I think Hitchcock had the right idea: birds are pretty damn terrifying.

When I went to college, I lived in a dorm which had a tree right outside the main entrance. A robin nested there, and, every spring, it would swoop down at everyone who entered and left the dorm. I don't think it ever drew blood, but it was pretty eerie.
