As an actual Green Bay Packer shareholder, I think this ended up the best that it could for the Packers considering what happened. I had really hoped that Brett would stay retired and become a beloved stateman for the Packers and the game, but I should have seen a return coming with all of his flip flopping on retirement over the past 6 seasons or so. Does anybody remember Reggie White playing for Carolina after he retired? How about Joe Montana for KC? I didn't think so. I have the feeling that this might end up like that. At least we will get some form of compensation for our troubles.

Yep. I was very sad when Brett retired - because I thought he had one more year left in him, and I really wanted to see him go out with a Super Bowl win with the Packers. But seeing his retirement press conference, I realized it was time for it to be over. In hindsight, he really did peter out towards the end of the season last year, and I find it hard to believe that it won't happen again this season.
Who knows? Maybe a new team and a really big chip on his shoulder will be exactly what he needed. As long as he's not playing against the Packers, I'll be rooting for him. And I'd love to see him score an upset or three against the Patriots this season.
So now, if Brett wants to be in the Hall of Fame as a Packer, won't they have to hire him back? That could be interesting.
Happens all the time - if the player wants it. A retired player is temorarily put on the roster, and then "retired as a Packer." IIRC, Marco Rivera and Bill Schroeder did it earlier this year.

Let me preface with this - I am, always have been and always will be, a diehard Detroit Lions fan. (NOW do I have your pity?)
Many, many years have I seen Favre destroy my team. He is a rare talent at QB; the bottom line with Favre, he's never afraid to throw the ball.
But for all his success and status, one player is never more important than the team. Favre said he was going to retire, the Packers were ready to move on . . . I think Favre made this way more dramatic than it needed to be, and now he faces the auspicious ending that awaits many great QBs: to play on a team going nowhere instead of retiring with the team, the community, that put them on the map.

Yes. Still, it could be worse: I live in a land of Vikings fans. They have to deal with the annual ritual of starting off as The Next Great Team, then somewhere along the way it inevitably goes in the tank.
Better to just know you're team is lousy, and keep hoping for the best. That's how it was as a Packers fan from 1970 to 1993 or so.

Football is a great game, and I love the off season drama, as it gives the fans hours of entertainment prior to the start of the season.
Yeah, every year there seems to be a big story that gets fans excited about something other than their favorite team. I'll definately be checking in on the Jets and Packers games to see what's going on.
Question is: Who will win more games, Jets or Packers?
My money is on the Jets. Although they only won 4 games, didn't Chad P throw an interception that was returned for a TD in every game? Although Brett has been known to do that too. Depends on what Brett shows up, I guess.
Almost forgot, HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!!!

My take also....they been dealing with this for awhile and in the NFL that translates to less preparation overall = losses
Being in the east I'm experiencing the gush of all the Jet fans....c'mon they were 4 and 12 the best thet can hope for is 8 and and 8 and a wild card....Green Bay didn't get to the NFC championship in Brett alone. They're solid and they can stop people on D
I'm a Rams fan myself and all I can say is the last time the Jets fans were this amped up was for Testaverde's original Jet's debut...and he went out in the first game. The Rams won the Super Bowl that year..so I can only hope History repeats (if f+%&ing Steven Jackson would show up for f#*%ing camp!!)

Actually, if I understand the system correctly, when you are voted into the Hall of Fame, the player gets to decide which team he played on he is inducted as. Reggie White went in as a Packer even though he started his career as an Eagle and ended as a Panther. I have no doubt Brett will be going in as a Packer.

Ha! I laugh at your feeble attempts, for I am a Saints fan, and woe be unto me if ever I hold my breath waiting for them to do get to the Big Game, for I would surely perish.
As for Brett, I think he's being childish. He should have stayed retired, enjoyed his money, and given Aaron Rodgers his blessing.

This is a popular misconception.
From the HOF website:
Is a New Hall of Fame Member Enshrined as a Member of a Team?
Obviously, teams take great pride in the accomplishments of individuals who have been a part of their organization. Often individual teams and even the Hall of Fame will list enshrinees according to the team or teams on which they spent a significant period of time. An enshrinee, however, is not asked to “declare,” nor does the Hall of Fame “choose” a team under which a new member is enshrined. When elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, an individual is recognized for his accomplishments as a player, coach, or contributor.
http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/teams.html
(here you can see they do indicate amount of time a person spent with one team, and Reggie is listed as a major contributor to both the eagles and packers)

Madden '09 comes out Monday with Bret Farve on the cover in a Green Bay jersey.
LMAO!!!///irony
I heard there is going to be a download of Brett in Jets uniform that you can print, cut out, and slide into your case. Now that's funny.
Also, in the game, Brett isn't on any team, he's in the all time greats section. Or whatever it's called this time.

whoops I meant to quote Kohl I read it hours later and had a D'oh! moment.
Mytake also = "I agree with Lisa - Brett's been doing the "I might retire" for the past few seasons so I don't blame the Packers for moving on after Brett says he's going to retire. Hopefully he doesn't go out with a career ending injury over in NY."

It's baseball that does this. They put whatever cap you choose on your plaque. For example Goose Gossage just went in as a Yankee, even though he played for about 8 teams or so.
What is common is a "1-day contract" so the player can retire as a member of their original team. I remember Everett Smith did that so he could retire as a Cowboy.
I suspect the Packers would do the same for Mr. Fav-ray in a couple years once he's bounced around the league a bit after retiring a few more times.

I only wear Saints paraphenalia in the comfort of my own home, or with good friends. If I did that out in public I believe that I'd quickly be attacked by citizens of the "City of Brotherly Love".
I may be a little crazy, but I ain't suicidal.

Exactly Pete. In fact, if I remember correctly, Reggie White got a one day contract so that he could go in as a Packer.

um.... LAME!
I think has been charmed by a Mind Flayer... wth! really!?!?
Wasn't me... ;)
As much as I've been a fan of both GB & Favre over the years, sooner or later you've got to make that hard decision to hang it up & stick with it. To keep riding the fence (or in this case, the revolving door?) isn't fair to the team, the fans, the league, or the sport as a whole, and someone with as much love for the game as Favre is credited with should realize that. As much as I would have liked to see Brett remain on in either a backup or advisory capacity, by leaving the Packers altogether it a) lets Favre find out just how much of his success was due to his own ability and how much was due to having a strong team around him, and b) lets the Packers finally go into their long-delayed but inevitable post-Favre rebuilding process. It's going to to be really interesting to see how this all plays out in the coming season. While having a QB of Brett Favre's caliber could be considered a feather in any team's cap, I just don't see the Jets getting their money's worth this time, as all of Brett's record-setting prime years were with GB & thus in the past now.
The real question for all the Packer Backers out there now is: have you been a Packers fan, or a Favre fan? Now that the two are no longer synonymous, will you be glued to every one of Brett-the-Jet's games now, or are you going to give Aaron Rodgers the support he needs to help rebuild Green Bay into a great team "post-#4?"
Me? I'll probably do both, at least in the short term; Favre's been a fantastic player & I'm sure he still has some gas left in the tank, but it just won't be the same for me if he's not on the frozen tundra surrounded by green & gold...

Rodgers has my support. No disrespect to Favre, but I think that coming out of retirement was a mistake given how grumbly he was at the end of the last season. I can't see his mood getting any better at the end of this next season. And that's a shame. He has far too many stellar accomplishments for the end of his career to be the source of so much strife.

From my perspective, the Jets fans (many Jets fans) were gushing in the preseason how they were going to the superbowl etc and I believe that Testeverde came in later in the previous year-this was his first full season. And they were lambasting my favorite organization for hiring coach Vermeil.
"What's he going to do cry?" was heard repeatedly as I steadfastly stuck by my team (What the hell, we just got Marshall Faulk and Trent Green) Well Green went out in preseason, and the voices got louder.
They were very quiet in January
