In today's episode of Gorbacz's Amazon Watch...

..our favourite on-line book store has the Core Rulebook unavailable for direct purchase from Amazon without any information on it being back in stock.

Its true. Thats why I ordered a new core book from Paizo, directly on Thursday.

Surely it's not already time for a 5th printing?

We've verified that Amazon has an order in transit from our distributor.

(Thanks for pointing things like this out—even though this one would have solved itself, there might be an occasion where knowing this could help!)

That's cool that they sold out again. Least now I imagine most of the new ones they get should be the latest printing I would imagine.

Odds are good, but because book trade accounts can return unsold copies to distribution, it is *possible* that our book trade distributor could receive and reship older printings at any time.

Oh yeah, that's why I said most of the new ones they get, will likely be the latest printing. I imagine a small percentage of them will be older printings. Who knows maybe even one or two first printings. :)

Looks like I should read through *all* of my email before I pass stuff on. While it is true that Amazon does have an order in transit, they *also* have a reasonable number of copies in current inventory. The reason they've taken it off direct sale is that they've been receiving customer complaints about Core Rulebooks arriving damaged, so they're suspending sales while they reevaluate how they package customer orders that include the Core Rulebook.

Nice to hear something is being done about this.

Maybe they can steal your guys new corner protectors you sent on the latest HB order. I liked those.

Heck, the styrofoam corner protectors they use for the CRB would be good, too.

Amazon tried to get weird with my Core Rulebook once. So I slapped her.

Wait...Amazon.com can't figure out how to package a big, heavy book?

:boggle:

Sadly, no.

In some cases, it's definitely their lackluster packaging - a box that's too big, with a couple of air-filled packing material deals on the bottom or top (never both!), so the thing bounces around.

In other cases, the box is tight-wrapped in cardboard that has the tear-strip, but it has "bumpers" at the ends to protect from impacts. I've opened one of those, with the package not showing ANY damage, and found the book damaged, so in that instance, we're talking something that happened prior to or during packaging.

The latter situation has happened more than a couple times, so while better overall packaging is definitely a plus, I don't see it resolving ALL issues.

When we got our 1st-printing CRB from Amazon, it was stuck in a padded envolope. Period. Truly pathetic. Fortunately, it was our table copy, while our lovingly-packaged book from Paizo was for posterity.

No way. This planet has way too much Styrofoam as it is.

I have the Amazon "top 10 in RPGs" bookmarked and I check it daily.

Recently, it makes me smile.

My beat to hell copy of the first printing shows that they needed to look into thi two years ago.

For future reference, both to you and the others that have received (and apparently kept) damaged copies from Amazon in the past, you should be aware that they will accept returns.

They'll provide a pre-paid UPS or Fedex tag for you to ship it back to them on their dime for exchange or credit.

There's absolutely no reason that you should be forced to keep a copy that they damaged in handling or due to poor packaging.

Amazon can be odd on what they consider adequate protection. I have received an order of t-shirts and underwear over-packed with air-filled packing material to photographic filters which could bounce around in a mostly empty box.

Don't be surprised at Amazon not being good at packing, or at anything else for that matter.

Their business model is based upon being easy and ubiquitous and cheap - not on quality.

Oh, come on.

I'm not trying to turn this into an Amazon pro/hate war, but comments like this are just ridiculously fallacious.

First of all, DUH, Amazon's business model is getting stuff to you cheaply. Shocker! God forbid that a business tries to do things less expensively!

Secondly, Amazon does awesomely well in virtually all areas of their operation. It's one-off items like the CRB, which, if you own one, you know that it's a HUGE book. Now, I'm not saying that they don't ship other huge books, but the added weight/size to normal books, their normal packaging doesn't always cut it.

If their business model precluded quality, then they wouldn't be taking a book off their virtual salesfloor in order to figure out how to better pack/ship it, and overall, they wouldn't remain in business.

Back to your regularly scheduled bandwagon...

Liberty's Edge

I didn't say their business model precludes quality, just that you shouldn't expect it.

They are a discounter, you get what you pay for.

My primary complaint is not with Amazon, which is clearly a giant business success story. My primary complaint is with people who buy from them because they are cheap, and then complain about the service.

It's trivially easy to get Paizo products quickly, well-packed, and with fantastic customer service - if you can find this forum, you can probably find the Paizo store, too. If you choose not to go that route that's just fine, but your expectations should be in line with reality.
-Kle.

To be fair to Amazon, the core rule book seems to be particularly easy to damage (unless anything has changed since it was first released), after only two weeks of use ours had begun to split and the hard cover was seperating from the pages and spine of the book. The book does get heavy use (a gaming group of 5+, meeting weekly), but no other gaming product we have purchased has had similar issues.

No.

A thousand times, no.

It doesn't matter the price. We're not talking Paizo Cola and Amazon Choice Cola. We're talking about the exact same product.

As such, regardless of the price, if it's being advertised as "new", you have every right to expect the same level of quality of the delivered product.

It's asinine to suggest that someone receiving a damaged copy of a book from Amazon should have to suck it up because they bought it cheaper.

Paizo is FANTASTIC, and I buy a bunch of stuff from them, but Amazon also has fantastic customer service. I'm not suggesting they're on the same level - Paizo has much more personal service, but then again, Paizo also doesn't sell at nearly the same scale as Amazon.

It's not unrealisitic in the least to expect undamaged product - and apparently, Amazon agrees, because they not only replace the damaged product on their own dime, paying for return shipping, but they're also re-evaluating the packing of this specific product to address issues.

1st and 2nd printings had weaker bindings. I know that Paizo has said that overall reports of issues are a small percentage, and that they haven't seen the issues reported, but as the owner of samples of all printing versions, and having examined the various copies that members of my gaming group have purchased, I can tell you that there is a SIGNIFICANT increase in binding quality with the 3rd and 4th printings.

My recently damaged copy from Amazon was a 4th printing, and the damage occurred prior to being put in the box.

I call b@#&&!%$, too.

Just remember, if the product you order from Amazon is damaged when you receive it, return it. They'll give your money back and pay for return shipping.

Scarab Sages

There have been a couple of times that I've received damaged items from Amazon, and after reporting the items, they've always sent me a replacement via next-day air, no questions asked. They provide pre-paid shipping labels to return the old items, too.

You can't expect customer server much better than that, really. I don't know why somebody would just keep a damaged item and then complain about it.

I concur. Amazon has top notch service.

I bought my goddaughter a cell phone for christmas last year, and it was broken (not a shipping problem - the MicroSD slot didn't work), and they sent out a new one right away and we shipped the new one back for free.

I once had a complaint about a book not being sent to me right away (I was pre-ordering and a friend who didn't pre-order got his first) and they apologised and got me a small coupon to make amends.

And lately, they have been apologising to me twice about stuff they didn't get enough of and couldn't ship to everyone who pre-ordered. In one case, it turned out they were wrong. In either case, I actually got the stuff on time. And each time, I got a 5€ coupon code for my troubles (my troubles being having to open an email)

So they can play the poor abused victim?

Right, I agree.

Which is why I don't get the people complaining about Amazon, when all they lose is time, and have saved money by making that sacrifice...

Silver Crusade

I ran in to this problem with amazon also. I received my book with smashed corners. I did not realize how bad the damage was until now. But I all ready through out the label. Live and learn. I was going to order a new corebook just for display any way.

Although I will grudgingly say that the bindings on the pathfinder books are not that great. its just a fact.

Wow FFG has really dropped like a stone in those ratings. I hope they can turn that around with some good products in the near future.
