Villain Classes?

Races & Classes

I thought a neat idea for the Pathfinder RPG would be special classes for villains. For example, the thaumaturge class that has been featured twice already in Pathfinder would be an interesting addition. I don't know if the publishers of the book that the thaumaturge debuted in would allow it, though.

Oh, an anti-paladin class would be good, too. I thought it strange that there was a "champion of good" base class, but that the "champion of evil" was a prestige class.

According to page 1 of the Book of Fiends, Those sections containing the Thaumaturge, and the Unholy Warrior are open source.

As long as prestige classes for evil characters don't get better stuff than regular prestige classes. Sometimes it seems like designers think they can give all kind of nifty unbalanced abilities and justify that it's O.K. because they won't fall into the hands of the PCs. There's a little bit of this with the Pathfinder RPG necromancer who can make a big army of skeletons & zombies for free.

The Thamuterge, and the Unholy Warrior from the Book of Fiends, are classes.
The Thaumatuge would likely need a little work (mostly on domains) to fit in with Pathfinder.
The Unholy Warrior on the other hand still has an edge on Paladins in some ways(class abilities are determined by domains), and would fit in perfectly.

To tell the truth, I'd rather them not use the thaumaturge exactly as it is. After the necessary domain changes, maybe they could make it so the class' corruptions don't make the thaumaturge so obviously evil, what with the deformities and such. Maybe they could change many of the corruptions so that they give them an unnatural aura of menace instead.

I looked up the Book Of Fiends on Amazon and they wanted at least 80 dollars for it... is it platinum bound or something? I found the idea of the Unholy Warrior class interesting, but geez thats a bit much to spend. Certainly i have something in my outrageously expensive WOTC library that approximates it...

I'd like to see a Over/Warlord class for evil fighters that's about leading massive armies (think Warduke in appearance). Especially if you could work in an ability called "FACE ME!" to force PCs to fight him one on one...or an ability that prevents PCs from attacking until he finishes his soliloquy. An ability where he gets stronger the more he beats on "the good guys" or for running through incompetent lieutenants would be cool.

Iron heroes does something similar to this, except the villain class in that game are meant for quick NPC creation. The Champion villain class is a streamlined PC class geared for combat. The Warlord is a villain class that can do things like cause adjacent troops to take damage instead of him.

It's available as a PDF at Green Ronin, For 17.50. That should save you some cash. ;)

Anyways, updating the Thaumaturge would make for an interesting project. But I think it can wait for another thread.

Liberty's Edge

To be honest, I've never been keen on "villain classes." Classes should be available for everyone, and core classes should be broad enough to incorporate even the most vile and depraved characters.
