Female Human Cleric

Before descending the rope to the cave, Salome offers a quick prayer. "Guide us, Sarenrae, and us from evil." Activated Protection from Evil amulet.

Seeing the light rod and lantern, she decides to hold off on using a Light spell, figuring that it might come in handy a little later. I have four magical -- if temporary -- light sources that can be used whenever necessary.

Her face veiled, she follows closely behind Ehlissa (ladies first?!?) and feels her senses heightened in the dark. If there's anything we should be aware of in the goblin-squalor: Perception check (1d20+4=13).

Otherwise, she follows along with the group in silence. She, too is surprised by the missing wrathspawn corpse. Are there any clues as to its disappearance? Did it leave under its own locomotion, was it carried, eaten? Perception check 2 (1d20+4=19)

She nods when Vesh suggests checking their original route before taking the side-tunnel.

It looks like y'all did a lot of playing while I was working yesterday. I'll be busy tomorrow, too. So if I'm not around when things get interesting, my intention is to cast a Bless spell first/initiative round. Make some light if necessary. Do some dazzling swordwork with the scimitar. Kill off bad guys. Y'know.

Female Human (Chelaxian) Knight 1/Fighter 1/Paladin 1 (2)

Don't waste light spells when Ehlissa's around - she's shedding light equivalent to a torch with her sword.

"I concur" adds Ehlissa, "We don't want anything doubling back on us!"

Male Human (Varisian) Spellthief 4 (XP = 6405) as of 7/28, Wrathspawn and Shrine (10,000xp = 5th level)

We have an interesting assortment of light sources: if no one wants the sunrod, then give it to Malcolm so that he can see back there. The sunrod will illuminate to 30 ft/60 ft of shadowy illumination. Ehlissa's sword is 20/40, and Slidell's lantern is a 60/120 cone.

Vesh follows Slidell down the passage towards the trapdoor chamber.

Salome:

Spoiler:

A quick look at the cavern floor shows dried streaks of the creature's thick blood leading down the passageway. There is no way to tell if it went under its own power or not, but you are pretty sure it didn't walk.

also, no need to to the prot. evil until combat - it only lasts for one minute.

The trip through the rest of the tunnel goes quickly since you've been through twice before. The area between the side tunnel and the trapdoor appears to be secure.

Vesh makes sure that there are no other entrances, hidden or otherwise, into the chamber where the trapdoor is.

Vesh's search check (1d20+7=10).

When he's done, he nods and signals that he's ready to double-back.

Female Human Cleric

JSL:

Spoiler:
I had thought that the Protection from Evil 1/day meant that it was good for the day; I didn't realize until now it was just the limited spell. So I recant it. For now. I still have to get a hang of this. And everything else I'm doing!

Male Human (Varisian) Spellthief 4 (XP = 6405) as of 7/28, Wrathspawn and Shrine (10,000xp = 5th level)

Don't know how much I'll be able to post this weekend. See you on Monday at the very least.

Yep, that's Slidell, he has to carry his own spotlight wherever he goes!

Slidell sweeps the spot of his lantern around the trapdoor room, making sure there are no surprises hiding in the corners for them. After the others have verified the rest of the room is clear, and Vesh has looked at the trapdoor, Sli nods his readiness to go.

When they make their way back to the junction, Slidell, (having seen the blood streaks once they were pointed out by Salome), shines the spot of his lantern around, and searches the area once more,... quickly.

We don't have a tracker (anymore), but if we can spot some prints (or something), it might tell us something. Even if it's only 'Yep, they went this way'. :P

Slidell's search roll, Veran's SPOT roll: (1d20 3=5, 1d20 5=23)

Ahem... I don't think I divulged what was in the spoiler yet. I have an appointment to get to right now; I will post later tonight.

The ground is hard (rock) and does not hold prints. You can see by the light of your lantern that the passageway drops steeply over the next 20 feet or so, then twists around a corner and into darkness. The walls and floor are wet and the air is damp and cool.

Slidell Stormraven wrote:

"Alright," He says quietly, "I think it's safe to assume a couple of things. One, if we want these things to STAY down, we should probably torch them when we're done fighting them. Two, They may not NEED to eat, but they obviously can, and will." He nods, satisfied, and turns back to the others.

"I agree with Vesh. I think we can probably handle the Wrathspawn now that we know they are here, and are better prepared, But we should make sure our quickest way out is clear. Just in case." He picks his lantern back up, takes the safety off of his crossbow, and nods his readiness.

"Could've been rats. The little buggers'll eat the nose right off your face while you sleep if you're not careful. I've seen folks without toes or ears or fingers who went to sleep intact in an alley and woke up nibbled on." I say, briefly looking at the corpse before nodding "Aye, we're ready this time so as long as we don't get surrounded we should be okay. Lead on."

As you advance cautiously down the passage the slope grows steeper and the floor becomes slick with water. The drip drip drip sound of water falling from the the ceiling echoes from all directions. In some places, water is running in rivulets down the sides of the tunnel. All of this water is pooling at your feet and flowing a lattice of small streams down into the darkness beyond.

The passageway twists and turns, but always descends. Finally, you emerge into a larger chamber. Across from you, on the left side, is a pile of rubble. It appears to be the remains of a masonry wall that once blocked another passage leading from the chamber. The water has collected here as well, forming a brackish pool in the opposite half of the room. A faint gurgling sound emanates from the pool, suggesting that the water may be slowly draining.

Male Human (Varisian) Spellthief 4 (XP = 6405) as of 7/28, Wrathspawn and Shrine (10,000xp = 5th level)

Looking at the pile of rubble that was the wall, Vesh says quietly, "I'm glad that we packed a lunch; this could take a while longer than we thought."

Can we have the rough dimensions of the cavern?

It is roughly 20' by 15' - the size of a small studio appartment. It looks possible to crawl/climb over the rubble pile and into the passage beyond.

Um,... Oops? Sorry, I sometimes fail my spoiler will saves by a large margin. It seems this time it was so large I didn't even realize it WAS a spoiler! Sorry, My bad. (How much GP will it cost me to increase my RL will save?!?)

Slidell looks at the rubble with some consternation. "There are usually only two reasons to build a wall." He says quietly. "To keep something out, or to keep something IN. Judging by this,..." He says, indicating the amount of rubble in front of them. "Someone thought it was a STRONG reason. The fact that it's down can't be good."

Veran whispers into Slidell's ear. He rolls his eyes in response.
"Yah, yah. Vesh, Veran says to save me some cheese," He looks at the shorter man with a gleam in his eye. "He says it'll go good with my whine."

Slidell shines his light around the edge of the opening over the rubble, Careful not to shine it too far down the opening. "Well, shall we?" He says softly.

He turns and performs an exaggerated, sweeping bow as best he can with his arms full. "Ladies and armor first!" He smiles.

Slidell Stormraven wrote:

The pile of bricks and blocks is about 4 feet high by four feet wide and is flanked by the rough stone of the cavern on both sides. A roughly two foot wide by 18 inch high gap is at its summit.

By the lantern light, you can what appears to be worked stone through the gap in the masonry wall. The area appears to extend at least 20 feet beyond the rubble and an unknown distance to either side.

Basically, you had a 4 foot wide by 5 to 6 foot tall wall that has completely collapsed into a 4 foot high pile leaving a gap at the top.

The first person to go up and over needs to make a Climb check and a Ref save.

Female Human (Chelaxian) Knight 1/Fighter 1/Paladin 1 (2)

"I'll go, but I might need a hand." Ehlissa says as she regards the pile of rubble.

Would someone be able to Aid Another here to help with my climb check?

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1
Ehlissa Briez wrote:

I could hold up my staff for you to grab if the rubble shifted I guess, (trying to picture how 'Aid Another' would work in RL.) On second thought, Slidell's +0 to Str & +0 to skill in climb, PROBABLY not the best choice for a helper! NEXT?

Slidell steps aside to let those with actual skill in climbing help Ehlissa. :)

Female Human Cleric

Don't look at me; my Climb is -5!

Guess its Mal to the rescue;)
"If you fall, try to do it quitely; There's probably things on the other side of that wall that want to kill us." I say, grunting slightly as I boost Ehlissa up the wall as much as I can and try to help her stay up there.
Climb to assist 14 (12+2)

Male Human (Varisian) Spellthief 4 (XP = 6405) as of 7/28, Wrathspawn and Shrine (10,000xp = 5th level)

Climb roll to assist Ehlissa (1d20-1=19)!

Of course! I roll a natural 20 when I'm not trying to hit something.

Female Human (Chelaxian) Knight 1/Fighter 1/Paladin 1 (2)

"Thanks chaps!" huffs Ehlissa as she attempts to make her way over the rubble.

Climb check (my skill modifier + 2 successful aid anothers) (1d20-2+4=6) Reflex save (1d20+2=20)

Huh, well, I can't climb but I sure can dodge!

Ehlissa scrambles up the pile of rubble and, with a final push from Vesh and Malcolm, crests the summit. However, the back side is a steep drop into darkness and she overbalances on the edge, sending a tumult of loose stone cascading over the edge and crashing to the floor below. Luckily, she reaches back with her free hand and grabs the cavern wall to the side of the opening, catching herself before she too tumbles.

By the light of her sword, Ehlissa can see:

Spoiler:

that the area beyond the wall is a large passageway easily wide enough for four men to walk abreast. The floor is at least ten feet below your feet; the roof is only a couple of feet above your head. The passage extends in both directions beyond the range of your light.

Ehlissa is dangling feet first and back to the party over the edge, holding on with her hand at the side of the gap.

Female Human (Chelaxian) Knight 1/Fighter 1/Paladin 1 (2)

"Aargh!"

Ehlissa's arm burns with effort, weighed down with shield, armour and sword.

"Help!"

Male Human (Varisian) Spellthief 4 (XP = 6405) as of 7/28, Wrathspawn and Shrine (10,000xp = 5th level)

Vesh scrambles and makes a grab for Ehlissa's hand.

What should I roll for?

Unmodified roll for success (1d20=3).

That doesn't look good.

Vesh wrote:

But a loose stone breaks free under his weight and he lands in a cloud of dust at the foot of the rubble.

Ehlissa strains with the effort of holding on. Her fingers are white from exertion slippery with sweat. Make a DC 10 Constitution check (modified for Endurance if applicable).

Options: Ehlissa can let go and fall, possibly using Jump (DC 15) to avoid damage. If someone can toss her a rope (Use Rope DC 10), treat that as Aid Another on the Jump check. If she wants to pull herself up, it will be a DC 15 Strength check - modified for rope as above. If someone else wants to pull her up, first make a Climb check (DC 15) to get up to her safely and with enough leverage to pull. Then the strength DC is 13 since you are working together (like an automatic Aid Another). Could it BE any more complex?!? ;)

Female Human (Chelaxian) Knight 1/Fighter 1/Paladin 1 (2)

CON check (1d20+1=11) STR check (1d20+2=18) I get knocked down, but I get up again!

Her arm burns in agony, and her muscles scream as she grits her teeth; flinging her swordarm onto the ledge, she pulls herself up, letting out a rather unladylike shout of effort.

Ok. Ehlissa pulls herself around and is now comfortably facing the party with her toes on a narrow ledge of rock and her face and shoulders framed in the opening.

Female Human (Chelaxian) Knight 1/Fighter 1/Paladin 1 (2)

"Well... there's a 10 foot drop, for a start. But it's very wide down there." she says in between huffing and puffing.

*Coughing,* Vesh gets up and dusts himself off. "For Desna's *cough* fu*cough*ing rubble."

He kneels and produces a rope from his pack. Uncoiling it, he offers Ehlissa one end and hands Malcolm the slack. "Just like on the cliff-face Ehlissa. Slow and easy. We'll secure the other end."

EDIT: I vote for a ten xp story award for successfully navigating the dreaded rubble encounter! Who's with me? ;)

Vesh wrote:

OK. May as well get it over with since I think you've got the stats ready to go. Hearing you level up in the halls, the monsters call for Kirk Radomski to deliver some growth hormone! Congratulations. Now that I don't have to worry so much about *accidentally* killing someone, I can throw the kitchen sink at you! ;)

With Malcolm and Vesh steadying the rope, Ehlissa lowers herself to the floor below. Taking a step back, she staggers as she takes in the cyclopean magnitude of the tunnel.

It is wider and deeper than any structure you have seen - much less under ground. The walls, floor, and ceiling are formed of perfectly square stone blocks of an impossibly uniform blue-grey hue. The four corners of the passage have been blasted smooth, forming perfect right angles and exposing bands of white granite running its length. Carved in the sides of these members are an endless stream of symbols.

Aside from the pile of bricks from the opening above, the passage is free of dust and grime as if it has lain untouched for centuries. The air is dead still and you notice, for the first time in this place, bone dry.

The passage continues beyond the light of your sword in both directions. However, from your left, you hear the faint ping of iron on iron.

For reference, the passage is 20' wide and 20' high and runs straight from right to left an unknown distance.

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

Seeing Ehlissa slip,
-Slidell starts to jump in, thinks better of it and stays back out of the way so Vesh and Malcolm can help, A 10 Str, What am I gonna do, catch her? :)
-Opens his mouth to cast a spell, and realizes that he doesn't even have that one in his spellbook, "Does ANYone actually use 'Feather Fall'? " He wonders.
-Reaches for a scroll, but seeing her hang on, realizes that it's not a life or death emergency, yet, Whew, save that for later,...
-SO he settles for watching helplessly, but likes to think that crossing his fingers helped a little.

Breathing a sigh of relief, he offers his hand to Vesh to help him up from where he landed.

"I think that went rather well." Slidell says, straight-faced, as he helps knock some of the dust off of Vesh's back.
While the others are working with the rope, Slidell picks back up his lantern and shines it around the area. "I know we checked and cleared this side, but still,..."

After a few moments of checking the area, he realizes that the rope is no longer moving, and the silence is deafening. "Ehlissa?" He calls softly, "Is everything alright?"

Male Human (Varisian) Spellthief 4 (XP = 6405) as of 7/28, Wrathspawn and Shrine (10,000xp = 5th level)

Using his grappling hook to set the rope (and leave it as a way to escape), he turns to Salome. "Okay, let's get down the rope. Salome, Slidell, then me and Mal."

Vesh wrote:

Salome is again impressed by the instinctive bravery of Lady Ehlissa. She observes the manuevers, feeling helpless to assist. Reflexively, she does a quick head-to-toe glance of Vesh to make sure he's OK. Of course he is. He's moving just fine, isn't he? she chides herself. I've been in the healing business too long, she sighs.

As quickly as she can in full armor, Salome scrambles up the pile of rubble and joins Ehlissa in the palatial cavern. "What is this place?" she asks.

Perception check (1d20+4=12) The cleric went over the mountain (inside the mountain) to see what she could see...

I move forward to help keep Ehlissa from falling, wary of being crushed under the armor-clad woman.
Climbing up the rope and looking out onto the cavern before us I say "Where the Hell are we? This doesn't look like a smuggler's tunnel."

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

Nodding to Vesh as he resets the safety on the crossbow, Veran flaps over the rubble as Slidell makes his way across rather less gracefully. Once on the other side, Slidell brushes himself off, muttering about the dignity of mages. Veran coughs to attract his attention, and he looks up, and up, and up,...

He responds to the others questions with a simple statement that proves his intelligence.

"Wow."

Oh, yeah! He's moving just fine!...Sorry.

Vesh follows Slidell up-and-over to the huge passage beyond. He is struck by the scene before him. "I've seen a fair amount of strange things in my short life," he says, "I've never seen anything like this."

He sheaths Ameiko's dagger and draws his bow instead. "Left or right?"

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

"Me either my friend." Slidell responds absent-mindedly as he closely examines the formation of the smooth, blue-grey walls. HE bends down and begins examining the strip of granite with the symbols on it running the length of the floor.

Decipher Script if I need it. I'm guessing maybe THIS is why I took Thassilonian as a language?

Slidell's Decipher Script roll (BEFORE level-up!): (1d20+8=24)

Vesh wrote:

Veran has to peck at Slidell's ear to get his attention away from the symbols.

"Ow! Quittit!" He snaps automatically. "What? Oh, Which way?" He parrots, getting to his feet.

"Well, I'm right-handed, and I tend to always go to the right first. However, the noises are coming from the left, and we did come down here with the intention of finding out who, or what, is here. Is that,... metal on metal?" He asks, turning his head to try and identify the sound.

Slidell Stormraven wrote:

The symbols indeed appear to be Thassilonian. However, they are large and widely spaced. Within the radius of your lightsource, you can only make out a few syllables: "...rakhan O Alzan..."

Male Human (Varisian) Spellthief 4 (XP = 6405) as of 7/28, Wrathspawn and Shrine (10,000xp = 5th level)

Once Malcolm jumps down, Vesh tests the rope to make sure it is secure. Then hefting his pack, and bow in hand, Vesh says, "Left it is, eh?"

Double-wide marching order? Row 1: Ehlissa and Salome; Row 2: Slidell; Row 3: Vesh and Malcolm. Like the pips on the 'five' side of a d6.

I like it, gives the mage a clear(er) field of fire without having to worry about his comrades!

Slidell nods his agreement at Vesh's suggestion, and takes his place in the middle of the formation, crossbow laying across his left arm holding the lantern. But he is shining his lantern light at the strip of granite next to the floor, brow furrowed in concentration and lips moving silently as he struggles to string the large letters together into something coherent.

Forging ahead cautiously, you are all conscious of the echo of even the slighest noise in the cavernous passageway. No matter how quiet you try to be, everything from your footfalls, to the jingling of armor and weapons, to even the sounds of your breathing appears to echo back to you from the walls and depths of this place. And yet, when you pause to listen, everything is strangely still and silent except for the strange regular ping ... ping ... ping like the light tap of a smith's hammer as he makes the gentle finishing strokes on a piece of work.

The way is straight and you walk for what seems like a long time before the light of Ehlissa's sword is reflected back to you in brilliant glory by a shiny surface stretched across the passage. Dimming your lights slightly so as not to blind yourselves, you see that the passage is blocked by a large, impossibly bright metal plate. Embossed on the plate is the visage of a stern, angular woman. Her eyes are wide, her hair is wild, and her lips are turned in a disdainful sneer. Above her face is an angular symbol: the left half like a slanted distorted "S" and the right half a mirror image of the left. This symbol is repeated in a rotated fashion on each side and below the face.

The metallic pinging sound, still faint, appears to emanate from beyond the panel.

You are twenty feet from the panel.

Slidell:

Spoiler:

"...O Bakrakhan ... shalt thou rise ... O Alzanist ... shalt thou rule ... ere the mighty of Xin ... the mighty of Shalast ... before thee ... in flames ..."

Male Human (Varisian) Spellthief 4 (XP = 6405) as of 7/28, Wrathspawn and Shrine (10,000xp = 5th level)

Vesh steps forward about 10 feet and looks at the plate. His brow furrows as he extends his hand and says "eisae."

He's casting Detect Magic, of course.

To get his next step out of the way, I'll roll Vesh's Search roll now (1d20+8=18)

Perception 13 (7+6)
I stay alert, eyeing the statue of the woman warily "Anybody know who that is? She looks a little like my aunt. What've we've found? I'm pretty sure we're not in a smuggler's hide-out anymore."

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

Muttering to himself, Slidell doesn't even notice when Vesh casts his spell.

"...O Bakrakhan ... shalt thou rise ... O Alzanist ... shalt thou rule ... ere the mighty of Xin ... the mighty of Shalast ... before thee ... in flames ..." Slidell murmurs, repeating the words as if willing them to make sense.

"This doesn't make any,... ah, wait. This," He says still softly but aloud, turning his attention to the metal plate. "Must be the Thassilonian Runelord Alzanist, the 'Mistress of Wrath'. SHE created the Wrathspawn! According to what I read in the scroll." He looks unsure. "At least that's my guess, we DID find Wrathspawn here, the conclusion is only logical."

He stares at the mirror-image symbol above the lady's head in the bas-relief. "I don't recognize the other names, but I wasn't searching for them in the scroll at the time. This rune is unusual. Her personal Rune perhaps? But why put it on the four sides like the points of a compass? Why do a bas-relief at all? Not very flattering really, If your trying to take over the world, you think you'd want your portrait to be of your best side. Unless that IS her best side." He shudders.

Vesh:

Spoiler:

As you complete the incantation and gaze upon the mirrored wall, you see arcs of magical energy emanating from all around, but especially from the symbols framing the image. You only begin to concentrate on the auras when you feel something go wrong. The woman's face becomes a twisted visage of fear and hate. The symbols pulse in an angry reddish color. A faint buzzing sound in your ears grows suddenly louder and you find your hands involuntarily clasped over your ears in defense. Her mouth is moving. She's saying something to you. But the words are foreign to your mind. She is shouting. Screaming into your head. You try to recoil. Try to call for help. Warm liquid spills from behind your hands. Blood. Your ears are bleeding!

You take 3 points of sonic damage. Make a DC 15 Will save or be stunned.

Others:
Vesh approaches the panel and casts his spell. For a moment, all seems okay as you see him begin to study the image in his mind. Then suddenly he clasps his hands to his ears and staggers back a step. Blood streams down his arms as his face contorts in a strange, silent scream.

Perception DC 15:

Spoiler:

The image on the wall seems to shift ever so slightly as if it is following your movement with its eyes. A feeling of dread overcomes you and you involuntarily take a step back.

Dropping his bow, Vesh clutches at his ears. He falls to his knees and doubles-over, writhing as the blood spilling through his fingers pools on the floor on either side of him.

He does not seem to register Ehlissa's presence.
