4E Dungeon Crawl Classics

4th Edition

From Goodman Games:

By now you've probably all seen the announcement on EN World: the 4th edition open game license is officially announced! Goodman Games is excited to be on board, and we will be part of 4E from the launch.

It will all start with Free RPG Day, the event that Goodman Games created and which Wizards of the Coast is heavily sponsoring this year. Look for another free DCC -- this time 4th edition -- on June 21 from participating stores.

After that it's going to be a very big Gen Con, for a number of reasons. First, it will be the fifth anniversary of our DCC Open Tournament, and we're making it special. The module is already being crafted and it's a real challenge. The bar for competition will rise as we add more tables and more players than ever before. And of course there will be the fun fact that most people will only have a few months of experience with the game, which will level the playing field.

The second big aspect of Gen Con will be our releases. Of course Dungeon Crawl Classics will be well represented in the first wave of 4E releases. We are having some fun with the concept, and the presentation of the DCC series will change a little. I like to joke that we're upgrading from a 1E look to a 2E look. The same basic concepts will be there, and the adventures will be designed by the same talented writers, but you will be immediately able to distinguish a 4E DCC from a 3E DCC. And I think you'll like the new look.

Aside from the DCC series, we'll have some other fun products, too, but those details will be forthcoming in the future. Many of you know that I often prefer to post about a product only when I have something to show off, so we'll be announcing more details as we get the great cover designs polished up.

Interesting - but aren't they not supposed to release any 4E products until August 1st, under the OGL that WotC just released?

As long as they are still putting out DCCs for C&C.

That might not be the case for free products.

From a recent FAQ:

"9. Will the Phase One program make subsequent releases (the PHB 2, for instance) available to publishers more quickly?

No, it won't. The program only applies to the games’ launch and the first three core books. However, we will likely allow Phase One developers to distribute free 4e material on Free RPG Day, and to show (but not sell) sample books at Origins."

In last night's chat, James Jacobs mentioned that in light of the recent 4E OGL news, plans for Free RPG Day will probably change. They were planning on releasing Lost Baron 0 for GameMastery, but will now probably go with something more standalone and probably 4E.

Necromancer Games is also going to try to release Winter's Tomb on Free RPG Day.

AH... Missed that bit in all the legalese... Cool - IFF I get to a retailer that honors Free RPG day (and DON'T get to Origins) those will likely be the first (maybe ONLY) 4E products I acquire...

So sad...I loved DDC.

I will treasure all 52 adventures. :(

Sweet. That's good to hear.

So far looks like the three prime d20 companies I pay attention to are going to be paying the 5k fee and get a head start.

Nice.

Will they release the same crawls that were converted to 3.5 or previously unconverted crawls or a mixture of both?

Yeah, what he said.

I'd guess they will most likely be new adventures. Maybe they will convert some of the more popular 3.5 ones.

From the sound of it it will be all brand new adventures.

From what I keep hearing converting 3.5 adventures to 4th edition is more complicated than just writing new material from scratch.

I'll miss buying Goodman's products, but such is life.

(I have 51 DCCs - still waiting on #52.)

How many have you used?

I hope Monte Cook still puts out some more 3.5 products - some of my favorite books are from Monte and Malhavoc Press.

I think he may have retired, but I'm not sure...

There's still new stuff on his site. I can't believe he'd retire right after Ptolus. He (and Malhavoc Press) made a TON of great stuff.

I heard several months ago that he retired. He was trying something new I do not remember what that was. Maybe in the future after he has a break he will come back.

Only three so far....which is part of the reason I'm so not ready for 4E.

According to the notice I saw on his website, he had four (two or three Ptolus supplements and something else he was under contract for) game books in the works then was planning to retire to work on fiction and stuff outside of the industry for a few years, then maybe go back maybe not.

IIRC, the contracted book was his World of Darkness thing, and one of the Ptolus supplements is out too, I THINK.
