It's also funny how easily bad planning can feel like a conspiracy:
Bay Area summer weather is extremely predictable...In 2012 I went to San Francisco for an AI conference. While I was there, I wandered into Chinatown looking for the evil sorcerer Lo Pan from the movie "Big Trouble in Little China".
I walked right into real buildings like I belonged there. I even went down into dark basements, searching for any sign of him. No one stopped me. I guess my high charisma made me look like I had every right to be poking around.
I never found Lo Pan. But I did discover old entrances that led into shadowy tunnels under the streets. Those tunnels looked too creepy and unknown for me to explore that day. Maybe someday I’ll go back and finally face whatever’s waiting down there.
That really DOES sound like San Francisco. It's all kinds of fun!
EDIT: We used to love the "Sobo bathroom run" in downtown Oakland. You had to walk in the service door, past the kitchen, take a left, and wander a maze of dimly-lit mysterious concrete corridors into the depths. At every junction was a simple sign. "Bathrooms -->. Restaurant <--." It was around 75-100 meters of wandering before you found the mythical bathroom.
Aaaaand, of course...
PG&E ran 2 hours long so we didn't get power back until 8:00 pm...
...and they broke my fiber optic line so I'm on borrowed internet until Saturday.
(Our neighbors are really really good about it and I just happen to have a 100' ethernet cable lying around 'cause AT&T, but it's still frustrating to always be the ONE GUY where they break something of mine.)
Tell them that they owe you restitution because you need the internet to work remotely.Aaaaand, of course...

They're massively shielded from exactly such lawsuits. Because of course they are.
I was told some information about this this morning. (I don't know why I was told, as I didn't ask, but hey whatever) On Monday, 2 hosts were scheduled. One had quit last week, but hadn't been taken off the schedule. The other didn't show, obviously, so the housekeeping supervisor called her a few times. When she finally reached her, the host apparently got real salty and was fired. Then they just didn't bother finding someone to come in on Tuesday morning.You may be right, because they didn't show up today eitherMaybe they were eaten during the last breakfast?You know what's fun? When there are 2 people scheduled to come in at 6 to get the breakfast ready by 6:30, it's 6:37 and neither is here yet. At least I finally got ahold of the manager and he is supposed to be on his way to do it.The breakfast hosts still weren't there by the time I left.
Firing all your breakfast hosts and then not bothering to find replacements. That's some impressive customer-centric management right there...
I'm frequently mildly amused by conspiracy theories surrounding obvious coincidences.
Global Megacorporation does not give raises. My base salary hasn't changed in 4 years. Instead, they hand you stock, since you can expect that to have similar value (I get a bonus of about 20% of my base pay in stock every year, and it tends to go up quite a bit by the time it vests, so it is technically of greater value than a raise as long as the company doesn't tank).
So pretty much every Global Megacorporation employee has some form of vesting stock: Lower-paid employees get options. I get restricted stock units. My next stock vesting date is on the 15th. Laid-off employees comparing notes realized that most of them had large amounts of stock ready to vest, so they must be laying people off based on the amount of unvested stock they own. Um... ALL of us have tons of unvested stock. It's not a conspiracy. It's coincidence.
But it'll be funny if I get laid off on the 15th. I can write, "But I had stock that was just vesting this very day!"
OK. I think that's a record.
