The Crescent Sign - Mouse Guard

Hello to the players in my Mouse Guard game, thank you for signing up.

I thought it was about time I got a thread together for information. Please stop by and say hello, and feel free to ask any questions about the game, the setting, or anything else you might be curious about.

I'll be making pre-gen characters available sometime next week.

Also, it looks like Curaigh was forced to drop out, so we do currently have an open slot, so anyone didn't get in through the lottery and was really hoping to play, now is your chance!

I hope its ok, but I signed up for your mouseguard game. I would like to run the a game for my friends, and it would be great to get a chance to play before I do.

I really can't wait for the game, thanks for running it.

Glad to have you on board!

I was excited to get in your game. I have heard a lot of good things about Mouse Guard.

Thanks for setting it up.

I wanted to get a little playtesting done before I posted pregens, which is why they are somewhat late. Mouse Guard get's a little shaky with 6 players, as it's really only built for 2-5, but this is a con and I wanted as many people as I could handle to get a chance to play. I think we'll have fun, I've certainly enjoyed coming up with ideas for the game.

You will need d6's for this game, I would bring 6-10 to be safe, but if you have more, bring them. Matching sets are nice because you can easily tell which are yours. I'll have some extras, but I don't know if I can provide for everyone that shows up, so if you forget to bring yours, you may have to share.

Before we get to the pregens, lets do a quick rundown of what the various entries mean.

Explanation of terms:

Spoiler:

Age: This is in years. Yes that makes them very old for mice, but they also wield swords and stuff, so, you know.

Home: This is your hometown, where you came from, your old stomping ground, etc and so on.

Fur Color: Self explanatory. Brown is most common, followed by blonde and gray. Black and white are uncommon, red is rare.

Rank: This is your rank in the Mouse Guard. Tenderpaws are fresh recruits, not even official guardmice yet. Guardmouse is next, followed by Patrol Guard, and then Patrol Leader is the highest you'll see (there are a couple more above that, but they don't usually patrol). Being Patrol Leader does not let you boss other players around.

Cloak: You receive your cloak from your mentor once you get promoted up from Tenderpaw, it's color (chosen by your mentor) represents an element of your personality (or an element of personality they think you should work on)

Parents: These are your parents. If you drop by, they'll happily feed you and give you a place to sleep. They also taught you a skill while you were growing up, hoping you'd take on the family business, but no, you broke their poor little mouse hearts by running off to get killed for some crazy ideal. You should write to them more often.

Senior: When you show up to join the Guard, they don't just hand you a sword and say "have at 'em!" First, they make you work as an apprentice with one of their various craftsmice or artisans. This guy makes you do some backbreaking labor to build your character.

Mentor: After you spend a year toiling in service to the Guard, they make you a Tenderpaw and assign you a Mentor, who introduces you to patrolling, shows you the ropes, has you do some more grunt work, and finally decides whether or not you can hack it as a Guardmouse. Those of you playing Tenderpaws should note that one of the other players will be your mentor.

Enemy: Everyone has an enemy, someone they pissed off at some point in their life. I've given that mouse a name, plus maybe a job and a home. I'm leaving it up to you to decide what your history is with them. Why do they hate you? Do you deserve their scorn, or are you wrongfully maligned? Use your imagination, have some fun with it.

Friend: The opposite of enemy. Sort of like your parents, they'll help you out in a jam if they can, and might be able to feed and house you for a night if your friends don't cause too much trouble. Again, I'm leaving it to you to come up with the history behind this, so get creative.

Nature(Mouse): We'll get into how this stat works later, but the gist of it is this: the higher your nature score, the more mouse-like you are. The lower your nature score, the more "human" you are.

Will: This is your mental stat, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma rolled into one.

Health: This is your physical stat, Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution rolled into one.

Resources: This is your purchasing power.

Circles: This is how well connected you are, or how good you are at getting in touch with people.

Belief: This is the real meat of the character. Beliefs are a short ethical or moral statement that describe the character's view of the world. Beliefs are pretty important to the game, but I'll wait to talk about that until we hit the table.
Goal: This is a goal your character hopes to accomplish during this mission. Since I haven't given you the actual mission yet, not all of these will make sense.
Instinct: This is a habit or reaction, something your character always does (or never does). It's a fun way to get into or out of trouble.

Skills: Most of these are pretty self explanatory, this is the stuff that you know how to do. Note that some skills are listed as "[something]-wise", these are called "Wises", they represent special knowledge-type skills that you can use to help yourself. If you have any questions about what other skills do, just ask, I'll fill you in.

Traits: These are the various quirks and special qualities your mouse has. In the game, these are very important. They each have an upside and a downside, so you can use them to give yourself a little extra help, OR you can use them against yourself to get bonuses later (this becomes very important). I'll also explain the numbers after the traits later.

Gear: This is the equipment you're carrying. Some of it is fluff, some of it might be able to help you out.

Okay, now onto the Pregens!

Whew, done!

Call dibs now if you'd like, or wait until Friday, either works for me.

Also, if you want to be Completely and Utterly Awesome, save and print this image, and then draw in your chosen character over the blank mouse provided. Bring it to the con and people will be very very jealous. Don't give me no "I'm not a good artist" excuses neither!

I'm really excited about the game guys, I can't wait to play.

I would like to play Wayne.

I guess I'll have to teach these young whipper snappers a thing or two.

See you this weekend.

I have marked your name down upon the character sheet.

So are you familiar at all with the comic, or just interested in the game?

I have the hard cover fall and winter books. My kids like the comics and I want to give the game a try to see if they could play.

Thanks a bunch to all my players in this game, it was a lot of fun running Mouse Guard for you! There are a couple parts of the system I feel I didn't explain very well, but you all seemed to pick up on things pretty quickly, and it was a true delight playing with you.

If you have any questions or comments, I'd love some feedback. I'm hoping to run some more Mouse Guard next year, and so far my plan is to have a smaller group and use the first two hours for character creation.

PS: I'm going to get all my pictures off my camera later tonight, when I do, I'll post a link to your mouse drawings on this thread.
