Going to be in Austin

Off-Topic Discussions

Hey all,

I am going to be in Austin in November for a conference. Was hoping to get some suggestions of cool/interesting things to see, places to go. I won't have a mountain of time, but if I could get some cool ideas, I may be able to plan accordingly.

Thanks!

Larry

Hoes on fifth and main?

Um...isnt there a Museum to telecommunications in Austin? Or am I Thinking something else? Look for the Memorial of that Austin guy who the cty was named after. Or you could do a Photo Tour of the Oldest graveyard in the City.

Explore Mainstreet and Take a Poster style Vertical photo of the view - watercolour it in photoshop and and have it turned into a 2mx4m poster.

Larry-

Well, Austin in general, and 6th Street in particular are famous for the live music scene. Since you will be at a conference, I'm assuming that you will be having more evenings off than days... You should go and check out www.austinchronicle.com to see if there are any entertainment offerings that you would like to see. Stubb's Backyard is a good venue, but just one of many.

The State Capitol is a neat building with some nice tours. There is the Bob Bullock Texas State Museum, which is a great little museum. The Statue of Stevie Ray Vaughn nice to visit, especially if you are a deciple of Texas Blues/Honkeytonk. It will be too late in the year for you to see the bats under the Congress Ave. Bridge, unfortunately.

Austin is a fun and funky little town. It's easy to pass time. Where are you going to be staying? The Driscol?

I can give you tons of suggestions, but since Austin is a very eclectic town, knowing what kind of stuff you are interested in will go a long way. The city has everything to offer from excellent restaurants and bars to wonderfully quiet hiking and canoeing. All within ten to fifteen minutes of each other.

If you are coming for a conference, will it be at the main convention center? If that’s the case, you’ll be smack dab in the middle of downtown. Do you know where you will be staying?

Hit me back with some of your interests (are we talking five star restaurants or beer-swilling punk clubs?)and I will give you a list of things and linkies to look stuff up before your trip.

Main Street???

Yeah, I think between Daigle, Court Fool, Myself and a few others, suggestions for things to do in Austin will be quite easy to come by.

Just gotta tell us what you're in to!

Daigle:

Spoiler:
Just make sure he understands, if he's into that kind of stuff, the Emo's there isn't the original, and isn't half as cool as the (RIP) original.

Emo's here is pretty much living up to the current pop culture rendition of its name. There are far better places than that here in town.

Yeah, I know, but it was a sore spot for me back in the early '90s having to tell the Austin kids Houston's Emos was mostly poser free...

I was at a show at the Continental Club and got stepped on by Kinky Friedman!

I will be flying in the Wednesday and leaving SUnday morning. The only night I for sure have to myself is the Saturday, as the conference ends Saturday afternoon.

I will be staying at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort...how close is that to downtown?

As to interests, I am obviously a gaming fan, so if there are any cool FLGSs to check out, that would be cool.

I loooove bbq, so any recommendations in that area would be most appreciated.

What about the Museum of Pop Culture...anyone been there?

The Lost Pines is actually a fair way outside of town. It's in the town of Bastrop which is about 20 miles east of the Airport, which in turn is on the southeast side of Austin. Here is a map...zoom out about half way:

Here is the location of the Museum of Pop Culture (I've not been there, but it looks fun):

For Barbeque, there are lots of good choices, but Lambert's is pretty good and I've heard great things about Salt Lick BBQ over in Driftwood.

Lost Pines is really nice. I've done some cabling work out there before, but, as Gav noted, it is not in Austin and is a decent trek away from excitement.

And, as far as barbeque goes, I got nothin'. I have heard good things about the places Gav mentioned, however.
