Holidays past...

Must be a day ending in 'y', as here I am with another thought provoking post. This one just in time for the holidays.

In passing through my days, here in the beautiful state of California and the dual-seasoned SF Bay Area, it made me think. I grew up in south-central Pennsylvania, and it would be difficult for me to be further from there right now.

Back East, feet of snow and airport closures. Here, it's not even RAINING and I'm walking about in a short sleeved shirt more often than not. But moreover, the weather made me think about holidays past.

Growing up, I led a pretty sheltered and very rural life. Some winters found us completely cut off as we literally couldn't open a first-floor door to get out due to the snow. I lived with my maternal grandmother (my mother's adopted mother, specifically) and my mother. My grandmother was ... different and my mother suffered pretty severely from manic-depression. Yet during this time of year, we were family. I still remember when I was 6 and got my first My Little Pony toy, thus starting a love of small pastel plastic ponies that lasts from that day to this. I remember making pies, doughnuts and massive feasts around a table that could seat at least 12. I remember being allowed some glug (though I might be spelling that wrong, it's allegedly a Swedish seasonal alcohol) and sometimes wine. I remember the pine trees almost bending over under the weight of snow. Icecicles forming on the awnings and gutters of the house.

These are the things that I most remember about holidays when I was little.

What are some of yours?
