Help with prices for custom items and unusual pets

Advice

Help please!

I've got players who are looking for prices for some unusal things.

The first is a custom pair of magical goggles with a continuous Death Watch effect.

The second is a baby shocker lizard, wanted only as a pet (not for combat purposes).

Thoughts on fair values for these requests? Much appreciated!

The Shocker Lizard was recently brought up, and estimated about 200 GP.... (even if he's not using it for combat, its still a better guard for nobels than a riding dog @ 150 GP)

Since the Deathwatch spell doesn't give a game-breaker ability (but see below), I would suggest to follow the base guidelines for a continuous magic item.

Spell Level x Caster Level x 2000 gp x duration multiplier

So, in this case, 1 x 1 x 2000 x 1.5 (base duration 10 minutes/level) = 3000 gp

Now, since the spell has a couple of 'extra abilities', I would tinker with this base price. Specifically, the spell allows to thwart a 'feign death' ability (since you can determine if the creature within range is effectively dead or not), but this can be easily included in the base price IMHO. More important, however, is the ability to determine if a creature within range is living, undead or construct. This could be effectively almost trivial or game-breaking depending on the type of campaign (in a 'Vampire The Masquerade'-like campaign, for example, being able to know if the beautiful lady in the back of the room is a powerful Vampire or not could ruin an adventure), so that would effectively be campaign-dependant.

I would say that in a 'generic' campaign I would price the item up to 4.000 gp (slightly more than the 'base' price), while in a 'gothic-horror' campaign I would price it at least x10 (30.000 gp or more), if not prohibiting it outright.

Just my 2c.

Simon,

here's the thread where I asked about the shocker lizard when I was first thinking about it. Mostly, the answer came down to a DM decision. :)
