is so easy...

To the topic of 'what the heck is wrong with us?': Ego.
We are all bigots. Some more so than others... or rather some more overtly than others. Especially in the topic of a game played 'in your head' where mental fortitude seems to be a pertinent topic, we inflate ourselves above 'mere mortals'.
We overestimate ourselves and we underestimate our peers, because "how could they have given this thought as much consideration as I have". We are so busy inflating ourselves that we get caught up in our own misconceptions. We are so worried about challenges to our thoughts that we take the smallest criticism (of any kind) as a personal offense.
The biggest mistake we can make is to assume that we do what we do (geeky things) because we are superior. The reality of the situation is we do what we do because we have the time to.
I said it in another thread, but it is still somewhat relevant. Some people like to play with GI-Joes, and some people like to play with barbies. Either way they are both just playing with dolls. It all boils down to perspective.
Posted by someone who enjoys PF,4E, MtG, LoTRO, DDO, TF2; And while I didn't play with GI-Joes, I did have a massive amount of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Never played it. I did play more than a few cut throat games of Illuminati and various train games.
