Just bought a Fender Starcaster electric guitar and am teaching myself to play. Obviously not very good now, hope to be in time.

Find a reputable music store/school that gives lessons in your area and sign up. Bad habits learned by yourself will be harder to break the longer you go without formal lessons.
And have patience. Learn the basics - don't try and jump into the hard stuff too soon. When you have a good foundation, everything else will be that much easier later on. The basics can be boring at times, but they will pay off in the end.
Edit: One more thing, take the time to learn the language of music - musical notation. If all you ever learn is "tab" it will be that much harder to branch out to other instruments later on, if you want to.

+1 Even if it seems dry and you just want to jump in and start shredding, take the time to learn basic music theory. The time and effort you devote to developing a thorough understanding of intervals, chords, etc. will pay you back a zillionfold.
