*sigh* If this state really wants to cut into the deficit then perhaps they should look at instituting a state income tax. Then when people start taking up the hue and cry against it, tell them that what they pay the state is deductible from their federal income tax, and all that money goes to fix things around here. Funny, we don't have a state income tax and we aren't hurting much down here. Maybe they should, I don't know, elect people who only spend what they have?

Well, there's that too, but state income tax would make a much bigger dent than a candy tax.

Maybe they should institute a heroin tax. Seattle would pay off the debt in a week...

As much as I hate to disagree, a progressive income tax would probably hurt the state of Washington more than help it right now. Take a look at California. It has a steep, progressive income tax rate, yet when the economy took a plunge, it was one of the worst hit by the recession. The reason is because income typically drops much more than spending during a recession. So a sales tax increase is probably the best thing for generating income right now.
