I've got my 52" HD tv. I have my PS3 with blu-ray. Today, I was super excited to learn that the Lord of the Rings trilogy releases on blu-ray next week. Then I was disgusted to learn it would be the theatrical version, and not the extended cut. That might release next year. What the frick?

Sounds like a George Lucas move.
I'll be pissed when I buy yet ANOTHER version of the Star Wars movies.
I'll do it, but I'll still be pissed.
I won't be buying a Star Wars movie unless he puts the original trilogy on Blu-Ray. NOT the version he edits every couple of years, the g&~@$$n theatrical releases where Han shoots first, and Vader's ghost doesn't look like he just spent 5 minutes howling the word "no".

Part of the reason for the wait on the release of the Extended Blu-Ray is that they'd like to coincide it with the Hobbit's release. Ideally, I'd imagine they'd release the extended blu-ray with an 'extra' Hobbit trailer in HD.
From the original link:
"It was previously believed that the Extended Edition Blu-ray release would be held back until the theatrical release of 'The Hobbit', but Jackson's remarks seem to indicated otherwise."

As much as I hate their decision to not put out both blu-ray sets at the same time, honestly, how many theatrical sets would even get sold if the extended version set came out at the same time?
I saw the theatrical versions in the theaters but only bought copies of the extended versions on dvd, and if the blu-ray versions are that much better in quality and have enough new bonus material, then I will buy the extended versions again when they are released.

Yeah, it's a pretty flagrant double-dip. I'll be avoiding these, both because I want to discourage this behavior in the future, and because I simply have zero interest in watching the theatrical releases (in any format) when I have the EEs available.
It probably doesn't help that my TV only does 720P...

Damn. I just found out that the Blu-Ray will also include digital copies you can save to your laptop/PC.
There goes my moral high-ground. Right out the flippin' window with the ability to watch the movies on my laptop without switching discs.
There's software that can do that with every disc.
I'll wait until they release the proper version of those movies.
Or maybe I won't wait, and just not get any BluRay version of those movies.
