This weekend is a friend's birthday and the tradition is that I run a Call of Cthulhu inspired one shot for her and friends. Every year the system varies and this year I want to do something with superheroes as I think everyone would enjoy a little monster thrashing.
So for a oneshot would it be best to:
-Play familiar DC characters v. some lovecraftian plot in a standard DCU
-Play somewhat familiar DC Characters v. some lovecraftian plot in an Elseworlds type setting
-Play original characters v. lovecraftian plot in a standard DCU
-Play original characters v. lovecraftian plot in what is recongizable as a DCU inspired original setting
Thoughts?

I'd go with a "alternate but not that different DCU," but you may want to throw in some DC specific mythos inspiration, such using the Thanagaran Ichthultu as a bad guy.

Right now I am leaning towards 1930s and a young Thomas Wayne (detective) and Alex Luthor (a scientist) are members of the Secret Society for Justice. They are called to Kansas to investigate a strange messianic cult built around "the Star Child."
My other thought was 1880s London where Lord Kent and Lady Diana are called in after the British Museum is taken over by cultist. They fight their way past the Grundy Golem and into a recreation of an Egyptian Temple where the Cult of the Black Pharaoh transforms the young American reporter William Batson into the Champion of Shazam -Black Adam.
