Orca Kills Trainer at SeaWorld

This was strange, as we were planning on taking the boys to Sea World this summer. I've heard that most of the "tricks" that killer whales perform in the shows are really just pantomimes of their hunting behaviors in the wild.

My condolences to the trainer's friends and family.

As one living in san Diego, which also has a Seaworld, my condolences are echoed. I don't recall that ever happening before here in SD.

According to CBS News, this orca has killed before. He was one of three orcas that killed a trainer up in Vancouver a few years back.

Wow, and they had no problem with working with this orca? man did they learn anything from Sigfried and Roy?

Maybe they thought the change of scenery had changed him.

I'm guessing the answer is no.

Being an ex-inmate, I kinda feel for the poor whale. Bad enough I was locked up for actually doing something, worse that Orca got the slammer for just being pretty. But still, it's tragic and I hope the trainer's family has all of the support they need to get through this.

:(

This is probably the only time in my life that I will say this, but...

... I really agree with what the spokespeople from PETA had to say about the matter.

Orcas are wild animals and no matter how much training you give it Orcas are wild animals.

I actually surprised that stuff like this doesn’t happen more often.

I feel for his family but his job was to get into a large tank of water with a wild animal, it was a risk he was willing to take.

All the right things, maybe, but for all the wrong reasons, an organisation so quick to hypocrisy and voilence rarely has any decent people further up the chain than ground level, and would happily make use of a tragedy to further their agenda.

I'm all for animal rights, very much so. But PETA are not in it for goodwill's sake.

For safety's sake the whale should have been released after the first death. This time the trainer wasn't even in the water.
