In about a week and a half, I will be leaving the country on business for three weeks. I'm anticipating that I won't have ready access to the internet, so I need some books to read in my downtime.
I am a HUGE G.R.R. Martin fan and would like to read fantasy books of a similar nature. I would like to get into a great series if possible.
Alternately, I am a very big James Clavell fan and have read all of his books. I am interested in Asia, Middle Eastern, and African historical fiction.
Thanks!

Have you tried the Dragon Prince and Dragon Star trilogies by Melanie Rawn? Any of the Shannara books by Terry Brooks?
(There are other fantasies I would like to recommend, but I think you'd find them not to be even remotely similar to Martin. And I assume that you've already read all the essentials, like Lord of the Rings.)

Pick up "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss or "Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch. IMO, best fantasy books released lately with Martin's series. If you like Clavell and Fantasy, sounds like you might be a Guy Gavriel Kay fan. Check out Werthead's posts on this board; might be the guy you are looking for.
