Crossbow sniper?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I am looking to build a shooty/sniper lvl 10 fighter type using a crossbow for an upcoming game. Its been a while since I have played so I'm looking for some help coming up with feat and skill progression.

thanks in advance.

Hmmm, while I can't really be that helpful for suggesting feats. Which "Splat books" do you have? The "Complete Equipment Guide" has some interesting things that can be added to x-bows and bows.

Just a friendly/helpful suggestion. :)

Cheers!

Rapid Reload is a must for almost any crossbow build.

Look at the Ranger's Archery combat style for a lot of good feat options.

Obviously weapon focus/weapon spec.

Deadly Aim, the ranged character's Power Attack.

Vital Strike and it's tree. This increases the damage from a single attack. Given the reload time from a heavy crossbow limits you to a single attack, using VS can give you a big damage boost.

You might want to consider going for Ranger rather than Fighter. Not only do you get some of the feats as bonuses, but you get Stealth and Perception as class skills. Both are useful for a sniper.

I have access to most of the wotc 3e and 3.5 books.

I didn't think about ranger that's a good option. where can I find vital strike? Is there a srd that has all the feats listed? Sorry for all the dumb questions I'm just getting back to playing after many years.

My answer is based off this being in the Pathfinder section, so they're all Pathfinder Core feats. If you don't have the core rulebook or the incredibly inexpensive PDF, the official Pathfinder Reference Document is here. There are several fan-created versions as well.

the DM is using PF rules but allowing 3.5 rules as well. I don't know how well this will work, as I have never played PF.

It should work fine. PF is mostly compatible with 3.5.

any good suggestions for a cool or unique magic crossbow?

Try Crossbow Mastery (located in the CotCT Player's Guide and Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting). It reduces the loading time of any crossbow to a free action.

Weapon Specialization is good for a +2 to damage.

I'm always a fan of a "Quickloading" crossbow. It gives you a huge extradimentional "magazine" as it were to put ammo into that you can choose from and allows you to reload quickly.

My favorite sniping crossbow though... has to be a Great Crossbow with Gnomish Sights from A&E Guide. Toss on distance enhancements for truly long range sniping. Being able to fire away at 3 range increments with no penalties.

The great crossbow is the 50 cal. of the crossbow world.

that sounds great thanks!

If you have access to the 3.5 Player's Handbook 2, the Crossbow Sniper feat allows you to do 1/2 your dexterity bonus in damage when using a crossbow, so if you have a high dex character, this might not be a bad idea.

where would I find that?

Edit: sorry is quote from Lokie

Well, for something completely over the top. You buy a Master Worked 'over sized' heavy X-Bow. Effectively a small siege weapon. There's the Iron Kingdoms game where they have 'Fold Down Bi-pod' to reduce the penalty for firing the larger weapon prone.

Then there's the "Seven Seas" Role Playing game where they have "Superior Bolts" for 10 Gp each that do horrendous things, like increase the range increment by 25%, 80 Ft becomes 100 ft/ 120 Ft becomes something like 150 Ft. Increase the Crit multiplier by one, so x2 goes to x3. Increase the damage dice by one. So 2D8 goes to 2D10. (Over sized X-Bow does stupid damage and with these bolts stupid gets insane)

Going back to Iron Kingdoms, they have a weapon quality called "Cleft" which lowers the Crit Range Threshold by one. So 17-20.

The Gnomeish X=Bow sight (From "The Complete Equipment Guide") changes the range increment penalties for the better. I think no penalties for the first range Inc. -2 for the next and another -2 for the third. So if your x-bow has a range increment of, say 120 Ft, that's a long way right there with only a -2 to hit.

Then there are the "Gnomish Steam Bow" additions that can be added on for something like 6000 Gp each. Don't have the exact benefits handy. But there's a 'mechanikal' re-loading mechanism for one of lots of 6000.

Pretty much the things Lokie is talking about. :) "Arms and Equipment guide" A useful 'Splat book'.

Adding all of the items into one weapon creates a truly munchkin item. *^_^*

Again, just some ideas.

Quickloading can be found in the Magic Item Compendium.

I'll agree it could get a little munchkin-y, but if a player really wants the build, I'd allow some splat-book feats and such just to see what we end up with.

It would be incredibly fun! Pew-pew-pew! XD

Cool concept!

And, yeah, a few levels of ranger would give it some stealth and perception as class skills. Good stuff for a sniper.

My personal preference for a Sniper PrC would be Cragtop Archer from Races of Stone.

Get up high and fire as far or farther than you can see.

Crossbows are ok, but if you wanna be like Crow.. you gotta use the bow.

That was cool. I dunno, though, that crossbow was pretty wicked.

I've thought of doing this myself in 3.5. I found a Crossbow style for rangers in Quintessenital Ranger II which helps when doing it as a ranger.

Crossbow Style (Specific):

Most rangers choose to use the longbow because it can
be fired rapidly in combat and because its simple design
helps protect it from the ravages of the wilderness. You,
however, prefer the crossbow for its precision accuracy and
killing power.
2nd level: You are treated as having the Rapid Reload feat.
6th level: You are treated as having the Precise Shot feat,
even if you do not meet the normal prerequisites.
11th level: You are treated as having the Sniper’s Eye feat,
even if you do not meet the normal prerequisites.

There is a feat called Crossbow mastery in one of the paizo books as well that can effecitly bring doing reloding a cross bow to use your full attack progression.

You may want to consider distance and seeking as magic enhancements for your crossbow.

A feat to consider is Far Shot, along with Crossbow Mastery.
