PREREQUISITES

SORCERER: LEVEL 3
SPELLS: Ray based Spells-RAY OF FROST (L0), RAY OF ENFEEBLEMENT(L1)
SKILLS:SPELLCRAFT, CRAFT (Gemcutting), Craft (Carpentry)
FEATS: STILLSPELL, CRAFT WONDEROUS ITEM

WHAT IS GOING ON: You are inventing and building a magic weapon. WIth Carpentry and Gemcutting you are crafting an intricate wooden mechanism right down to the rifle stock, wooden ring lensholders, wooden screws and Gemcut lenses.
This Lens Aparatus is simply a tool by which you cast your Ray spells. Hey presto you have a sorcerer with a "raygun" Material components then become the "gunpowder" or flashpowder satchel needed to fire each ray type in what is a primitive style laser.

The Skills allow you to build it and Feats allow you to use it with increasing speed and accuracy and skill until such time as you can permanently enchant the weapon.

Durn watched as Anjo the Sorcerer pulled the strange aparatus from its wooden case. It looked like a crossbow without the bow, it was mounted by a strange lensholding and a wooden pipe.
He planted a small cloth satchel in a breach in the pipe, toggled the lens into position between the satchel and pipe and spoke a word as he pulled a trigger mechanism on the underside.
The satchel flashed and a ray fired through the lens to the target dealing it some damage.
He repeated this another three times taking a moment to clean out the remnants of the old cloth satchel and inserting a new lens until the approaching creature died.

"Out of Ammo. I guess the rest are yours." Anjo put the weapon away.

SO what are your thoughts on this concept? It is innevitable that even magic evolves with time.

Well I think it has good flavor, but I think it not as good as a wand and a sorcerer would use a wand before a raygun. Can other classes use this weapon or just arcane casters (and classes with use magic item skill)? I can see a tinkering sorcerer maybe selling them, or maybe he's just alittle nutting and wants to use his invention. I don't think the average player will be behind the raygun, but good fun idea.

Well yes because as it happens the Magical Raygun is a wonderous item...How do you differentiate a Wonderous Item with Charges from a Wand with Charges. A wonderous Item has each individual charge confined to an individual Gem (Power Crystal fragment aka fireball necklace) while a Wand has all the Charges in one gem (Power Crystal aka wand of fireballs).

THis allows you to create a wonderous frost raygun(1125gp) (with range doubler lens if human (Range doubler lens +1125gp)) at third level, add a damage magnifier lens at seventh level (Damage intensifier lens +2250gp), and highspeed stock at 14th level allowing six magic item uses in a single round because each trigger pull is a free action and you can get away with 6 - 12 free actions in a turn.(Highspeed Stock +4500gp)

So for the price of 9000gp over a period of development L3-L14 your sorcerer can produce a frost rifle D2-4/6 free action attacks per round/50 charges/Range 60'.

Ummm....I'm going to say that many free actions is a no on anything. There are limits on free actions. I think when it comes to anything weapon-wise that can be used to attack shouldn't be a free action. I would make each trigger pull be a standard action, so no one will shoot six times, charge then attack, or cast another spell. Neat idea, but I would have to tune it way down. His to his own.
