Hey. This is an invitation to anyone who would like to join a Greyhawk campaign I started awhile back. It picks up where the SCAP left off, but the PCs lost (TPK). A gate to Carceri is open over the ruins of Cauldron and the Cagewrights have yet to free Adimarchus. The demons of the Demonscar are organized under minions of Yeenoghu and looking for territory, while a corrupt druid and fallen angel try to expand a blighted area of jungle to cover everything in the Amedio. Add to that a small but powerful kingdom of undead in Stoneharrow and you have a great deal of impending doom on your schedule! But all is not lost. A family of Silver Dragons is amalgamating the scattered fiefs on the edge of the Hold of the Sea Princes into a coalition called the Silver Scale Protectorate to stop undead, demon, gnoll, and Carcerian incursions north. In addition, jungle druids, treants, fey and the remaining free tribes have gathered in an alliance to fight off the blight of their forest. Borders shift constantly, battles are lost and won, and heroes are in dire need.
any takers?
P.S. This post was first in the Play by post section.

(LOL!) I would, but I'm booked to the max with pbp action.
It just sounds cool....I got some guys running around Keoland right next door; Orcus is on the loose there....just finished U1 Secrets of Saltmarsh and I'm running with U2 and U3's general plotlines, though egregiously modified...U2 was a 50 room gigantic dungeon crawl, which doesn't sit with me as too condusive for the pbp medium.
Poor Greyhawk has demon problems out the wazoo. ;)
Patrick Murphy
right. Still some others I have talked to through other media who may join so we can take our time setting things up. Hopefully, I can have a definate roster within a week (5 max), so we can start. 3rd level characters are what I am looking for. That gives lots of time for growth/death/mutilation/undeath etc.
ghettowedge
I'm interested, but I have a few concerns. First off, my knowledge of Greyhawk is little to none. Would that be an issue? Second and bigger (for me), I'm looking for a pbp that will exploit the tactical aspects of the game. Are you planning on using battle maps and the like, or is this going to take a more narrative approach?
Patrick Murphy
Thanks for writing! Frist off, I like players that don't have alot of background knowledge of the setting (cuts down on metagaming actively and passively). So no, that is not a problem. Second, I have always like story and pbp lends itself heavily to narrative style of play. That said, I LOVE combat and would like to include a lot ( unless it become extremely repetitive (i.e. video rpgs). But kinks can be worked out on that accord by our group ( time will tell). I am not a big fan of crunching the system to develop huge attack routines/buffs and the like, but that is just my style of play. I have found that certain strategies lend themselves to metagaming ( i.e. how would a fighter know to use X or have magic spell Y, etc). Still, if such strategies could be roleplayed, then why not use them?
I hope that helps and you will join my little tea party here.

I've got a Dwarven Cleric that I could level up to 3rd level, just looking for a home. I would just need to know the specifics; Stat generation, allowed source books, Hit Points, starting funds/equipment, any house rules, how dice rolls are resolved, and I could get to it. Is this Pathfinder Beta, or standard 3.5. Let me know if I'm in, and I'll get things rolling.

I'm just getting back into the whole PBP thing (I was a regular on the Paizo PBP forums a while ago).
I'd be interested in joining, I'd just need (as someone above mentioned) the creation rules - level, stats, money, availabke sources, that sort of thing.
It looks like you've got interest from a Cleric and a Paladin so far (which takes care of all that messy divinity stuff [Jokes!]). I'd be interested in playing some sort of Arcane spellcaster, ie. a Sorcerer or Wizard.
Anywho, get back to us on the requirements, and we'll go from there.
Patrick Murphy
ok. Players as I see it are Scarnford (Dwarven Cleric), Ghettowedge (rogue) Larcifer (unknown), Wellard (paladin), PsionicFox (spellcaster). Third level is fine and helps ease you into the backstory (let me know if you would like me to set that up for you). When we start we should change the thread I would think. About creation, several games here use the point system and that is fine if you wish, physical rolls are also fine with me ( I trust you) or using the online dice roller (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm). No min/maxers or munchins please.
Gear is anything that suits your character but no magic weapons/armor to start. Keep magical gear to potions, scrolls, or minor magic at first please. Masterworks are fine.
Basically I am used to having characters make up what they feel like playing (within reason) and working it into the campaign. Sometimes that means I write them into the story, other times they have good ideas themselves. Everyone should have some type of connection to someone somewhere (i.e. family) unless it makes sense for that character to be alone in the world. Likewise, unless the character is truly dark(CE)or disgusting (CHA 3), you are bound to have friends. Don't list them ( unless it makes sense for your character) but assume you have some good friends and a host of acquaintences. Contacts as they are dealt with in the DMG2 are a different matter.
In terms of availiable classes, I have alot of books. So if you have a class/race you want to play and it can be worked in, let me know where it is, and if I have it, we will see if it can be done. For example, I had a warforged in this campaign before under the idea that it was in suspended animation from a Suel fortress lost during the Time of Colorless Fire. For those not in the know, that was an epic spell worked by their enemies the Baklunish Empire; think Noah's Ark with fire coming down instead of rain. It created the Sea of Dust with is to the south of our initial campaign area across the Hellfurnaces.
More on the Geography later...
In terms of location, we will start in Sasserine, which is a mustering area for the Silver Protectorate (as the realm of the Dragons is called).
Please keep the question coming. When everyone is satisfied we can start.
Patrick Murphy
Also, I have read the Alpha version of Pathfinder but I am not comfortable with it yet, so 3.5 rules with some tweaks will have to suffice. I have some house rules I like to use and some new editions I would like to try out, but maybe not at this time. I will post my house rules as a thread entry later on for your edification.
BTW. Love the Dwarven cleric idea. I have a soft spot for dwarves. That said, rogues, Paladin, spellcasters are all good, and I can't wait to meet your characters.

How many points?

How much gold should we start with? Page 135 of the DMG says 3,700 gp, is that ok? And seeing as you are opposed to magic armors, how do you feel about mithral shirts?

I'm good. I have a new job, which is nice. my body has healed pretty well from my accident, which is awesome. And yeah, I miss her too.
Kinda hard to bring her back into the fold now though :P.
(And yes, we'll stop hijacking your thread Pat. Sorry!)

Hey, PsionicFox. Nice to see you around again!
No. But other than a mate of mine I am trying to get in on this, you shall be the last person my friend.

Points; heroic without being epic. I think 25. I prefer other methods so I defer to you folks who are fans of the point system. General rule is two above average scores and one below average. Gold; spend it! Mithral is fine, but please remember I like story, so all 3700 does not have to be spent on gear! Play with it. Was there a spouse, family to support, mode of transport, tithe to a church; good food, wine or company? I give experience for things like that. For example, in my world, mithral doesn't just hang out at the local weapons shop ( too prized). It ought to have been a gift, prize, or made for you for some special reason, etc.
As soon as you can let me know the stats/ back story of your character so that I may more fully include them into the campaign.
house rules will be posted this weekend as part of the first entry the the Rotting War Campaign thread in the PBP section.
Also note. I am a teacher with a very full schedule this fall ( many new courses as opposed to many new students). So if I fall a little behind in my postings, please be patient. I will try to post at least once a day to keep things moving. Of course that will be much easier if everyone else is able to do the same :).

I live a little over an hour North of Sydney, Australia.
Question: How would you feel about a Killoren (Races of the Wild) with class levels like so: Druid 1/Wizard 2? If that is acceptable, I will be guiding the character towards the Arcane Heirophant Prestige Class.
I'm not sure why, but I was paging through my books last night, and I noticed that race there, where I had never seen it before.
ghettowedge
I've got a little hiccup for you. It's pretty much my bedtime now (work comes early), I got work tomorrow, and then I run straight to my weekly f2f game. That means the earliest I could post a character is Thursday evening. If this is a problem, my feelings won't be hurt. Otherwise, I'll have it Thursday.
And I'm posting from Massachusetts in the U.S.

No. But other than a mate of mine I am trying to get in on this, you shall be the last person my friend.
Awesome.
In my usual way, I'd like to play something odd and suboptimal. How would you feel about multi-classing cleric-monk? LG cleric of Pelor of somewhat martial attitude. The monk abilities fall out of intensive prayer and mediatative exercises.
Alternatively I have a really suboptimized ranger that I had rolled up for a Shackled City campaign that died aborning. Very young, naive enthusiastic sort of guy. In melee, he used a short spear like it was a pointy quarterstaff and was going to use 2-weapon fighting with it. He was going to spend most of his feats on ranged combat though. Figured he'd probably take some fighter levels just to help out with combat.
Or I can fill any holes in the party, although it looks like most of the roles are filled.
Oh,yeah. I'm in Massachusetts, north of Boston.

Ghettowedge. It's a little out of (game) date , but there are PDFs of AD&D Greyhawk source material available on Paizo, really cheap. Great for the Greyhawk atmosphere if not actual facts. Facts may not be important since our esteemed DM has a pretty cataclysmic event as a starting point.

He sounds familiar... Kind of like the companion of a certain Grey Elf Wizard...

No problem. There are killoren in the Amedio Alliance. You will be one of the few survivors of a company that moved north to link up with regulars of the Silver Protectorate in the Hold of the Sea Princes.
Patrick Murphy
I dont think 25 points are going to give us survivable characters but I'll do my best to build on that. Which means that the character has to be totally reworked and won't be posted till tomorrow
and I'm in Inverness Scotland.
and its 2,700 gold at 3rd level in my DMG
As I said, I am not a big user of the point buy system but I know many like it. Tell me, what level of points are reasonable without having characters with 15+ across the board?
Page 135 of the DMG does indeed say 2700 gp at 3rd level. ( thanks)

Read whatever backgroun info on Greyhawk you like, but please remember what you know is not necessarily what your character will know and role-play it accordingly.
when we get started (next week?) I will give you the particulars of my Greyhawk campaign world which I hope puts things into perspective.
In terms of being 'esteemed', I am sure some ( if not all) of you know more about the game than I do but thanks for the playful respect just the same.

I'll try the cleric-monk then. Usually Wed. is a good night for me to post, but my wife is singing in a bar so I'll be busy. I'll try to get the character set up by Thursday night.
PsiFox, yes it is young Nik Wright. By the way, Stilgar found a second life in another PbP. He started out as a slave, but the party busted him loose pretty quick. I hven't checked that thread in a long time.
Thale Nyus
Hi, All.
Here's Thale Nyus. Patrick, just to doublecheck.. It is OK to advance him as a straightup multiclass ignoring the monk exclusive class rule?
I've still got to write up his gear, description and background, but its late. Time for bed.
Well as long as I'm talking background: Thale hails from a remote monastery dedicated to Pelor built around a small interdimensional rift. While the nature of the rift precludes it from being closed completely, by focused prayer, spells, and meditation the monks seek to bar passage to malign outsiders that would enter. A more martial band of monks, with which Thale is training, combats the occasional something that does get through. The opening of your rift has set up a kind of interplanar harmonic and more things are slipping through during the crests. The monastery has sent Thale to investigate, to seek aid, and to offer aid to whoever is combating your rift. (I figured the remote location gives me an excuse for my ignorance of the setting geography. On that note can you give me a relative direction and distance that Thale has covered and anything notable he's seen on the way?)
I tried to pick skills to cover his history in the monastery. Is knowledge(arcana) an appropriate choice?
Patrick Murphy
Alright. Answers:
Garret: the potion belt is fine. In fact, any piece of equipment or magic item within reason can be found in Greyhawk. Obviously campaign specific stuff from other worlds would not be there. Also for those not in the know. Greyhawk setting has less outright magic than say Eberron or FR. It is a little more medieval in its makeup, and so less populus or urban than other settings. More backstory later when I get a chance to do a real post.
Thale: straightup is fine. Knowledge Arcana is fine. The details of your monastery I would like to add as it would more closely meld with my campaign. That said, how many people are there? do you have friends? all one race? Some of these questions you could help with if you like.
Sir Basil: thanks for having the character done. I will get to them all ASAP.
BTW I am really excited about this people! I live in an isolated area and playing is soulfood I am starving for. Thanks again.
Patrick Murphy
I'll get started with my basics profile. Should be able to finish shopping and complete specifics onto profile tonight, but if we want to get started this should be enough to get going.
If you can provide me with a start for a background for this priest of Moradin, then I can finish up the details.
You hale from the largest and least isolated of the Mountain Dwarven Clanholds in the Hellfurnaces Chain. The name is Bazentim, ' First Fire Mountain', roughtly translated into the common. The priests of Moradin are well respected here but take a backseat to the war god Clangeddin, and his son, the demigod of fire Atar. Still they are influential and have high standing in political and religious life in Bazentim. Of the Dwarven vitures, Justice and Industry are most sought after by the Moradin priests in this clanhold.
That help? let me know if you need more.
Khaladon
Pat I know you're full-up now, but as I find your story and setting very interesting I'd like to be put on a 'next-up' list or some such if you're willing? I have a Wild Druid (New Class I made up with some help-You can check out Gal or Ali : ) that are now abandoned (well, at least One of them ;-) with some of the other 'faces' I recognize in your new game here. So I'll keep an eye on your Thread and if anything pops up please lemme know. Otherwise I wish you all Great Gaming!
PS Pat I very much understand about PbP being needed soulfood! While I am from Toronto, ON I have been living in Mexico and have little to no chance of finding a f2f game there..well, at least one in English that I could understand! My Spanish is pretty good but I have no idea how to say "I smite the vile undead with my burning Holy Sword of Flame" en Espanol for example ;-) lol hmmm actually maybe I Could work that out? Probably end up in translation sounding like "I take my hot knife of God and hit the bad dead person with it with my great anger!" LMAO
And so sorry for my little Thread Jack here!

Alright Campaign to start posting on Monday (night?) provided I can get my schoolwork done. Players as I see it are the avatars/characters of the following:
Psionic Fox: Druid/Wizard Killoren
Therealtom: ranger ( not sure of the race)
Wellard: Paladin of Pelor Human
Ghettowedge: rogue ( not sure about the race)
Larcifer: unknown ( he will be joining late)
SCranford: Cleric of Moradin Dwarf
sorry if I mispelled anyone's handle.
look for the first installment of the Greyhawk: Rotting War Campaign in the appropriate thread.
See you all there.
