It is eastiest to send you to the Wikipedia entry for the Circle of Eight. The Citadel was an earlier incarnation of the Circle, and not all wizards.

In terms of "real history", the Citadel was from Gygax's own Greyhawk campaign, whereas the all-wizard Circle was created after he was forced out of TSR, and was basically a dumping ground for famous names.

That's not _quite_ right. Gygax used the Circle of Eight several times before he was pushed out of TSR, notably in "Artifact of Evil."

Thanks! I never thought about looking online for Greyhawk stuff. I never realized how much stuff has been written. Ive tried looking on the cannonfire fourms but there is just so much stuff to go through. Last time I checked they didnt have asearch function which made trying to locate specifics difficult at best.As a side note its always nice to be able to post somthing that draws the attention of the very busy Erik Mona.

You can search on CF!, it's just not a very-well-refined search engine.

Jason Zavoda's index is a wonderful resource that all GH fans with a scholarly-inclination will put to good use. (See other recent posts by me today for links).

Are there specific GH topics you're trying to dig into, in particuar, S_SM?

Allan.

Well Im currently running a campaign set in Sterich. I spent some time on CF but it was a time consuming process, that while was informative and interesting didnt seem to help me work on that campaign much.

For fun Ive been reading up on Maure Castle and considering possible campaign options if and when I ever get a chance to run the currently published levels.

One of my current concerns running a Greyhawk campaign has become-How do I make it FEEL like a Greyhawk campaign as opposed to anyother campaign setting. Some of my friends tend to see Greyhawk as too generic and arnt as pumped about it as say they might be about an Eberron game.

I became interested in Greyhawk when I read the Gord the Rouge novels about a year or two before 3rd edition came out, but that interest fell with a lack of material available to me. Dungeon revitalized that interest for me and the internet has made available resources, and OOP material making Greyhawk a viable option again.

Im not sure exactly what it is about Greyhawk that I love so much, I guess part of it is that old school feel to it. Which is strange because I really only started playing D&D maybe 23 years after it all began.

That is the million dollar question, and it will get you about a Thousand differnt answers.

Here is the take that I and several other G.M,'s I know run with.

Forgotten Realms = More clear cut Good/Evil and more epic/over the top
Greyhawk = Lots of shades of grey, more grim feeling, less epic, more personal
Ebberron = Lots of shades Grey, and epic in a backstaby kind of way (film Noir)
Dark Sun = Very Grim, and bleak.
Planescape = Very Grand with a a good mix of politics

Of course this is just in the broadest of terms. You could of course do a very bleak and dark FR game, and a very Clear Cut Good/Evil Greyhawk game.

But I generally stick the ther break down I listed, which I think (and players tell me) makes each setting feel different and unique.
