The only thing I would add is now this has raised discussion that we need stronger security in America's malls.
I'm picturing airport lines to enter malls. Not a good picture, but also not an unrealistic one of where this country is headed.
Social control by force and arm is certainly on the rise here. With the fear being groomed here, so many are prepared to set aside their rights to "feel safe."

Please please PLEASE let's not start a political thread.
For once, I agree with Kobold Cleaver here.
Well okay, maybe for like the third or fourth time, but you know what I mean.
Let's focus on the unfortunate facts and leave the speculation and finger-pointing to the "pundits."

I just heard about it. Of course it's deplorable, of course it's inexcusable.
But...
You don't have a high school diploma, you got fired from your job (at McDonald's), your girlfriend broke up with you and your mother threw you out of the house. Couple that with being emotionally unbalanced. I can't help but feel sorry for the guy.

Same here. He looks like a guy I knew in high school. He looks like a gamer.

The whole "check to get into the mall" is how it is in Israel, but they're quick and efficient there regarding the lines and such, and everyone walks around with guns, so the guy would have been shot back at immediately.
I mean this post as a sociological rather than political comment... as an anthropologist I find the comparison between cultures very interesting.

I grew up in Nebraska. When something like this happens in the state, it's like it happened to the WHOLE state.
My first reaction was worrying that none of my friends or their families were shopping there when it all went down.
I just listened to the 911 calls that came in during the shootings...oh, and the surveillance camera shot of him aiming his rifle.
Damn, damn, damn!

I am rather ashamed to admit that my first thought when I heard the story was "I hope to god he wasn't a gamer." Fortunately the actual tragedy hit me soon after.
I can't help but agree with you. That would just set off a new witch hunt. As if we didn't have enough to worry about...
