Item Cards: overstock of consumables

Accessories

Now that I've built up a collection of Item Cards from each of the sets and boosters, I've noticed an overabundance of disposables such as scrolls, potions, wands, and staffs (an issue I've discussed elsewhere in this forum). I'm curious if anyone else has built up such an overstock and finds it frustrating that sets such as Dragon's Trove is nearly half filled with such items. Perhaps I don't have enough spellcasters in my campaign, but it just seems that with every pack I buy, I end up dramatically increasing that collection of items despite their ability to be reused after being consumed. Am I alone with this sentiment?

I haven't experienced this problem directly (I only own a couple of packs, so my collection is tiny), but if this is in fact true, I would strongly encourage Paizo to stop producing consumables for a while. Those more than any other card type are reusable once consumed, and players will consume them at a steady pace, so flooding people's collections with these types of cards might be counter-productive.

I personally like having multiples of consumables, mainly so multiple characters can have the same card for common scrolls, potions, etc. If you're overloaded, perhaps we can trade. For most of my nonconsumables, I only like having one of each...

I'll post my latest trade list a little later when I'm not at work.

I might be up for trading some of my stock. I don't match consumables with their effects, which adds more versatility to each potion card, especially when the players are stocking up before an adventure and are buying potions by the dozen. Additionally, I don't think my players care enough to be picky about which artwork they have for a spell on a scroll. I do admit that I sometimes match wands with spells, but that's not a constant.

That is indeed a concern of ours that I think I've heard Jason express in the past. On the other hand, we have to assume that every new set we put out is someone's first set, so we have absolutely must include certain essentials in every set.

Why couldn't Item Pack I or any of the boosters fill that role? Heck, even Dragon's Trove, which includes 40-something of these consumables, acts as a good starter set. The content listings on the web site help resolve that issue as could including such lists on the packaging.

Hey Amaril,

I understand what you're saying. Item Pack 1 was actually very miserly when it came to consumables (4 potions, 4 scrolls, 4 wands). The boosters for Hero's Hoard and Relics of War, on the other hand, were overkill (2 potions, 1 scroll, 1 wand, and a 50% chance of a rod or staff) out of 10 cards. That's why it was difficult to collect a full set of armor, weapons, or wondrous items.

Hopefully the balance gets a little better with the non-random packaging. However, as Kyle said, there are people who are happy to trade for extra potions and scrolls. I haven't seen anyone actively seeking extra wands, though.

You're right in that I'm thinking more about the boosters rather then Item Pack I. Also, wands really aren't so much an issue as potions and scrolls are. Hero's Hoard, Relics of War, and Dragon's Trove should meet the needs of new users needing potions and scrolls, which is why I think future decks should not include those items and allow for space for other things we've all been in need of. (By the way, I have waaay too many longswords. :P )

I'm going to do some accurate inventory of my item cards, not including the ones my players are currently using, but I probably won't get to it until next week as I have a game session tomorrow night for which I need to prep tonight and family visiting over the weekend after that.

Hi Amaril,

I just read through the discussion thread for Dragon's Trove, and I wonder if part of your frustration about consumables comes from a miscount by Superbeast. There are not 20 potions and 20 scrolls in the set. In fact, there are many fewer potions in Dragon's Trove (11) than in Hero's Hoard or Relics of War (18 each).

Here's the distribution:

13 Armors (down from 15 in Hero's and 14 in Relics)
22 Weapons (down from 24 in Hero's and 23 in Relics)
11 Potions (way down from 18 each in Hero's and Relics)
5 Rings
10 Scrolls
2 Rods
4 Staves
10 Wands
33 Wondrous Items (way up from 22 in Hero's and 23 in Relics)

I really like the increase in wondrous items.

Sincerely,
Derek

Not quite. My frustration isn't over just consumables within Dragon's Trove specifically, but over the abundant supply of non-specific items such as rings, staffs, wands, scrolls, and potions in contrast to distinct wondrous items, weapons, and armor across all sets. My collection now includes a massive stack of those non-specific items.

Got it. Would you send me an email or post your email address? I'd be willing to take a bunch of potions (and a few scrolls) off your hands (in trade or purchase).
