Eight foot long squids are dragging poor fishermen off their boats and chewing them up.
Actually, besides the fact that they actually dragged some guys off of boats, what surprised me was learning these animals hunt in schools of 1000!

Interesting, but overly sensational. Reading the comments along with the article provides a lot of less-biased information (as well as some rather more biased disinformation on other subjects). Here's the better stuff:
"The Humboldt squid is a well-known denizen of the Humboldt Current, a COLD water current in the eastern Pacific. They are not particularly interested in warm water. If the little buggers have been moving lately, I'd suspect global cooling to be the culprit, if anything. They have been moving in large numbers into the Sea of Cortez and the waters off California for at least the last decade.
The Humblodt squid puts up a hell of a fight when hooked, and so has been a favorite of nocturnal sport fishermen for many years. However it has nothing to do with the "giant squid" Architeuthis - not even the same genus."
"this writer is seriously fishing for a story... these are not giant squid. they range at best 5.7 feet main body length. during the day they live 660 to 2300 ft underwater. they end up hurting people... wait for it... because they swim up further to feed at night while folks are fishing... wait for it... other squid. little, little squid. but wait there's more: fisherman also target the humboldts... they use green lights to simulate plankton. so when these folks get pulled into the water on their own lines... it isn't fare for a hollywood movie (again), is it?"
