Armoured Skirt, uh, I mean, Kilt questions

The Kilt can either be used as its own armour or improve a light or medium armour. So far so good, but some things might need clarification:

  • If have a +3 armoured kilt, you can wear it as an armour granting you a +4 bonus, but what if I wear that on top of my chain shirt? Will it improve my other armour's bonus by 4? Or only by 1? Or might its enhancement bonus overlap with the other armour's enhancement bonus, so a regular chain shirt and a +3 kilt will grant you +8 (+4 shirt, +1 kilt, +3 enhancement), but a +2 chain shirt with a +3 kilt is still only +8 (+4 shirt, +1 kilt, +3 enhancement)?

What about a +5 chain shirt and a +1 heavy fortification kilt?

I assume that all the kilt can do when added to armour is increase by one, not grant any extra abilities.

  • Mithral Field Plate is considered medium armour. Does that mean that you can get an additional +1 by adding a kilt and turning it into heavy again?

My assumption for this is that no, that doesn't work.

  • I have another question: Why does a 10lb piece of armor add 15lbs to the weight of the outfit it's worn with?

Extra straps and such to combine the two?

Five pounds of straps? And wouldn't you already need those straps to hold the kilt on whether you're wearing additional armor or not?

Armoured Kilt? where is this? and more importantly...Why is it?

It's listed in the equipment chapter of the Pathfinder hardcover Campaign SettingPathfinder Campaign Setting, and it's basically a kilt with iron rods and lether pags offering protection for those societies that normally thumb their nose at full armor.

I honestly think the kilt and other armor accessories are a great idea, but the rules attatched tend to bog them down. The kilt alone is essentially Leather Armor, which is cool, but attaching it to medium armor automatically makes the armor heavy, while there are heavy armors that would give better protection. Story-wise, the item is great, but I can give one to my fighter by describing her Plate Mail or Half Plate as having one and generally have nicer armor.

But like I said, I love the idea of Fighters being able to augment their protection without needing to turn to magic. Maybe a good compromise would be some sort of "Armor Accessory Training" feat, that allows a character to equip things like the Armored Kilt on top of their armor without (too many penalties). Sort of like how shields work. If we limit how cool the accessories can be (say, no more than a +2 AC bonus), but also say they can provide other bonuses (maybe bumps to Intimidate or weapon damage), you can open up a whole new categorey of mundane equipment AND help heavy fighters hold up against tough monsters AC-wise at higher levels.

They're from the Campaign Setting, and I quite like them.

You can use them either on their own as armour or add them to existing armour.

On their own, they have a minor bonus but a high max dex, no armour penalty and no arcane failure, so they work for spellcasters (and I personally would let them work for monks).

As an accesory to other armour, they increase the armour while decreasing max dex and turn them into heavier armour (light to medium, medium to heavy - you can't use them with heavy armour).

I think it's more about encumberance than actual weight. Adding another layer of hip-groin protection over the one you already have will probably cramp your walking style.

Which is well-represented by the fact that it reduces the armor's maximum Dex bonus and increases it's weight categorey.
