Looking for advice on teaching

Are there any professional junior high/high school teachers on these boards? I'd really like to get some advice on changing careers to teaching. I'm concerned about retirement if I make this switch.

I am a secondary teacher in Australia. If you are based in the United States, I am not sure how much help I can be to you. However, if you have any general questions about being a teacher I would be happy to give some advice. I have been teaching as a permanent appointment for seven years.

Similarly, I am a British secondary school teacher. There are plenty of teachers on the boards, you're probably best just asking your questions as that will save the other teachers here from posting twice.

In the U.S., the effect on your benefits will depend on the state in which you teach. I'm in California and could give you information for that state.

I would suggest shock collars, but I don't think that's legal in your line of work unlike mine. :)

And I'd point out that you should not expect to be paid anywhere near what you deserve.

Also - depending on the school you should be prepared for the job being pretty tough on a psychological level.

We get paid? :)

True. Do not enter the teaching profession for the money or "the holidays"! The great myth is teachers have lots of holiday leave and that means a grand lifestyle between terms.

Not true. I spend my holidays preparing for the following term. If I am going to ensure I offer the best standard of teaching and address the varying ability of students, I need to bring my A-game to classroom.

Teaching is a rewarding profession and you will have a chance to really achieve some amazing results with your students. However, it does encroach on your lifestyle if you allow it too. I spend a lot of time at school events and time away from my family.

When I first started teaching I had the wrong mindset for the job. Now I could never see myself back in an office, I love being in front of the classroom. The rewards are more significant than an annual bonus or an end of quarter party.
