(FR) Shades and Shadow Magic and Other Stuff

4th Edition

Liberty's Edge

Might be joining a 4th edition game as well as Forgotten Realms but to be honest I haven't kept up on anything that happened after the implosion. So I have some questions just because I got curious.

(Before continuing I should add these are questions I'm looking to have answered. For those that are angry at whatever changes/occurance happened, this isn't the thread to vent that frustration. This is all about the info :D )

Ok so the two right out the gate, what's up with the Shade now and Shadow magic in general? Do they both still exist? Just one? Neither? If they still exist, how big of a role do they play in the world as it stands now?

How many years after the magical implosion (I don't even remember what its called anymore) does the current 4th edition stuff take place?

Which major gods are left and are there any minors left or did they get wiped out? Anything really change with the current living gods/goddesses?

And finally do Neverwinter and Baldur's Gate still exist and if so are they generally the same as back in the day?

That will do for now and thanks.

(though as an aside and off topic, is there any regeneration in 4th edition?)

The renewed realm of Netheril is ruled by the Shades. They have rejuvenated the desert of Anarauch and now rule the realm of Sembia. They have another enclave that comes and goes over Sembia. Shar is still the principle goddes of the Shadovar.

Shadow magic is no more; sort of. With the fall of the weave, the shadow weave collapsed as well. Now, there is a power source called shadow that takes its powers from the shadowfell. Thematically, it is very similar but it is not ruled by Shar.

I forget how far along the timeline moved but i think it is about 100 years.

Check a wiki on the gods. There was a lot of change.

Neverwinter and the Shades are tied together now. I won't spoil RA Salvatores new book but that covers what is going on.

Baldur's Gate is the world's largest tent city.

Graynore said the "Gist" of it. The magical implosion that you refer to is called the Spellplague. It was an even caused by an alliance between Shar and Cyric to murder Mystra on her home plane of Dweomerheart. Once slain, the weave unraveled, casuing all sorts of eldritch chaos in the planes above, the material plane, and the abyss below.

Deities that have changed:
* Tyr killed Helm in a fight over the love of Tymora, (possibly facilitated by Cyric).

* Tyr, greving over his dead friend, gives all duties on Celestia to Torm and goes off into the Abyss to kill as many demons and devils as possible in a suicidal run.

* Lathander "dies" and is reborn as Amaunator, a LG deity of the Dawn.

* All but Lloth die in the Drow pantheon

* All but one (possible 2) deities die in the Duergar pantheon.

* Talos is revealed to be an aspect of Gruumsh

* Grummsh gains a Exarch named Obould

* Bane gains an Exarch called Fzoul Chembryl

* Sehanine Moonbow is revealed to be an aspect of Selune

* Azuth is supposedly Killed along with Velsharoon since they were on the plane with Mystra when it was destroyed.

Other changes:
* Spellplague created "changed-lands" and "plague-lands" and "earth-motes (floating pieces of land)".

* Abier collided with Toril, a plane shift that caused certain parts of Faerun (namely Unther, Mulhorandi, and Maztica) to be over-lapped with Abier. Thus bring in the race of Dragonborn and their slew of problems.

* Tieflings and Genasi gain a greater importance in Faerun.

* Evermeet is now mostly in the Feywild, cut off from the material plane and Toril.

* The elves retake and establish a stron nation in Myth Drannor.

* Cormyr remains mostly unchanged.

* Vilhond Reach is now pretty much plague-land.

* Great chasm opens up in the middle of the Sea of Fallen Stars and drains alot of it into the Underdark. This creats a lot of problems for cities along the shore as they have to re-locate to the edge of the sea or slowly die off.

* The current year in FR is 1479 DR. So, 104 years have passed since the previous v3.5E year of 1375 DR.

Aside from the above major changes, there are some other things that have changed (Damara and Vassa are controlled by Warlock knights or the Zhentarim is just a loose organization with small cells since the Shades pretty much blew them up.)

NOTE: Some of the current novels change some things I've stated above, so you might want to read them or find out their synopsis and incorporate those changes into the campaign setting.

Hope that helps you as well.

Yes, there is regeneration in 4E. Trolls, Vampires, Werewolves all have regeneration.

Hell fighters can get regen when bloddied as a 2nd level utility power (granted its a once a day thing) it represents them sucking it up and charging on in the face of an enourmous beat down.
