Interactive Short Fiction Workshop

PaizoCon General Discussion

The Exchange

I am wondering what is meant when one says, "by June 1st." I forget. Does that mean it must be done before June 1st or no later than June 1st.

Heheh.

I'm assuming it means we have to have our submission to Sutter by the end of June 1st. I'm hoping I can pull something together for it. I'm not sure how I landed in the "Interactive Short Fiction" workshop...as I don't remember rating it higher than a "0"...but I'm not about to look a gift-horse in the mouth either. So, I'll see you there, I guess. :-)

The Exchange

Wow, cya there!

The Exchange

Only 6 hours left to make the deadline. Shesh!

The Exchange

I have submitted it. Maybe it will be just you an I Mr. Spicer. Unwittingly volunteered.

I didn't have enough time to put together anything polished. So I just went with some fan fiction drawn off a PbP character of mine going through Rise of the Runelords. It should serve as a decent discussion piece, I hope. Seems odd that the workshop hasn't filled up yet. I thought more people would have an interest in writing fiction for Paizo someday. And this seems like a good starting point to at least improve your writing while also interacting with Mr. Sutter and company...

I submitted a journal like story about a Pathfinder. I looked an there are only six people signed up for this. I figured that it would be full, I guess some people just don't like any form of criticism.

Or they didn't have the time to put something together in just a few days. I would have loved to do it, but didn't have anything to submit nor the time to whip something up.

Yeah my wife and I were buddies and we both got in to this but when she found out she had about two day to whip out a 3000 word story she decided to do a PFS game instead.

The Exchange

I went off the trail and wrote a silly sensitive man piece.

I wrote stuff. :P

Are you bringing cookies to the 3-hour workshop, though? :-D

Please?

Pretty please?

With powdered sugar on top?

Are you requesting powdered sugar on the "please" or on the cookies? Please clarify or Sutter will critique you for being ambiguous.

Hey folks! Just now saw this thread.

It's unfortunate that there wasn't more lead time for the workshop (coding all the event-scheduling stuff took longer than anticipated), but I actually wasn't expecting folks to write NEW material. I just wanted to give people a chance to workshop that story they already had lying around in a drawer somewhere.

Anyhow, should be a good time, and I look forward to seeing you all there!

(P.S: To those few folks who're signed up but haven't sent in stories yet - I need those by Thursday at the latest, or they won't go out to the other workshoppers!)

The Exchange

I thought about using some of my older stuff, but that wouldn't help my current problems. Writers lose some of their old perspectives, and even enlightened ideas. You have to work with what you have. Being just newly turned 40, I got new issues in my writing that I want scrutinized. So, to give you something current will do a lot more for me than handing something over that I did at 30.

I have really tried to keep my perspective as a 16 year old, but it get's pretty hard pretending to fit in with my age bracket.

Thanks for coming to this thread James! I have found that cohesion will be more productive. I surrender this thread for details and plans for the workshop.

Wow, there never told me you could read minds. You must have a beer! Cloud your abilities.

On a side note, can we bring beer to the workshop? And will there be regular poddy breaks? Heheh!

If I could read minds, I certainly wouldn't cloud that ability with a beer. Cookies, on the other hand... ;-P

The Exchange

Still wondering about the beer in the workshop.

Is he serious?

Josh had said somewhere else that no alcohol consumption is permitted by the hotel in conference or ballrooms. I assume that would include whichever room in which this and other workshops are taking place.

The Exchange

That must be a Paizo thing, because I talked with the hotel :) You are not allowed to distribute alcohol in those areas.

Holy smurf! You mean there are creative people out there that actually *finish* things?

I don't know how many unfinished drafts I have laying around. Lately I've taken to writing in screenplay format, much faster since you only write what the audience sees.

Curses! Why could this not have stayed in April when I could make it?

Oh well time to plan for tomorrow night Pinky.

Let me guess, you wrote "The Inheritor" Lilith? That was the only piece that didn't have a name.

That would be me, yes.

My wife wishes to say to you directly. She is a fan of your writing for life! And she says that while holding your paper to her heart like giving it a hug.

Aww! Dank yew! :D

I was impressed by all the story ideas. No shortage of imagination, here!

It'll be great to learn more about what publishers want, formatting, and all that other stuff. Looking forward to a stimulating and informative session.

I'm just doing "mental hand-wringing" over having to go with a writeup from our Rise of the Runelords PbP game. I stirred up a lot of dust searching for some older fiction I could trot out for such a workshop, but nothing appealed to me. And there wasn't really enough time to do up a decent shortstory given my current writing projects. So, apologies if mine's not a self-contained shortstory, but hopefully we can still discuss characterization and such anyway.

The Exchange

Well, as you say, you never look a gift horse in the mouth. I guess I really didn't have the time to write a Short Story on the fly either, especially given my time constraints right at this moment. I leave for PaizoCon in 3 and a 1/2 hours. I still have two more edits to do, two characters to write out and a car to pack. Not going to happen today. Tomorrow I will be in Seattle!

The Exchange

Just wanted to thank everyone for coming. I really enjoyed the workshop. I will post it in the month ahead. Summer is a busy time for me. Brewing Ales, Editing, Writing, Video Editing, Trip to Minnesota, Guests, Family.

How not to live by Ted Thompson

Contributor, RPG Superstar 2009, RPG Superstar Judgernaut

It sounds much more like "A Life Well Lived" by Ted Thompson. My personal philosophy is that "Life is Good. Always." So enjoy it. Try to match it. And give thanks along the way.

And thanks for your spot-on editorial remarks on my admittedly rushed piece for the workshop...
