The Travels of Traine (Serpent Skull Campaign)

Campaign Journals

February 7th, Traine description and background.

Description

Traine is a young human male. He is very muscular, and at 6 feet tall stands over most of the folks he meets. He is wearing a chain shirt, barely visible under his explorer's outfit that is colored in browns and greens. He has a well made falchion on his hip, and a longbow strung over his shoulder. That along with his pack and pouches, makes him look like a man who is ready for anything. However, his open friendly smile belays the somberness of his clothing.

Biography

The Journal of Traine, started whilst on board the ship Jenivere, sailing to Eleder, at the suggestion of my last master.

Greetings to any reading this journal. I am Traine, a Ranger in the service of Gozreh. Originally I am from Longpoint, a village along the western coast line of the Aspo Bay in Andorian, and was known as Traine dan Torcan (Traine son of Torc). If you find this journal, it means that I am dead. Please try and return it to my father.

My story begins in my 16th year, and as normal for our village I began training in the ways of hunting the accursed Saughin that raided our small village during the summer season. I have been blessed by Gozreh and became quite good at tracking, finding, approaching stealthy, and finally killing these beasts that hunted our village. By my 18th birthday, I was in charge of a patrol that scoured the shoreline for them, and my father asked me to take my younger brother Carl, who had just turned 16, with me and teach him our ways. This I refused for two reasons, brothers should not train brothers, it just doesn't work, and more importantly, Carl was not suited for the woods. He had learned to sing and play the flute. He even had learned a magic trick or two, so he should have spent his time performing in the taverns or gone on to the big city and worked there and I told da as much. Well, da was not to be denied, and Carl was sent out with another patrol, and only the leader and 1 other man returned. Eight of our young men died, including Carl. Myself and two other patrols were dispatched and we caught up with the Saughin group and destroyed them, but never recovered all the bodies including Carl's. My da never forgave me and turned me out so I left to explore the world.

Since then, I have traveled to many lands, including the great city of Absalom, which led me to understand that I don't like cities, Osirion, where I learned to use the falchion quite well, to the Mwangi Expanse, where I have finished my apprenticeship for being a guide, and am now on my way to Eleder in Sargava, where I understand that a group of Pathfinders wish to explore the Expanse and perhaps I can hire out as a guide.

Rova 30
Boarded the ship Jenivere in the port of Bloodcove, Mwangi Expanse along with a man called Ishirou. Met Captain Alizandru Kovack who says it will take 7 days to reach Eleder. Also met 1st mate Alton Devers, and the crew. It seems that the ship also has some passengers, a human roguish chap named Jaqen, a human who I can't make out what he does named Jasper, a gnome cleric of Gozreh named Jig-wren-doh, a half-orc barbarian named Crusher, as well as Gelik Aberwhinge, Ieana, Jask Derindi, Sasha Nevah and Aerys Mavato. I hope to learn more about them during the voyage. Perhaps they are also going to be part of the expedition to the Expanse interior.

Lamashan 8
Shipwrecked!!!!

I awake on a beach with a big lobster biting my foot and feeling sick to my stomach. I see my falchion in a pile of gear about ten feet away, so I stand, run and grab it. There are three of these lobsters and they decide that I am too awake for them and move to my companions and attack! A short brutal battle later, Crusher and I have killed two and Jasper uses magic to kill the other (so that is what he does!). They look like they will make good dinner.

We wake up Master Jig-wren-doh and Jaqen. Also Gelik, Sasha, Aerys, Jask and Ishorou are with us and we wake them. We decide that we have crashed on the Serpent's Shiv Island. Master Jig-wren-doh inspects us all, and has determined that we all ate taggat poison at dinner last night and the sickness should wear off in a bit. Inspecting the shore, Jasper of all people finds rowboat tracks. It seems that someone took us off the ship and deposited us here along with all our gear. Looking around we see a wrecked ship about a half hour walk down the beach, and as it is still low tide we decide to head out now while we can still walk to the ship.

It is a good thing that we came now. The Jenivere will probably be dragged out to sea when high tide comes in as only part of it remains. As we investigate the ship, Crusher and I kill another one of those lobsters, this one bigger than the three on the beach. We find the body of 1st Mate Alton Devers, and Master Jig-wren-doh determines that he has some rapier wounds that are a few days old, but he died from bites similar to what the lobster claws would do. Someone remembers that the Captain had a rapier. This is getting scary.

We also find the cooks body and he was poisoned also, however he has snake bites on his neck that are actually what killed him. Now, no one had a snake on board that we know of, unless it was Ieana. In the Captains room and the storehouse area we find a lot of equipment that we can use to setup a camp, as well as 12 potions. Jasper with Master Jig-wren-doh's help identify 9 of them and since they are mostly healing, Crusher and I take the lions share. We also find the Captains Log and our worst fears are realized.

An examination of the Captains Log reveals that the Jenivere’s captain seemed to be suffering from some sort of madness that grew over the course of the ship’s final voyage. Earlier entries from previous voyages are precise in recording progress and events along the way, as are entries from the first two-thirds of this last trip. Yet as one reads further, the more recent the entries get, the less common they become—in some cases, several days are missing entries. What entries do appear are strangely short, focusing more and more on one of the passengers—the Varisian scholar Ieana, with whom the captain seems to have become obsessed. Several entries are nothing more than poorly written love poems to Ieana, while others bemoan Captain Kovack’s inability to please her or catch her attention. Near the end, the entries begin to take on a more ominous tone with the captain starting to complain that other members of the crew are eyeing “his Ieana.” In particular, he suspects his first mate is in love with her, and writes several times about how he wishes Alton would just “have an accident.” The final entry is perhaps the most disturbing, for in it the captain writes of how he’s changed course for Smuggler’s Shiv at Ieana’s request. He hopes that the two of them can make a home on the remote island, but also notes that the crew are growing increasingly agitated at the ship’s new course. The captain muses that “something may need to be done about the crew” if their suspicions get any worse.

Part of what we find is a fine bottle of brandy. I will keep that hidden from Aerys since she seems to be drunk most of the time. Perhaps we can help her.

Ah, a chest with Father Jask's gear, and also the keys to his manacles. No one should be locked up like this. We take all the gear and head back to camp. While talking with our fellow castaways, we all agree to help setup camp, except Gelik. While all should be free to follow their own way, this gnome's attitude is beginning to grate on me. If he doesn't shape up and help out, he might not get any of our food. Aerys, Sasha and Ishirou volunteer to help setup camp and have camp duties. Sasha says she can guard the camp or hunt for food, Ishirou can guard or set traps and fortify the camp, Aerys volunteers to help with moral or guard. Both Jasper and Jaqen make very snide remarks about that. I will have to keep an eye on them. They do not seem to have any respect for the women in our band. We ask Sasha and Ishirou to guard the camp, and Aerys will be able to read poetry and and help keep our spirits up. It takes almost six hours to setup camp, including the tent that I have which I let Aerys and Sasha use.

During the afternoon hours, we all relax under the shelter as best we can since it is too hot to do anything. Sasha comes down with a slight fever, but it passes. Before the rains come, I asked if anyone else had tracking training, and Sasha says she does. We go up and down the beach to see if we can find any other tracks, especially those of perhaps the Captain and Ieana.

Other PCs, you don't know this:
While we are looking for tracks, the back of her shirt slips a bit and I see a mark on her back, that is of the Red Mantis Assassin Society. I will not tell the others of this. One is as one does, and Sasha has been good to us, so there is no need to complicate things

The rains came. Typical for the tropics, a shower every afternoon. We make supper from the lobster from the ship. Between what we each have and the three smaller lobsters, we have about 74 days worth of rations. Divided by ten of us that is only a weeks worth. Sasha and I will have to do hunting to keep us in food. Guard duty is shared through the night. 1st watch Jaqen and Aerys, 2nd Crusher and Ishirou, 3rd Traine and Sasha. During my sleep time, I had a vivid nightmare:

I am back on board the Jenivere, bent over the railing being seasick. After my latest bout of retching, I slump back and see the rest of the passengers and crew are on deck as well, all of them sick save for the captain and the quiet Varisian scholar Ieana. She whispers in the captain’s ear, then gives him a kiss on the cheek. At that point the captain holds up a wooden soup spoon, and I realize that you’re holding one as well. Everyone has a spoon. The ship is sinking, and the only way to stop it is to bail out the hold with my spoon! I worked feverishly, but the waters keep rushing in. Just before I woke, I can see monstrous things with pincers in the water trying to claw their way into the ship...

Finally morning comes.

Lamashan 9 (Day 2)
Ishirou agrees to guard the camp, Sasha and Jask are going to hunt for food, Aerys is our entertainer, and Gelik has agreed to be our medic. They all seem to be at least friendly this morning.

10 minutes after Sasha and Jask leave, we hear screams. Running south of the camp we find Sasha down on the ground laughing. She got bit by a flying lizard and wants one as a pet. We agree to get one for her.

We start heading south to look for these lizards. Don't find anything, so we wait out the heat of the day and then head back to camp. Sasha and Jask bring in food and we have crab again for dinner. I will be getting sick of it after too long.

Sasha and I spent an uneventful night on watch. The waves looked interesting with the algae illuminating them.

Lamashan 10 (Day 3)
We explore another area west of the camp along the shore and find nothing. Back to camp after the heat of the day. Sasha brings in crabs and we have to dip into our rations. The water looks the same as last night.

Lamashan 11 (Day 4)
Waking up, Jig-wren-doh and Jasper identify the last three potions, remove disease, water walk and water breathing.

Aerys is crying, and wants to stop drinking. The berries from viper nettles will help with the withdrawal.

We explore another area west of the camp and find nothing. Back to camp after the heat of the day. Both Sasha and Jask bring in a boar so we have more for tomorrow. Aerys came down very sick. Master Jig-wren-doh says she has caught some disease and will be able to help her later. The water looks the same as last night.

Lamashan 12 (Day 5)
We explore another area east of the camp along the shore and find nothing. Back to camp after the heat of the day. Sasha and Jask find more of the crabs and some fish. We are adding to our meager supply of rations. Master Jig-wren-doh helps Aerys and she seems to be getting better. The water looks the same as last night, but there is something thrashing in the water, however when I got to the water it disappeared. Walking back, I felt that someone was watching me!

We wake up in the morning, and Aerys is sick again. I have to find those berries for her.

Lamashan 13 (Day 6)
Explore area east of the camp and don't find anything. Back to camp. We have decided to move the camp along the shore towards the west tomorrow. We will explore while the others move the camp. Aerys feels much better. She is no longer sick, but she is still detoxifying from the alcohol.

Lamashan 14 (Day 7)
We must be getting used to this place. We are able to cover more ground during our exploration. We still don't find anything. Our friends move the camp so we can explore further west on the peninsula. No one got sick today!

During Jaqen's watch a goat is dropped into the camp. Well, thank the god's for more food.

Lamashan 15 (Day 8)
We still don't find anything. Damn, Jask and Sasha got sick. Master Jig-wren-doh will have to help them tonight.

Lamashan 16 (Day 9)
We explore more of this accursed island, but still do not find anything. Master Jig-wren-doh helps Sasha and Jask. Jask is cured of his sickness. We feed Sasha the potion of remove disease since she got much worse. Nothing happens that night on watch.

Lamashan 17 (Day 10)
Sasha and I have gotten breaking, moving and setting up camp so easy that she, Gelik, Aerys, Jask and Ishorou can move it while the rest of us explore this gods-forsaken place. Near the end of the day, we find a ship named “The Tattooed Lady”. Jac thinks it was a merchant ship that got lost 30 years ago. It has a huge hole in the bow, and other holes in other parts of the ship. We enter a hole near the rear of the ship and start searching for treasure. We search the bottom and find 112gp on the captain, and a couple of skeletons that are not moving. We get up on deck and poke another skeleton, but this one stands and attacks me! Six dead skeletons later we search the deck and find nothing. Jac climbs the main mast to the crows nest and finds a bow and quiver that is still good. Jasper tells me that they are both magical, so I claim them.

Lamashan 18 (Day 11)
I got sick last night but with Master Jig-wren-doh help, I felt better this morning. Another day spent combing this island, and did not find anything.... Dang wasted day.

Lamashan 19 (Day 12)
We spend the day searching the end of the island and finally find the flying lizard that Sasha wants. Jasper does his magic on it, and I figured it is a dimorphodon and we bring it back to camp and give it to her. She is well pleased and tells us of her past association with the Red Mantis Society. Others in the group are surprised, but I told her that I knew as I had seen her tattoo. She offers to teach us combat tricks on the morrow. Crusher and Gelik get sick.

Lamashan 19 (Day 13)
Sasha trains us the next day, and we all are a bit quicker with our weapons.

Lamashan 20 (Day 14)
Crusher feels much better today, but Gelik is down. We only search about ¾ of what we did other days. I still have not found the viper nettle berries. Jask is worried, about when we get rescued that he will be put back into chains. He is looking for the Brine Demon, and it may have evidence that he is innocent. We will search for the ship.

Lamashan 21 (Day 15)
Gelik is still down, so we move camp instead of exploring. Sasha and Jask are out hunting, and meet us at the end of the day, with their usual good fortune. Hopefully Gelik will be somewhat better in the morning.

Lamashan 22 (Day 16)
Even though Master Jig-wren-doh and Jask try to help Gelik, he is still sick and unconscious. We have not decided on our course of action yet today.

Session date: 2011/04/04

Lamashan 22 (Day 16)
Even though Master Jig-wren-doh and Jask try to help Gelik, he is still sick and unconscious. We have not decided on our course of action yet today. Gelik woke up. He had a dream that he was stranded on an island with morons. Then he said, “Damn, it wasn't a dream.” We explore more of the island today, and run into dimorphodon again. Crusher and I knock them unconscious and put them back into their nest. We find nothing else on this island. Night comes, and when Sasha and I are on watch, something drops in dead dimorphodons into the camp. Neither of us see what dropped the corpses.

Lamashan 23 (Day 17)
Morning comes, thankfully no one gets sick. Nothing today. Back to camp for the night. Gelik tries to give Master Jig-wren-doh some food that is bad. Hmm... Dueling gnomes at 10 feet. Nothing happens that night and no one gets sick. Hopefully we are getting used to this island somewhat.

Lamashan 24 (Day 18)
Out exploring today. Two more dimorphodon attack us. This time we have to kill them. I am not telling Sasha, as she seems to be too attached to these things. Back to camp. Nothing happens over night.

Lamashan 25 (Day 19)
Morning comes, and we go out exploring again, and find nothing. Still no nettle viper berries. Back to camp and no one gets sick tonight.

Lamashan 26 (Day 20)
Out exploring, we see a ship named “Tears of Grog” out by the little island, so we go to explore. We found nothing, so back to shore we go to continue exploring. We see more dimorphodon and Jig-wren-doh talks to them, while I calm them down. We move around them and continue. Back to camp, and the night passes peacefully.

Lamashan 27 (Day 21)
No one got sick last night, so out exploring we go again. Both of the islands, and along the shore again. Nothing on the larger island, but we see another wrecked ship off the smaller island, named the “Golden Bow”, and Jaq thinks it was an elven merchant ship. We go to explore it, and decide to come back tomorrow and dig thru the silt. Back to shore and camp for the night. Jask felt a little sick, but it passes. Two dimorphodon come into camp and talk with Jig-wren-doh. We give them some food and they leave.

While reading Gelik papers, he was looking for a ship called “The Nightvoice” and he wanted to find it and bring something back to the Pathfinder Society to get in good with them.

OOC:
During the day, Jig-wren-doh told the dimorphodon about Gelik and to eat him. Well, they did just that. He never told us this.

Lamashan 28 (Day 22)
We go back to the ship, and spend the day there instead of exploring. We find nothing. Oh well, a day on the beach. Back to camp. Crusher feels a little sick but shakes it off.

Lamashan 29 (Day 23)
Out exploring today, and find nothing. Back to camp. Both Sasha and I feel a bit sick but it passes.

Lamashan 30 (Day 24)
Out exploring today, and find nothing. Back to camp. Both Sasha and I feel a bit sick but it passes. No one gets sick.

Neth 1 (Day 25)
We stay inland again today. Sasha has been leaving food out for the dimorphodons every night, and it is gone by the morning. However this morning, it is still there. Hopefully they are ok. We will leave food out for them for a few more days. We find two blood drained dimorphodons and a skull that we think is Gelik.

Neth 2 (Day 26)
Out exploring. Start at the beach and then moved inland and towards the cove. Near the end of the day, Jasper hears some hissing. We investigate, and find a cobra snake. The dang snake is not happy. Jasper sleeps it and Crusher moves up and waits a moment before taking it's head off with his greataxe. Back to camp, and spend another night on this gods-forsaken place.

Neth 3 (Day 27)
Explore again. We get to the cove, and go thru half of it. No ships. Oh well, at least no one got sick today.

Session date: 2011/05/09

Neth 4 (Day 28)
Found a make shift campsite, and a hat and scarves that look the Captain and Ieana made it to shore. There are tracks off into the jungle. No one got sick. Maybe we are developing resistance to it.

Neth 5 (Day 29)
Explore again, and found nothing. No one got sick again. Yea!

Neth 6 (Day 30)
Explore again, and found nothing. Jaq felt a little ill, but it passed.

Neth 7 (Day 31)
Explore again. Found a ship off the island, named the Bloody Doll. It belonged to a minor pirate hunter about 40 years ago. It was so broken up, that there was nothing left of it. No one got sick again.

Neth 8 (Day 32)
Nothing found today. No one got sick. In the middle of the night Jaq got attacked by a crab, but it is now dinner for the next couple of nights.

Neth 9 (Day 33)
Explored again, and found a patch of viper nettle berries. I hacked my way into the center of the area and got the berries, but I got pricked by the thorns and feel sick. No one else got sick that night. I feed the berries to Aerys.

Neth 10 (Day 34)
Aerys feels better in the morning after eating the berries and doesn't need alcohol any more. She tells us that she is going to finish her epic story and lets us read it. We continue to explore, this time going back to the island outer edge and following the shore line for a bit. About mid day, I feel a lot better. During the day a snake attacks me. Jaq and I killed it before it had the chance to hurt any of us. No one got sick that night. We read Aerys book for 2 hours, and no one gets sick.

Neth 11 (Day 35)
Explore again, and find nothing. We read Aerys book for 2 hours, and no one gets sick.

Neth 12 (Day 36)
Explore again, and find nothing. We read Aerys book for 2 hours, and no one gets sick. We get attacked by a crab again that night on Crusher and Jaq's watch. Another couple of days of crab meat.

Neth 13 (Day 37)
Explore again, and find nothing. We read Aerys book for 2 hours, and no one gets sick. After reading the book we all feel

Neth 14 (Day 38)
We explore around the cove and see a wrecked ship named Brine Demon, that Jask was looking for. The ship wrecked about 8 years ago. Jaq really knows his ships. We search the ship and find a coffer box that is locked. Jaq does his open thing and we find a magical dagger and papers that clear Jask of the charges against him. We give Jask the papers when we get back to camp. No one gets sick tonight. The captain from the Brine Demon appears from the fire and calls us mutineers and tells us to produce Aeshamara. Jaq throws a locket at his feat (where did he get that?) and the ghost touches it and dissipates. No one gets sick tonight.

Neth 15 (Day 39)
Jask teaches us mantras and chants today. We all are able to concentrate better. Jasper and Master Jig-wren-doh seem especially pleased.

Session date: 2011/05/23

Neth 16 (Day 40)
Explore again, along the sea shore, starting with the small wreck, the Scalywag, off the small island just off shore. It is filled with undead. Crusher is paralyzed but we finally put them down. Jaq decides to stay at camp, so Ishirou comes with us from now on. Crusher and Jaq come down with something.

Neth 17 (Day 41)
We saw another ship and go out to explore it. The ships name is Windwar. We think it was a Sargavan warship at one time. One of the catapults falls thru the deck and Jasper falls down. We found some rotted rope and pull him back up. On the way back, I stop at camp and get my rope. We continue to explore. Find another ship midday called the Bearded Harpy. We set out to explore it. Find another undead ghoul and Crusher and I kill it. Dang things. Ishirou shows us a treasure map, and it is near where we are. It was from Lortch Quellig who was executed and Ishirou got the map. We will look over the next few days. No one got sick.

Neth 18 (Day 42)
We go exploring again, and find the place where Ishirou thinks the treasure is. We make camp and wait for the morning since we have to look where the sun comes up. No one gets sick tonight.

Neth 19 (Day 43)
Ishirou shows us where to dig after the sun rises. We dig for an hour. Man this is labor. We find a dwarf skeleton and a magic great ax. We continue to dig around the wood platform for another two hours. We find a shaft down with water at the bottom. I drink the water breathing potion and go for a swim. Two more of those undead try to attack me but I get away. They follow and we kill them. I go back and find a chest. Ishirou can't open it, so we haul it back up where Master Jig-wren-doh asks Gozreh to guide Ishirou's hand and he is now able to open the chest. We find lots of money, a magic darkwood buckler and a scroll for Master Jig-wren-doh, since Jasper can't read it. We spend the rest of the day here, and give Ishirou the buckler. He teaches me some tricks with the sword. No one gets sick tonight.

Session date: 2011/06/20

Neth 20 (Day 44)
Spend the day exploring more. I hate this island. We are never going to get off. We ran into a poisonous snake, but Jasper slept it so we left it in the middle of the trail. No one got sick that night.

Neth 21 (Day 45)
Spent the day exploring again. Found nothing. No one got sick.

Neth 22 (Day 46)
Spent the day exploring again. Found nothing. No one got sick.

Neth 23 (Day 47)

Neth 24 (Day 48)
Found a crab spider web and went around it. Even Jasper was quiet, and the creature never heard us.

Neth 25 (Day 49)
Found a plant called a yellow musk creeper, along with two zombies. I killed one zombie with arrows, one zombie came out and Crusher crushed it. Jasper went into the wilted area, and the plant tried something so he left. Master Jig-wren-doh summoned a dog who bit the plant and I finished it off with arrows. The two zombies looked like they had been on a ship. Near the end of the day we find an old camp site with a couple of shelters that are in disrepair. We investigate and find another one of those plant zombies. Crusher kills it, and we don't find anything else in the camp. No one has been sick for quite some time now. We must be getting used to this accursed island.

Neth 26 (Day 50)
Another day, more exploring. Crusher and I trip a trap and Ishirou is pulled up, and smacked into a tree. Crusher holds him while I cut the rope. We continue on and find nothing else during the day.

Neth 27 (Day 51)
Damn, another trap, this time I step in it. We find another camp on the shore. It has a hut that has a tarp as a door. Crusher and I open the tarp and there is a pentagram carved into the wall and human teeth driven into the wall. Master Jig-wren-doh makes a flower out of the symbol during the night.

Neth 28 (Day 52)
Spent the day exploring again. Found nothing.

Neth 29 (Day 53)
Crusher sets off another trap, and gets hit by both spikes in the tree and is hurt bad.

Kuthona 2 (Day 56)
I set off a trap, but Crusher caught me before I hit the tree.

Kuthona 3 (Day 57)
We get to the beach for part of the day, and see a large crab. I hit it with two arrows, and it moves to the waters edge and stopped. Crusher charged it and finished it off with the most powerful blow that I have ever seen. We ate well that night.

Kuthona 4 (Day 58)
Spent the day exploring again. Found nothing.

Kuthona 5 (Day 59)
Crossing the river, we run into shocker lizards. Master Jig-wren-doh tries to talk to them but they attack anyway. It is a good thing, as Jasper tells us they do electric damage. Nothing else happened.

Kuthona 6 (Day 60)
Spent the day exploring again. Found nothing.

Kuthona 7 (Day 61)
Spent the day exploring again. Found nothing.

Kuthona 8 (Day 62)
Found one of the traps today. Both Crusher and I found it before setting it off. I cut the trip line after making sure that no one was stepping in the rope loop.

Kuthona 9 (Day 63)
Found another trap and cut it. Felt good doing it. As we get to the beach we find two empty nests and lots of broken Red Mantis saw toothed sabers and daggers. I find a dagger that is quite well made with the Red Mantis symbol on it. We settle down for the night.

Session date: 2011/07/12

Update to last session – Kuthona 9:

We found a journal at the camp we could read parts of it. It was a journal from ship the Thrune's Fang that shipwrecked here 70 years ago. The journal entries that were able to read are:

...many survived, the Thrune’s Fang will never sail again. Sargava’s assimilation must proceed without...

...fine hunting on the Shiv, but the bugs are a constant distraction. Nylithati’s skills at healing help fight the sickness, but I fear she has...

...founded. Nylithati has seized control of my crew. They are hers now. And so I have abandoned...

..fine home. Fresh water nearby and I need not endure Nylithati’s ceaseless raving about...

...will not be returning to that gray, silent island again. There is nothing there but horror...

...crew lurking about the area. They seem strange, almost feral. It has been almost a decade since the wreck. I wonder what strange beliefs Nylithati has...

...changed. There was no sign of Nylithati in the camp, but the focus of their ceremony was a cauldron they must have salvaged from the Thrune’s Fang at the base of the ruined lighthouse. It was into this they threw the half-eaten body of the still screaming man...

...all around. I can hear them chanting in the green even now. They call Nylithati “Mother Thrunefang” now, and promise me immortality if I lay down my arms and submit. I know what their immortality consists of, and I’ll have no part of that corrupt life after...

Kuthona 10 (Day 64)
We decide to travel along the coast and run into a huge crab on the beach that is not natural. We decide that it is being controlled by something so Crusher and Jasper try and talk it out of the crab shell. A bird man, named Pezock, came out, and he has a saw tooth saber and we talked to him. He was shipwrecked also, named the Crows Tooth a Red Mantis ship, and his whole crew is gone, probably eaten. Ieana and the Captain passed thru here on the way to the cannibals. We take him in with us as he wants to get revenge on the cannibals. We find nothing else the rest of the day. Master Jig-wren-doh draws the symbol we found at the camp where we found the broken saw tooth saber, and it is the symbol that the cannibals use.

Kuthona 11 (Day 65)
We head towards the tip of the island, but find the Crows Tooth ship and board it. We had to kill six more of those undead creatures. Near the end of the day we come to the end of the island. The tide went out and we crossed over to the first island.

Kuthona 12 (Day 66)
Explore the first island and find nothing. The second island looks dead, so we decide to wait till the next day to cross the two hundred feet over to it.

Kuthona 13 (Day 67)
As we cross over, we see that the trees are actually stalks of fungus. We decide to go slowly and take our time. We kill two vegepygmys and continue on. We find a fungus net that leads us to a rocky spire 90 feet off shore and cross. We enter a cave mouth and travel thru some fungus curtains. We enter a 30 foot room and a there is a zombie there. All of sudden a plant creature bursts from the skeleton and we attack it. It reaches tentacles which hits Crusher and myself, but we fight off the infection and kill it. We find no treasure and search the room. When we leave the room, the fungus trees on the island are dieing and our fungus net is down. We use our water walking potion on Crusher who carries everyone to shore on the other side. We finish searching the island and find four vegepygmy bodies and a ship, called the Nightvoice, the one that Gelik was looking for. We search the ship and find the remains of some vegepygmys again and a nice small spear for Master Jig-wren-doh. We find some gold and magic items mostly that are useful for Jasper. We find a journal that Master Jig-wren-doh is able to read. We will provide the information to the Pathfinder Society when we get off the island.

Nightvoice Journal:

This derelict is the wreck of the Nightvoice, a large Pathfinder Society exploration vessel that originally hailed from Almas. The Nightvoice has been wrecked here for decades after it mysteriously vanished on an attempted voyage around the southern coast of Garund. In fact, the explorers were well on their way home to Almas to report their findings to their lodge when a strange leathery pod they’d discovered in a seaside cavern burst open, infecting nearly the entire crew with russet mold spores—only Captain Havner Ames managed to resist the infection. As he watched his friends and crew succumb to the infection, he knew that he couldn’t allow the strange bulb (which had closed up on itself and was pulsing with a foul life, as if replenishing its store of spores) to reach the coast. Yet the Nightvoice was now adrift on a current that would swiftly take it to the coast of Sargava. It was all Captain Ames could do to alter the large ship’s course on his own so that it instead crashed against the rocks here. Delirious and mad, Captain Ames abandoned the wrecked ship and climbed over the island, hoping to find a place to hide the fungal bulb away where it could do no more damage.

OOC talk:
It has been a long summer, with vacations, on call causing a missed session, and my daughter's wedding last week. All that is behind us now, so regular bi-weekly updates (the other campaign is A Druid in the Kingdom that I run) should start occurring with only holiday exceptions from now till next July

Kuthona 14 (Day 68)
We head back to the main island today, find the others and setup camp away from all those dead plants and spend a night quietly.

Kuthona 14 (Day 69)
Spent the day exploring again. Found nothing.

Kuthona 15 (Day 70)
Spent the day exploring again. Found nothing.

Kuthona 16 (Day 71)
Spent the day exploring again. Found nothing.

Kuthona 17 (Day 72)
Spent the day exploring again. Found nothing.

Kuthona 18 (Day 73)
Spent the day exploring again. Found nothing.

Kuthona 19 (Day 74)
Hit one of those traps again. Ouch...

Kuthona 20 (Day 75)
Hit another one trap but this time it pulled me up a cliff instead of a tree. I was able to cut the vine using my falchion and fell 20 feet. Ouch again. Master Jig-wren-doh has been busy healing me. Master Jig-wren-doh saw something on the cliff and casts an entangle spell, but hears laughter, but we can't climb it, so we decide to continue on and find a place where we can go up. It must be those cannibals, maybe. Jaq got taken that night while out gathering firewood. I found tracks but lost them after a mile.

Kuthona 21 (Day 76)
Tried to pick up the trail again, but couldn't find it, so we continued exploring, this time heading towards the coast. I catch sight of two of those shocker lizards thru the jungle. Jasper casts a spell, while the rest of us wait a moment. We kill the two lizards and continue on, finding nothing else.

Kuthona 21 (Day 77)
We come to the coast and there are six ropes down to an isolated beach. I climb down but find nothing. Back up the rope and continue on.

Kuthona 22 (Day 78)
We head to the end of the peninsula and on a small island off shore we see a ship and go explore. It is called the Bloodwalker. Ishirou thinks that one time is was a Cheliax pirate hunter. There is nothing of interest on the ship.

Kuthona 21 (Day 79)
We follow the trail inland but find nothing. At least none of those dang vine traps.

Kuthona 22 (Day 80)
We continue down the trail and river. Ouch. Damn vine traps. Jig-wren-doh has to heal both Crusher and I again. I am really beginning to dislike those cannibals.

Kuthona 23 (Day 81)
We continue down the trail and river. When the trail forks we continue to follow the river side. Dang traps again.

Kuthona 24 (Day 82)
We continue down the trail and river. When the trail forks we continue to follow the river side. Again dang traps.

Kuthona 25 (Day 83)
Down the trail on the east side of the inlet. A big lizard jumps out of the bush and bites Crusher. We quickly kill the lizard, but it's handler starts yelling and pointing at us. Jasper puts him to sleep and four more jump out of the bushes at us. These must be cannibals since they have pointed teeth. Master Jig-wren-doh uses an entangle spell to slow them down, and we battle on. After killing these, five more savages come from down the road and do not enter the entangle field and throw javelins at us. Crusher retreats from killing the sleeping savage, and we exchange arrows and javelins. Crusher goes down, but Master Jig-wren-doh heals him. With Crusher playing possum the savages turn their javelins towards me and I am down and dieing. I find out later that Master Jig-wren-doh called forth a misty spell that obscured the vision of all that entered and Crusher picked me up and we all retreated.

I have learned a valuable lesson today. Retreat is a valid option when you are out manned.

Kuthona 25 (Day 83) (continued)
We moved the campsite a couple of miles and rest for the night. Jig-wren-doh hears his name called several times during the night by a lovely voice, but can't discover the source.

Kuthona 26 (Day 84)
Master Jig-wren-doh heals us up. He and I go to investigate but are heard, so we return to camp. We spend the rest of the day resting.

Kuthona 27 (Day 85)
We head to the cannibal camp, and make a large circle around the camp to see what it looks like. We see some skeletons but leave them be. We enter a hut and there is a woman dressed like a witch doctor. Ishirou stabs her and I miss. Her monkey tries to bite Ishirou and she tries to touch him with a wand but misses. Crusher comes running in and puts her down. Jasper takes the wand. We leave the building and some cannibals coming running towards us. Jasper sleeps some, and we kill them all. We go into another building, Jasper sleeps more, and we kill them also. Going out the back of the building two guards are in a tower, Crusher and I take them out. All that is left is the lighthouse. We kill two guards on the ground floor and move up the stairs. A red-headed cannibal and four women attack us, Crusher and I almost die, but we finally take them all down. His scimitar is exceptionally well made and Jasper tells us it is magical.

We ransack the camp. Find a a journal from the Thrunesfang, eight magical potions and some other alchemical items.

Kuthona 28 (Day 86)
This entry is written in a different handwriting

I am Aerys, a poet and guard for the camp while the others were out exploring the island. I will respect Traine's wishes and attempt to forward this journal to his father.

They returned after clearing out the lighthouse area and were sorely wounded. Jask spent all of his healing energies last night to heal them back up so we could move to the fort and begin work on restoring the lighthouse so we can get off this miserable island.

While myself, Jask, Pezock and Sasha were making the place more livable and inspecting the lighthouse, the rest took off down the hole in the ground to clear it out so there were no surprises. After a while, they came back and asked if we could all come down as there were some carvings and writing on what looked like a temple wall and in another cave, as well as a note left by the Captain of the Jenivere. I was able to translate since it was in Aklo, an almost dead language.

Captain note, translations of wall writings:

In the Inner Sanctum:
To Command the Very Tides to Rise Up and Eschew What Lies Below:

Empower the Four Sentinel Runes with the Blood of a Thinking Creature Tempered by the Kiss of a Serpent’s Tongue.

Anoint the Tide Stone with Waters Brought from the Sea in a Vessel of Purest Metal.

Invoke the Lord’s Sacred Name to Wrap His Coils around the Sea Itself that He Might Lay Bare What Lies Below and Cast Down Your Enemies on the Waves above.

In the cave with the other drawings:
“All glory to Great Ydersius.”

Captain's note:
I am Captain Alizandru Kovack, betrayer of my crew and destroyer of the good ship Jenivere. Hell would be a welcome escape from what hideous unlife looms before me, but it is no less a punishment than I deserve. That I was enslaved mind and body to a serpentine demon who wore a Varisian’s skin does not pardon me. It is my weakness that led the Jenivere, her crew, and her passengers to their doom.

That Ieana has abandoned me here is nothing more than the fate I deserve. I do not beg forgiveness, but I despair that she lives still, and that she seeks something dire on this forsaken isle—she seemed particularly interested in Red Mountain. If you read this and you be a kind soul, seek out what I have become and destroy me, and then seek out Ieana and slay her as well. And to those whose lives I have helped destroy, I can only apologize from this, my dark cradle and darker grave.

We came back up and they continued exploring. A little while later, Jasper, Ishirou and Jig-ren-doh came back and said that both Traine and Crusher were dead, and we all needed to head back down and finish off the Mother of the cannibals. We did so after a hard battle. After it was done, Jask said that she must have been an undead cleric of the snake god. Sasha told us that Traine would not wish to be brought back as they had gotten to know each other well while standing last watch together, so Jask used the scroll of raise dead to bring back Crusher, and we buried Traine out in the jungle.

Aerys
