It was Ama, not Kelara who was struck down. Iflen probably wouldn't have such an emotional response, so I'll allow you to revise this round's action, if you want.

Kelara looks at the battlefield, gasping as Ama goes down with one swift stroke of the mercenary's greatsword. Panicking, she quickly retreats a bit, then casts another sleep spell at the mercenary.

Move to C4, then cast another sleep spell at the mercenary.

Male Human Sorceror 1 / Fighter 1

lol yay! Iflen goes back in time and regains his dignity :P instead...

Iflen can't help but grin as the golin collapses in a sizzling heap, That'll teach ya, you stupid creature!

Iflen's grin is cut short though as the armored man cleaves through Ama's body in a single slice. Iflen marvels at how easily the mercenary deals out death. He must do this all the time...he's not gonna get me though! he thinks to himself and darts foward, eyes on the blood soaked greatsword at all times. Iflen's mind reaches out and assaults the merc's unprotected little brain as he hopes this will give him enough time to take the bastard down!

Move to E3 and cast Daze on the last merc. DC14 Will save or lose next standard action

Results of Round 3

Conrad –
Casts Acid Splash but misses.
Moves to A3.

Kelara –
Casts Sleep
Merc will save (DC 15) : 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13 - fail !

The mercenary has been defeated. The party is now out of combat.

Ama is at -2 hp and needs to be stabilized by a heal check (or a DC 10 constitution check by Ama with a -2 penalty.) I think Kelara has an ability that restores HP.

Stabilization Check 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19

As Ama silently fights for his life, the mercenary lies on the road face-down, snoring loudly.

Male Elf Wizard 1

Although his first battle was victorious ... and had only lasted a few minutes ... It had felt like hours.

Realizing they are not out of danger yet, his mind takes control.

"Quick ... get his sword away from him ..."
"Does anyone have some rope ?"
"We should bind him ... and someone should look after Ama."

"Onyx, please fly up and see if the other two thieves aren't near."

With a small caw Onyx flies away and takes a look.

Male Human Sorceror 1 / Fighter 1

Iflen picks up the Mercs massive greatsword and heaves it onto his shoulder.

"Who needs ropes?" he says bluntly "This bastard killed the druid. He deserves to die himself." Iflen feels the weight of the greatsword bobbing it up and down as he considers dropping it onto the mercs neck. "Are you alright Kelara?" he asks sympathetically.

Male Elf Wizard 1

"I agree he has commited a heinous crime."
"But if we are to kill him outright ... how does that separate us from the bad guys ?"

"Let's tie him up, tend to Ama and discuss our next course of action."

My healing ability only affects good-aligned creatures... Which makes it almost useless in this group.

Kelara smiles to herself as the mercenary drops down asleep, and runs to Ama. She bends next to his body and tries to bind his worse wounds and stabilize him. At the same time she calls to the others: "Bind and guard him or something, my spell won't last long!"

Heal check
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Conrad wrote:

"Fine" says Iflen with indignation, more than a bit annoyed that Kelara did'nt even respond to his comment, Whats up with her?

"I have no rope but I have something just as good"

Iflen grins. I love doing this. He weaves the arcane gesture with ease, having learnt to impose his will on others early on in his childhood. "Submineeai!" commands Iflen as he reaches out with his mind into the merc's.

Charm Person: Will save DC 17 (10 +1spell level +4Cha +2Bloodline Arcana)

"Put your weapon away" he says to Conrad "You should probably help Kelara. The big guys my friend now but I'll bet he still hates you" Iflen grins and crouches opposite the merc waiting for him to wake up.

Merc Will save 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 - save.

Iflen senses that his charm has failed.

Ama cannot be roused from his unconsciousness. But he is not dying.

Male Human Sorceror 1 / Fighter 1

"Hmm this has never happened before" Iflen mumbles to himself. "The guy must have a lot of willpower...guess we better tie him up then, does anyone have any rope?"

Iflen takes a quick look over the goblin and the other merc to see if they have any rope or anything that could be used to tie him up with.

Perception check if needed for looking over the mercs1d20 - 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 = 11

Iflen finds a long length of rope in the human mercenary's pack. This is used to tie up the man. He awakes cursing and writhing, but does not overcome the binds.

OOC:

Here's the other stuff in the NPC's backpacks:

Merc:
A vial of oil, possibly magical
2 potions
250 gp

Goblin:
a ring, possibly magical
a dagger, possibly magical
6 sp

And there are weapons that scattered all over the trail:

masterwork greatsword
longbow
a wand, very very magical

Male Human Sorceror 1 / Fighter 1

Iflen goes over and picks up the wand feeling the magic of it coursing up his arm and through his very being. Hah! and I thought this thing would be hard to use, its easy you just point and burn.

Our hero then moves closer to the merc whilst saying to the others "I'll guard him, hows Ama doing?" Iflen stands about 10ft away from the merc and points the wand at his face. "Move and you burn" he threatens with a blank cold face.

Threaten check:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

The man crosses his eyes and moans.

"If you're going to try to scare me again, then just kill me now."

Onyx returns to tell Conrad that the elf woman and her human companion are returning to the grove.

I assume you've taken the breatplate and ring with you.

Male Human Sorceror 1 / Fighter 1

Yeah we did, Iflen's got the breastplate strapped to his back. I think conrad took the ring.

Iflen looks annoyed that his threat did'nt work and considers burning the man just to ease his anger.

"Whats your bird say elf man?"

Male Elf Wizard 1

"Onyx just informs me the other two are returning to the grove ..."

"Let's gag him, tie him up to the trees here and ... get the other two ?"

The prisoner laughs mockingly.

"Ha! You could barely handle me and Knu. Now you're down one, what hope have you against the rest of us? Free me, give up the artifacts and we might let you live."

Male Elf Wizard 1

Enraged by the words, seeing the druid dying and Ama getting cut down by his huge sword. Conrad looses his normally calm demeanor.

He steps up to the man and kicks him in the face, then yells at him.

"Shut up! ... You're still tied up aren't you!"

Kick in the face: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18
Damage to face: 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

"Argh!"

The mercenary shakes his head and spits out teeth.

"Is that all you can do? You fairy!"

Kelara tends to Ama while the others bind the mercenary. When he wakes up and starts making noise, she finishes stabilizing Ama and moves closer to him, Iflen and Conrad, picking up the dagger as she walks.

Turning to her friends, she consults them quietly, a short distance from the man: "My first hunch would be turning him to the authorities or someone else. The problem is there's no one to turn him to now. Any ideas what next?"

To the man himself, she adds, with a smile: "What makes you think we haven't taken care of your friends before? They weren't much of a match to my sleep spells, just as both of you weren't".

Bluff
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

Male Human Sorceror 1 / Fighter 1

"Just leave him there, we can decide later if we wanna come back for him or let him starve" says Iflen raising his eyebrows at the merc. "First though shouldnt we get these artifacts sorted out"

Iflen clicks his fingers twice and swirls them in a half circle before muttering "Fluminera" and gathering up some of the items.

Iflen puts the greatsword down and casts detect magic, gathering up any items that radiate magic. If the Merc has some on him and tries to resist Iflen punches him in the face. Attack:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19 Dmg:1d3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 nonlethal

Kelara Monderskan wrote:

Hearing this, the merc falls silent.

OOC:

These items all radiate magic:

Two potions
A vial of oil
A ring
A dagger
A wand

There are no other magic items in the vicinity.

OOC:

I'm going to reveal what kind of magic items they are. IMHO, there are some things translate badly in a PBP. For example, games can get hung up for days waiting for minor skill check rolls which don't add to the enjoyment of players. So ...

2 potions of cure light wounds

oil of bless weapon

ring of protection +1

+1 dagger , cold resistance 2. "Brightflame" is written in draconic on the hilt.

wand : this is a wand of burning hands with 37 charges remaining. But it is a complicated item with other powers that eludes everyone's analysis.

Kelara lets herself smile a bit after fooling the mercenary, although there's still no good idea about what to do with him. With a low voice she tells Iflen: "I won't be happy about the possibility of him roaming about in these forests behind us. He could ambush us freely once he finds himself a weapon..."

Can we use a potion to heal Ama, as we don't have another way of doing it? If so:

Discerning the potions are ones of healing, Kelara picks one of them, then walks to Ama, opens his mouth and starts spilling some of it in, encouraging Ama to drink.

Male Human Sorceror 1 / Fighter 1

Iflen fits the wand into his belt and takes the other potion of cure light wounds also clipping it onto his belt. "Maybe this'll help Ama in not getting killed next time" Iflen says with a smile. He walks over to Ama and slips it onto his finger as Kelara pours the potion down his throat.

He waits for Ama to regain consciousness and recover then says "Come on! We have to catch up to the other two, leave him here" points at the merc "We'll come back for him later...if he's lucky"

I'll take the liberty of rolling for Ama.

Cure Light Wounds 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Ama's HP is at 3 (I think.)

The horrible gash across Ama's abdomen disappears and his eyes flutter open. Though not entirely restored, he feels well enough to stand, walk and even fight.

Male Elf Wizard 1

Anyone calling dibs on the items yet ?
I'd like the wand ... or the dagger ...

Conrad glances back at the merc ... then at the road back to the grove.

"Let's go, we should get back to the grove."
"Pray that we won't forget you .. or that there aren't any wolves about ... or worse ..."

"No, no, don't leave me here, there's too much blood around! The wolves will come for sure!"

I don't like the idea of leaving him here. Maybe we should tie him up in the grove, and put another ambush up for his two friends. I'm not sure we can take care of them at the moment without someone else getting very hurt".

Male Human Sorceror 1 / Fighter 1

"Not a bad idea beautiful" replies Iflen to kelara. "Alright you!" he says to the merc "On your feet and move! You might not be scared of me but i've got no qualms about choppin your head off!"

Bluff check 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26

Iflen will march the merc at the point of his own sword back to the grove and assume everyone else will follow. He'll grab the silver pieces off the goblin on the way past and set a fast pace to get back to the grove before the other mercs.
Conrad: I have the wand but I dont think the knife is bagsyed yet theres also an oil of bless weapon up for grabs, if no one else wants it Iflen will grab it.

After getting up and examining himself as he walked, noting with dismay the ruined state of his clothes, Ama raised one bushy eyebrow at Iflen handling the mercenary's greatsword, but said nothing, thinking. To his dismay, the mercenary's swing also ruined his wineskin, and he lamented it with a shake of his head. A small snort of amusement noted that half of the stain on his clothes-- where they were not slashed wide open-- was that of wine.

At the pace Iflen was moving, he figured that they would reach the grove before too long, and in truth, could not figure what his plan may have been. Was he going to kill the mercenary if the others did not surrender whatever artifacts that they had gathered? Did he expect the others to give up without a fight? Frowning, he leaned heavily on his staff as he walked, looking to the others with a curious expression to see if they had gathered any more about his plan than he.

OOC:

Here's the tentative distribution of the items. Let me know if there are changes:

potion of cure light wounds - Iflen
oil of bless weapon – Ama
ring of protection - Kelara
+1 dagger - Conrad
Wand – Iflen

The other two mercenaries are already at the grove when the heroes arrive. They are lounging on the ancient altar; a deliberate, mean-spirited act of sacrilege.

"Grelm?" calls out the pudgy man. "Idiot! How could you have let them take you?"

The elf drops to her feet and picks up a scythe. It is a wicked-looking weapon, full of barbs running along it's inner edge.

Kelara notices the other two mercenaries when stepping into the grove. Alarmed, she signals to her friends to closely guard the captive mercenaries, then calls out to his two friends: "Your friend was lucky to have his life saved by us. We could have left him for the wolves. It's four of us against two of you, which as you can see, wasn't a real challenge for us. Better let us pass and live than try to stop us and die".

Bluff: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

Sense Motive elf 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Sense Motive merc 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

"L-let Grelm free. Then we'll go our separate ways," stammers the man.

"Of course we will. Just give us the artifacts you've found and you can have your friend back alive".

If needed, another bluff check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

The elf woman scowls and brandishes her scythe.

"No, Nirashi," pleads the prisoner named Grelm. "They're tougher than they look. Give them the vial, if you got it."

Nirashi and the pudgy man have a short argument. She hands him an object, which he holds up. "This is the Vial of Pure Water. It's empty, but that's because it's the glass that's magical." He approaches the heroes slowly while Nirashi remains beside the altar.

Male Human Sorceror 1 / Fighter 1

Iflen walks over and takes the glass from the man "Magical glass eh?" he says holding it up to the light. "Thank you for your generosity" he says in a clearly sarcastic manner.

Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 6

Frowning slightly at the exchange, Ama had to wonder why it was that the mercenary that they currently held prisoner would know anything about a vial that the others had acquired. If they were retrieving the artifacts of a dead king, why would a king have a vial? His frown deepened, watching the interplay between the mercenaries, suspecting that they were being fooled.

Wary, he gauged the distance between the two groups, and took a look at the other mercenary that was not wielding a scythe.

Sense Motive1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

The mercenaries do not seem to be engaging in a deception.

Male Elf Wizard 1

Conrad, inconspicuously, casts detect magic and checks out the mercenaries during the conversation.

Also not trusting them for one bit, he listens to them intently.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Conrad Neficam wrote:

Question for all: can Conrad attempt this without the Silent Spell or Still Spell feats?
