I submitted something inspired by a in game joke.
Careful friend, that reference isn't that hard to recognize. Once you know the reference, a judge might connect you with the entry itself and become irritated.
Or maybe not..
I wouldn't flirt with the anonymity rules though. A clue just begs to be figured out.

I and I would have gotten away with it if not for you meddling kids.

Hello I'm also one of Wicht's sons, and I also just entered the contest.
I've entered a wonderous item. My dad helped... a little.
Ya hear that Nerrat?! Other Paizonians' kids have already got their items in!! Now, stop doing your homework and finish up with your wondrous item!!

January 2008- 'Oh, hey, haven't checked out the Paizo site in a while, wonder what new stuff is coming out... huh? They're running a contest! Cool! Crap, it's half over, too late to enter. Well, fun to follow along, that's nice at least. Ok, definitely make a mental note to be on the ball and make sure to keep my eye open next winter. Oh, I have the greatest idea for a wondrous item too..."
January 2009- 'Wow, busy damn fall that was. Why do I have the feeling I forgot something? :::pause::: AAAARGH! Maybe It hasn't started yet, let me check the site... NOOOO! Sigh. Well, I can follow along again and judge the item I made last year against these submissions... wow. Wow. My item was bad, so so bad.... Just as well, then. Fortunately I have a new idea I'll put together as a creative exercise for now and be ready enxt year...
December 2009- 'Wow, busy fall again, but at least I've been remembering to check the site every few weeks and the last time I looked at the messageboard before thanksgiving it still hadn't been anounced... AAAARGH! It started a WEEK AGO! Oh, wait, submissions are still being accepted. Okay, let me break out that magic item and do some pathfinderizing of it. Oh, wow, did I ever actually think this was good? Was I NUTS? Okay, new ideas, revising time... hmmm"
Today- 'Thanks for entering RPG Superstar—good luck!'

Nerrat's entry last year (which I mentioned to my boys) was the impetus for them wanting to enter this year.

Oh no. There isn't any way to really relate it. I didn't mention the actual joke that stemmed the item. Now if I told the joke it would be really easy to relate it.

I entered mine early for 3 main reasons:
1: with the holidays and all the family "crap" that that entails, i didn't want to forget it in all the commotion.
2: i wanted to submit it b4 i chickened out again like i did last year.
and 3: now that it's already submitted i can start fine-tuning my ideas for whatever the next round holds. (if they ask for a prc, a villian, a dozen new feats, a fully fleshed out metropolis to rival the size of waterdeep, or whatever...i've got ideas already in motion).

I'm rather envious.
I can't wait until my girls are old (and focused) enough to start learning the PFRPG rules.
Good luck to all the young designers out there!

That really is so utterly awesome. When I was a pre-adolescent D&D player, I would have gladly jumped at the chance to enter a contest like this, I think (in my sixth grade yearbook, under the 'what i want to be when I grow up' section, I'm pretty sure I put down something about wanting to move to Lake Geneva and write for TSR). But if I'd been that young, entered this contest, and had my dad actively supporting and encouraging me? (Not to mention entering it himself as well...) That would have been incredible. Kudos to everyone that uses RPGs to bond with their children.

As of your post, yes. However, my post was made on Saturday, making "next week," this week. Relax, I already made the mistake of missing the deadline last year (transposed a due date for a paper with the deadline for RPG Superstar). I'll have it in well before the deadline, just want to be sure of it, that's all.

I submitted mine as well. Very excited about it! I'd like to make it to the top 32 for no other reason than to read what the judge's thoughts were on my item.
It was fun and educational. And even if I don't make it, I have 2 or 3 cool new wondrous items that will definitely find their way into my campaigns.
I bet it will be tough to make it to the top 32 this year. I foresee this year a having record amount of submissions. I think the amount of people following Pathfinder has at least doubled this year with the release of the Core Rulebook.
Good luck everyone!

Count me among that swell, yeah... and I'm a little concerned that, if I do advance, my relative lack of setting knowledge might eventually prove my unmaking. But horse first, then cart. :)

That is generally how my PF Society entries go. *grin*I know it is inaccurate, but if anyone one is counting.
pg1 has 12, pg2 has 8, and pg3 has 16 for a total of 36 submissions so far. I figure 1 in 5 entries will actually post that they entered.

180 submissions, by your estimate? I think it's more than that, or if not, that there will be a big rush in the final 24 hours... I was under the impression that in previous years there were at least two or three times that many!

2 years ago they mentioned about 830-850 entries, I forget the exact number. I'm assuming that last year had more than that, and that this year will have significantly more, due to Pathfinder RPG being released and lots more people on the boards, email lists, etc.
| Jerett Schaufele Marathon Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9 |
Out of curiosity, last week I counted how many different people have posted on the RPG 2010 forums. At that time, there were around 140 and I never even finished my count. I think it is safe to assume that each one of those will make a submission. Based on that count, maybe there will be 225-300 unique posters by the deadline.
If you assume that only 1 in 3 contestants actually post to the boards, this means you could expect maybe 675-900 submissions which are in line with what came in the first year. My guess would be closer to 850 for this year.
If that is right, and assuming the judges take some time off for the holidays, that would mean that they are looking at around 25 entries a day.
I don't know if that is right, but I'm pretty sure that I am slowly losing my sanity while we wait.

Entries do not generally have to be setting specific. Granted the final published adventure will be in Golarion, but its a big world and just about any idea can find a home in it somewhere.

Just clicked "submit".
I have a confession to make, I didn't even know about this contest until a week ago, when a co-worker mentioned he was going to submit, and the discussion about the item he was designing got my creative juices a-flowin'.
Whoo!
What a funny coincidence. I was just telling a coworker about the contest last week, and got his feedback on my item, and then he got all interested in submitting...
...oh, wait.
Hi, there!

Man, every time I check in on these threads I get more amped about the contest! The excitement is so thick you can cut it with a vorpal blade! (Oh, wait, that's not too tough actually, is it?)
I (finally) came up with an item. I'm still in the 'sitting on it to make sure I don't come up with something else at the last minute' phase. But I plan to submit it by Christmas eve(day). I plan on being too busy after that to be near the PC! ;)
Thanks to Neil and all others who have gone to the effort to make sure that we don't make (too many) easily avoidable mistakes! You guys are great!
Good luck to all who have and will enter! I hope to see you on the other side of the Top 32 circle!
And Merry Christmas to all!

Well, a hello to all from me: it's my first post in the Pathfinder MSB. I just submitted my entry so we'll see what's what... Over 15 years of gaming and around 10 of DMing, there came to be stacks upon stacks of new items (mainly for AD&D) and yet, not one fit the bill for the contest, so it was back to the drawing board after a 2-year game abstinence. Rather fun actually... Good luck everyone!

I put my submission in a few nights ago...
Now I'm pacing the floor, second guessing myself...
This is worse than when I was a kid waiting for Christmas, trying to determine if I had been good enough to make Santas' 'Good' list or if burying my neice in the backyard up to her neck was over the top...
