Geocities is Shutting Down

This is bad news for a lot of guys like me that have been using it to host their gaming sites for a number of years.

There are alternatives.

I don't have any recommendations though.

Nothing is mentioned in the help page. At first I thought it was a money thing, but they are shutting down the paying accounts as well. The only thing I can figure is that they are hoping to drive customers to their Yahoo! Web Hosting service.

There is that.

Also GeoCities doesn't exactly have good name recognition any more. Not quite as bad as Anglefire... But pretty close.

But more likely, I think, is that webhosting technology is growing. I'd wager that the GeoCities framework is outdated, and on outdated hardware. Much like how people get a new OS on a new computer, I think they saw little appeal to carrying the framework over to new hardware.

But I am just guessing.
