Based on the tweets out of PaizoCon, its basically "Savage Species" for Pathfinder, with a bunch of races with level based progressions.

Yeeessssss

I would love to see there take on savage species.

The name is a bit,... well, .....um, .....I am not sure if "Ultimate Races" is a title I want people to read on my bockshelf

Booooo!!!

I interpreted what I read as something altogether different from Savage Species, specifically detailing options for 0-HD races like tieflings, aasimars, dhampirs or the elemental races from Bestiary 2 and to so, and not races with racial hit dice.

Hm, indeed, might call up the wrong images. Maybe Paizo should re-think that title.

terrible idea with an even worse name. savage species was horrible, one of the things i loved about pathfinder was the fact you couldn't be bugbears or trolls, i truly hope they do not do this book.
and what's up with the title? i thought you people were from seattle, where is your racial sensitivity?.
worst idea ever!

Not what I was hoping for. High level, low magic, magic items, naval, ruling domains, planar - I can thing of a number of topics I need more than a races book.

this doesnt seem like Savage Species at all

Sovereign Court

It's only the development name. They're changing the final title to Ubermenschen.

Spoiler:
Explosive Godwin Runes!

James Jacobs has made it clear that he doesn't want to use "Ultimate..." for every book. Hopefully the rest of the Paizo crew are on the same wavelength.

Ultimate Races? I'm sure that horse and chariot races will be covered, but will steampunk airship races be there as well?

Yup, and planar races (how to get from point X to point Y in Maelstrom... when geometry makes no sense there?) too.

found some more info on the internets. it wont be like savage species, it'll cover tieflings, aasimar, and the like (races without base hit dice).

whew! i was really worried there for a moment. also james jacobs said "ultimate races" is just a working title and will be changed prior to publication. on the plus side bestiary 3 might be out for christmas (a big, big might, seeing as bestiary 2 was promised for before halloween and didnt come out til after christmas last year).

How about an appendix for steeple chases?

Getting from the church of adabar to the church of Shelyn is easy enough, but getting to the church of Norborger takes some searching.

if i could remove my first post i would (don't know how, not the most computer savvy:), it was a bit reactionary i s'pose. i spent a good part of my twenties in seattle (wasn't that long ago), its just a working title, my apologies to anyone at paizo and anyone i may have pissed off i'm sorry.

So if it focuses on the "0 hd races" like aasimar, dhampir, sylph, etc. that would be even better than savage species.

yes it does sound like an awesome book (if not like savage species)

It is going to Foucus on the 0HD races, but also have info on any race that advances by character class.

They have when a post is an hour old or older you no longer can delete or edit I think.

I was trying to make a funny with your screen name. ;-)

I actually meant the *other* neighboring country... You know, the one where your stolen car is. And where they actually don't throw up when you offer them Bratwurst with Sauerkraut, as long as you have some vodka with that.

Prussia is a neighbor to us Bavarians - sadly, we all are part of the same Germany :P

I Guess he hints @ another country - starting with a P, ending with oland.
I would prefer to drive my Panzer through Austria..

0 hd you say?

Goblins! Please let there be something for these awesome fire worshiping, city raiding, dog-and-horses hating little green guys!

hello threadjack how are you...

Back to Ultimate Races(I would think Germans would like this title though I guess it would be Ultimate Race instead of Races...sorry couldn't help it) I'm glad that paizo is finally releasing a race book. It proves once again that they really do listen to the fans because there have been several requests made to James Jacobs directly in his thread about a race book and he's always seem disinterested. I love how Paizo as a company does what then fans want and not necessarily just what they want.

Juco Aki wrote:

I've always wondered about the dog hating part...

I get the horses, when your that small and something is that big...well you can get envy. That and horses genearly careful about where they drop their load...to quote a movie "I'd rather be pissed off than pissed on"

I would certainly hope that it would also have some "savage species" style option. There's a big demand for playing things like minotaurs, lizardmen, bugbears, ogres etc. Give them paragon style classes, whatever, but making them options is not a bad idea. Full on giants, dragons, mind flayers and whatnot were a bad idea, but more manageable races can add a lot to the game.

I certainly hope we would at least see options that would make some of the fodder humanoid races like hobgoblins, orcs and gnolls just as interesting mechanically as elves or dwarves.

Considering how well Paizo has reinvigorated these races with the "revisited" line, I think it's more than reasonable to make them compelling choices to play from a mechanical as well as story perspective.

I have always wanted to play a Nixie(or at least get them as a cohort)

Pixie would be cool as well and even a young dragon(small-medium size)

To me, Ultimate Races implies a different expectation on the content.

How about Uncommon Races (Revisited?) or something similar instead?

It's my impression it will cover all the core races too, so uncommon isn't the right word.

The next AP that they anounced (Skull & Bones I think) is going to have naval rules as it is a pirate based AP.

Since we just announced this book yesterday night and I haven't talked about it really at all since that point... I'm 99.5% sure I never said "Ultimate Races" is just a working title.

We'll have more information about the book in the weeks and months to come (keep watching our blog!); it's not just going to be a redo of Savage Species though.

Hm. I`d guess that the new Tian races would be included here, since they will be missing Favored Class and other crunch info for the most part (in the Tian Gazetteer). Perhaps even some more 0HD races for regions yet to be detailed, as well as some already covered... It sounds like Lizardmen will also have a presence in Southern Garund, for one. I`m not really into playing `monstrous PCs`, but having unique ways each race `approaches` each Class is a good thing, if only for NPCs.

I like the idea of including Racial HD races that advance by Class Levels... It allows a more `fine tuned` approach than just a flat Level Adjustment... And I`d honestly like to see some races with ALTERNATE Class Level advancement options, i.e. not just one class. `Paragon Levels` might be a good name for it...?

I want to see a Penultimate line. So we know that we can always anticipate that there'll be one better coming in the future. ;-)

That's the problem with branding, once you start using "Ultimate X" it becomes hard to stop.

Although the other option, "Advanced Races Guide" is likely just as offensive to some.

I'll buy the book, the contents sound excellent. What it says on the cover isn't that important.

I really hope that this book would do far more than whats just in the bestiaries as humanoid stuff.

I'm currently working on an RPG for the comic Beasts of Burden, just because I think it would be cool to step out of the shoes of normal rpgs and step into something where you have to figure out things in a waaay different light.

Like we had an adventure where there was a sleeping kobold that our group of "good" adventures robbed blind. I was thinking to myself how awesome it would be to make a party of nothing but monstrous characters and fight off parties of good adventures.

So "More about folks" it is then :)

The amusing euro-banter upstream, I'm actually quite eager to see what the actual book that comes out of this announcement contains, regardless of title (working or not).

A good treatment of exotic non-human races is essential, given the mores of the fanbase.

It was probably the countless beers I shared with Ed Greenwood, but I thought Jason said "Ultimate Racist!"

Wow, that's a rather unfortunate title.

I'd certainly think twice about putting a book called "Ultimate Races" on my Christmas wish list, given the racial diversity of my family. There's a real possibility that I'd have to explain away some rather unfortunate connotations.

I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm glad it's not "Savage Races" or something like that. But still, I have a sneaking suspicion there were no non-white people involved in the decision-making process behind this title.

Here's a bit more info from what I announced at the PaizoCon Preview Banquet.

The title is Ultimate Races.

Essentially, it has four sections.

The first provides lots of cool character stuff for the seven core races. New rules elements will provide options for players looking to develop their characters in ways that emphasize their race. This might include archetypes that allow an elf character to explore his connection to nature or magic, a dwarf character to carry on the legacy of his multi-generational clan, or a gnome to explore its connection to the First World or delve deep into its weird obsessions. New feats and spells, when appropriate, will add further depth and more exciting options. Each of the core races will receive plenty of pages and a breadth of interesting content.

The second section will provide slightly shorter but nonetheless quite significant treatments of several (meaning more than 10) "spotlight" races that make interesting and exciting player character options. Races like goblins, aasimar, tiefling, dhampyr, drow, the elemental races of Bestiary 2, and several others.

The third section includes shorter (but more than you get in the Core Rulebook) basic information that give you what you need to know (and a bit more) to play characters of EVERY OTHER 0-Hit Die creature in the Bestiary, Bestiary 2, or newly announced Bestiary 3. If you want to play a merman, we'll tell you how to pull it off with style. We'll also have some sweet weird stuff like grippli, duergar, and stryx (from the Inner Sea World Guide).

The fourth section (which I actually forgot to mention at the Preview Banquet) gives a thorough optional system that allows players and GMs to create custom races. Part of this will help you emulate more powerful creatures, but other parts will be about making wholly original creatures that advance as player characters. This will include all kinds of weird stuff, and it will be the focus of an extensive open playtest.

That's the outline as it exists today. We may be able to add in some stuff beyond this, but that's the general sense of what we're shooting for in the book.

Yay! More playtesting!

As a grand old fan of the Reverse Dungeon and related monster-themed adventuring, I am really looking forward to this.
