Okay, I tried doing some yoga today and it was definitely an experience. I hurt in places that I did not could hurt. The main reason I am studying yoga is for weight loss. Is it worth continuing?

Dark Archive

I was led to believe yoga was low impact, but so far it doesn't seem like it. Of course maybe I should get some sweats instead of trying to do it in jeans.

One of my good friends takes Yoga. You will loose wieght in Yoga, but that is not the main reason to go. The main reason is that it helps you become healthier. His back was hurting before he started. He has not had any major back troubles since he started it about 2 to 3 years ago. OTOH, you need to keep up with it on a regular basis. Good luck David.

Yes!!! Get sweats, or even better some gym shorts. Also, get some good shoes ASAP!!! Your feet are very important in Yoga. You MUST take care of them.

well, i'm not sure yoga is good for weight loss, as it rarely increases your heart rate.

but is it worth it? definitely. there are many, many benefits to yoga. it can improve strength and flexibility, it helps you relax and reduce stress, and there is no competition involved, so you can go at your own pace.

you might start out with easy or gentle yoga, as going to a class beyond your abilities can be extremely difficult and frustrating. but find an easy class to start with and a teacher you like, and it can be a great experience.

i give yoga my highest recommendation.

and yeah, wear sweatpants. ;-)

So far I have only been working out with a show taped off of FitTV. Being unemployed has put a crimp in the budget for actual classes.

Good luck on finding a job, David. Oh, and I agree with all that Erik has said.

Comfy clothes are essential. Weight loss is usually through more of toning up, IIRC. Also good for keeping joints limber and muscles stretched.

So far what I have had the most trouble with is upward dog and downward dog and a few of the associated poses. There is one where you lift one arm and the corresponding leg off the ground that I struggle with. Mostly It's the soreness afterwords that I struggle with.

Actually I am heading to law school at the University of Idaho in August. I am hoping that there are some student yoga classes I can take when I get there.

If I want to do yoga, do I have to take care of David's feet as well?

David, please post back here from time to time on how its going. I've been toying with the idea of yoga and/or pilates for overall personal wellness, and I'd be curious to read on others' experiences.

I read an article in Prevention magazine about using yoga for weight loss, which is where I got the idea to try yoga. Apparently it's on-line as well.

Will do. Actually, other than a pain in my head which is more likely from allergies then from yoga I have been feeling progressively better since I first posted. I can almost feel the energy flowing through my body. Although my knees have a tendency to pop when I walk.

Take yoga, martial arts, or related exercises slowly so you can work yourself into it. You will be suprised how the body reacts when you have never done a specific posture, stance or strike. I would advise warming up and stretching prior to the class. You don't have to be the expert over night.

Overtime, as you build up your strength in regards to postures, you will start to notice a difference in your overall health, flexibility, breathing, etc.

The main focus may be weight loss, but the long term is a sustainable exercise habit, including proper diet.

If you want to be any good at it.

Well I'm not one to skip learning my fundamentals. Looks at Fryer, lotions his hands and pats his lap. "Up ya go."

I screwed my back up a year ago and ended up going to a physical therapist. Turns out the exercises he prescribed me to fix my back and strengthen my core were 90% yoga. Stick with it. Why wouldn't you?

You don't have the heart for yoga because you refuse to have the feet for it.

Yoga day 2: I feel better today, not a sore or stiff. I still hyave to modify some of the posses, particularly the balance ones, but I'm going to keep powering through.

Dark Archive

Day 3: I am still struggling with posses like downward and upward facing dog and some of the balance posses like Standing bow. On the other hand I am getting really good at some of what the instructor describes as the more difficult posses.

Dark Archive

Also, I am already starting to see some results. My posture is better already and my legs don't hurt as much when I walk long distances. Of course I'm still sore and that has made it hard to sleep at night, but I am expecting that to go away after a few more days.

No clue.

Hey David. Have you been able to keep this up? Have you seen any of the results you were hoping for?

Hello guys,

In case it would be useful, my wife happens to be a yoga instructor.
If you have some questions, I can ask her to take the keyboard and answer, if you want.
She might not be available often, but once in a while she could visit and give some insight or advice.

Om ;)

I have been curious about taking Tai Chi. Not the same thing, but I thought somewhat relevant.

Knock 'em dead in law school David. Once you graduate, I can make lawyer jokes about you. :)

Both yoga and the martial arts can be very good for your circulation.

After I fell out of martial arts I started to have a much more stiff back. When I started to some of my old workout routine I found I could sleep much easier.

I couldn't do some of the yoga positions from a site I was looking because my pelvis is tilted on one side, meaning putting my hip up to a certain position can be kind of painful. If you're feeling some kind of pain from your joints, be sure to stop immediately! You might not be doing it wrong, you might just be all malformed and creepy like me.

Tai Chi I haven't taken before, but it was part of my style in some ways, mostly the breathing. I think yoga does breathing exercises as well. You can feel your lungs completely fill up with air, and they can relax the body for very loose, deliberate motions.

Don't forget to breathe! Your body can breathe on its own, but you can end up having more control over it if you make sure to pay attention to how you're breathing.

Oh, and stick with it at least until you can learn how to breathe fire and teleport. Those are important skills for a lawyer.

I tried yoga for a little while, I train for powerlifting but I felt like trying yoga for knowing my body better, increase resistance, having a better control my breath as support training for lifting weights.

I think it was excellent, but you can't really do it if you weigh too much in the start. At 350 lbs, I felt pain while doing many yoga exercises, especially the wrists. I will try to lose some weight before doing yoga again.

Does that mean he turns into a pony when he graduates?

If you're feeling pain on a new exercise routine it's a sign that you're putting in some real effort and you are actually making progress.

That would be classic. I believe there is at least one other lawyer on the boards. He/She should get a pony too.

I am a lawyer and I didn't turn into a pony...

That is my first guess.

Thanks Crimson Jester. I didn't think to check his recent posts to see if he was still active here. I just wanted to check back with him because we recently got cable service with On Demand shows, including some on yoga.

I would say to send him a message on facebook but he seems to have dropped that for the nonce as well.

Hey guys, first off I want to thank Cosmo on letting me know this thread was alive again. No I have not been able to keep up on my yoga. The classes that they offer at the student recreation center are $365 and I don't have that kind of money. Plus, as someone up thread commented I have a full plate as it is. I am spending anywhere from 55 to 75 hours a week on school work. Luckly I am at a school where most things on campus and in town are close enough to walk or I would not get any exercise at all.

Thanks, turns out that the school I am attending is Cosmo and Joshua's alma mater. I am hoping to lure them here at some point for the purposes of gaming.

Jack are you saying that I am suspicious because I am a lawyer or because I don't have an avatar?

Good luck with your studies David.

Even a few push-ups and sit-ups every morning as well as taking the stairs whenever you can will help. I wish you nothing but the best in your chosen career of blood sucking. :)

Good Luck David. And as was also mentioned check out the on Demand features of your cable TV for free yoga, as well as several online courses that are free.

I have looked them up for my sister in law.

I do take the stairs as much as possible, unless my knees are hurting too badly. I live on the 3rd floor of the dorms which helps. I also try and block out a half hour each day to go to the gym on campus and at least walk on the treadmill. Well it is back to class for me. Time for Legal Writing & Research and Civil Procedure.

I will look that up. I don't have on demand on my cable but on-line sounds good.
