No, too much of his base has been anti-war since the 1960s. You have to lock in the base before you start going after the other guy's voters. What the article does not mention is that just two years ago Russia was able to successfully negotiate consessions with the EU by cutting off the natural gas and oil that Russia exports to Eastern Europe. Besides Nancy Pelosi will never go along with it.

I hope you're right. My bitterness and cynicism says otherwise, but that's the joy of being a pessimist. It's often nice to be wrong. ;)

I don't understand what Buchanan is arguing in this piece...
Should the president declare he has gone the last mile for a negotiated end to Iran's nuclear program and impose the "crippling" sanctions he promised in 2008, America would be on an escalator to confrontation that could lead straight to war.
Exactly what sanctions can WE impose on Iran?
Unless I'm mistaken, they don't get their gas from us. They get their gas from countries that are too heavily tied to them economically to stop giving them gas. These countries will do what they believe is in their best interest just like they always have.
Russia has said they would go for sanctions and then backed off. Others have said so also and then worked relentlessly to lower the sanctions to the point of being ineffective. Iran just uses the potential for negotiations as a means of delaying action and the other countries jump at the chance to avoid action. Most recently, Obama restated a desire to return to negotiations with Iran.
I haven't seen any evidence to the effect that these countries will really do anything that might jeopardize their own economies, I have seen no evidence that Iran intends to meet any demands, I have seen no evidence that Iran will come to the table for any other reason than as a delaying tactic, and I have seen no evidence that these countries believe it is a problem greater than their own economies.
So, just exactly what is the US going to do in the form of sanctions that will actually cripple Japan?

LOL. I'm sure you'll forgive President Obama if he doesn't take trash advice from Human Events Online.
Sarah Palin was floating this the other day (AS A GOOD IDEA), which is just madness.
You're free to hate Buchanan, but you do know that he opposes preemptive wars like Iraq right?
I didn't catch Palin supporting war with Iran, but it wouldn't shock me.

I gather that we are going to unilaterally seize some of the funds associated with enrichment activities. I'll try to find a link.

From the link:
The step is in line with statements from administration officials that they want sanctions to target Iranian elites responsible for such activity and not the Iranian people in the hope of changing the government's behavior. However, it will be difficult to gauge their effect as it is not clear what holdings the targets may have in U.S. jurisdictions.
1. This in no way affects the gas availability to the country which was Buchanan's argument.
2. It is supposed to target the elite and the elite only so as to not effect the masses but in such a country the elite will merely pull what they need from the masses. They know this and are just making a show to appear to be doing something.3. Nothing says the sanctions will be crippling or that other countries will join in an attempt to make it crippling. In fact, it could not point to any type of effect that it would have and even stated that we do not even know what holdings these organizations have in US jurisdictions.
4. We have had very little trade with Iran since its revolution and thus we have few economic levers to pull against them. We need other nations to pull these levers and they won't. The article states that this will help firms worldwide avoid doing trade with the organizations. But, this assumes they actually wish to avoid making money. They (companies outside the US) have known all along who they are trading with. The nations they are based out of have known all along. They all trade anyway because there is money to be made.
I see nothing that is of any value being performed.

A few more bits from the link given above...
Obama said that work to broaden the U.N.'s sanctions was moving quickly, but he gave no specific timeline for the presentation of a new resolution. Russia, a traditional opponent of sanctions, appears ready to support new penalties. But another of the council's five permanent, veto-wielding members, China, which has increasingly close economic ties to Iran, can block a resolution by itself. China has said the time is not yet right for fresh sanctions.
Russia has previously said that it favors sanctions and then either changes its mind or moves to weaken them...
China will prevent sanctions so as to not burden its growing economy.

Onward Christian soldiers marching as to war
With the cross of Jesus going on before
Christ the royal Master leads against the foe
Forward into battle, see His banners go
Onward Christian soldiers marching as to war
With the cross of Jesus going on before
At the sign of triumph Satan's host doth flee
On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory
Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise
Brothers lift your voices, loud your anthems raise
Like a mighty army moves the church of God
Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod
We are not divided, all one body we
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity
Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane
But the church of Jesus constant will remain
Gates of Hell can never 'gainst that church prevail
We have Christ's own promise and that can not fail
Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng
Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song
Glory, laud and honor unto Christ the King
This through countless ages men and angels sing

I concur with all of your points. I believe Buchanan's point is not about halting Iran's nuclear program, but rather the possibility of using war with Iran as a cynical jingoistic political tool to bolster a "rally around the flag" short term political boost.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.
(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His day is marching on.
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on."
(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Since God is marching on.
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
While God is marching on.
He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.
(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.

Of course i say...
The use of war with Iran as a political tool for Obama is an interesting thought that I have seen mentioned elsewhere but I don't know if I want to side with it.
In general, I just think the situation is bad because it has incredibly bad potential and all other nations appear to simply not care.
It has gone on for so long that I don't know if we can do anything that would work other than start a war that would remove the nuclear capabilities. And, as you stated, that isn't exactly an option that anyone (myself included) is jumping at.
But, I don't necessarily see Obama as playing the war card but rather as playing the being tough with adversaries card even though it really isn't.

Well it's not a hymn.....
Artist: Drowning Pool
Song: Soldiers
On your feet, who?s with me
On your feet, who?s with me Right
One world, made better, in slaight, hard bitter, there is no compromise,
your pain your worth your sacrifice
On your feet, who?s with me
On your feet, let?s go
Every time I see inside you I see myself within you
let?s go
(whoah, yeaheah) This is for the soldiers
(whoah, yeaheah)This is for the soldiers
(whoah, yeaheah) This is for the soldiers
all for one, let?s go
On your feet, who?s with me
Lock tide, hold steady, there it goes stand ready, there is no compromise,
your pain your worth your sacrifice
On your feet, who?s with me
On your feet, let?s go
Every time I see inside you I see myself within you
let?s go
(whoah, yeaheah) This is for the soldiers
(whoah, yeaheah)This is for the soldiers
(whoah, yeaheah) This is for the soldiers
one for all, we?re coming
Every time I see inside you I see myself within you, don't let that fade away
Your pride inside of me, your honor inside me, respect inside of inside of me, go
(whoah, yeaheah) This is for the soldiers
(whoah, yeaheah)This is for the soldiers
(whoah, yeaheah) This is for the soldiers
our soldiers, let?s go
(whoah, yeaheah) This is for the soldiers
(whoah, yeaheah)This is for the soldiers

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today... I...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
Yo-o-o-u,
You may say Im a dreamer
But Im not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Imagine no possesions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
Yo-o-o-u,
You may say Im a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Sorry, Bitter Thorn; I'll stop now.

Okay, this is for Bitter Thorn.
Sing me a song, you're a singer
Do me a wrong, you're a bringer of evil
The Devil is never a maker
The less that you give, you're a taker
So it's on and on and on, it's Heaven and Hell, oh well
The lover of life's not a sinner
The ending is just a beginner
The closer you get to the meaning
the sooner you'll know that you're dreaming
So it's on and on and on, oh it's on and on and on
It goes on and on and on, Heaven and Hell
I can tell, fool, fool!
Well if it seems to be real, it's illusion
For every moment of truth, there's confusion in life
Love can be seen as the answer, but nobody bleeds for the dancer
And it's on and on, on and on and on....
They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you've got to ride it well
The world is full of Kings and Queens
who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
It's Heaven and Hell, oh well
And they'll tell you black is really white
The moon is just the sun at night
And when you walk in golden halls
You get to keep the gold that falls
It's Heaven and Hell, oh no!
Fool, fool!
You've got to bleed for the dancer!
Fool, fool!
Look for the answer!
Fool, fool, fool!

The devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal.
He was in a bind 'cos he was way behind: he was willin' to make a deal.
When he came across this young man sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot.
And the devil jumped upon a hickory stump and said: "Boy let me tell you what:
"I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a fiddle player too.
"And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.
"Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy, but give the devil his due:
"I bet a fiddle of gold against your soul, 'cos I think I'm better than you."
The boy said: "My name's Johnny and it might be a sin,
"But I'll take your bet, your gonna regret, 'cos I'm the best that's ever been."
Johnny you rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard.
'Cos hells broke loose in Georgia and the devil deals it hard.
And if you win you get this shiny fiddle made of gold.
But if you lose, the devil gets your soul.
The devil opened up his case and he said: "I'll start this show."
And fire flew from his fingertips as he resined up his bow.
And he pulled the bow across his strings and it made an evil hiss.
Then a band of demons joined in and it sounded something like this.
When the devil finished, Johnny said: "Well you're pretty good ol' son.
"But if you'll sit down in that chair, right there, and let me show you how its done."
Fire on the moun, run boys, run.
The devil's in the house of the risin' sun.
Chicken in the bread pin, pickin' out dough.
"Granny, does your dog bite?"
"No, child, no."
The devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat.
He laid that golden fiddle on the ground at Johnny's feet.
Johnny said: "Devil just come on back if you ever want to try again.
"I told you once, you son of a b!!+!, I'm the best that's ever been."
And he played fire on the mount, run boys, run.
The devil's in the house of the risin' sun.
Chicken in the bread pin pickin' out dough.
