Magic Jar has raised its fair share of questions regarding its use, but I'm not even getting that far - it's the spell description that already has me stumped.
Range medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Target one creature
Who is this creature being targeted? The text states "you place your soul in a gem or large crystal", but neither the caster nor the Jar are targeted by the spell. And the range doesn't match that from which you can attempt to take over bodies once in the Jar either, suggesting the spell would allow others than the caster to go body-hopping. However, the text only refers to "you" and "your life force". So why does the spell have a person other than the caster as target?

Poor wording of the spell description I think.
To cast the spell, the magic jar must be within spell range and you must know where it is, though you do not need line of sight or line of effect to it. When you transfer your soul upon casting, your body is, as near as anyone can tell, dead.
Range in this case determines how far the magic jar has to be from you when you cast it.
Target line seems to refere to the target of your possession, despite possession having different range than the spell itself.I can only guess that target is creature you possess instead of reptacle for your soul because of Saving Throw or Spell Resistance lines which clearly apply to subject of possession instead of the gem.
Overall the spell would benefit from some rewriting.
