Art on the web

Off-Topic Discussions

I've noticed that there's a lot of artists and art lovers on here and just thought y'all would enjoy THIS. It's amazing to focus on the eyes and watch art history through the years.

So sit back and enjoy.

Very frillin' cool! It looks like it got harder to work the morphing as the timeline went on.

Especially when they hit the Picasso stuff.

I can't watch it at the moment because I'm on dial-up, but the jist is the changing/constant representation of "the ideal woman", right?

That ideal face kind of took on steam with Leonardo's "Lita and the Swan" and was then adopted by Mannerist artists and continued on. I'm sure it's an awesome thing to watch, and I'll check it out when I have the opportunity.

And for the record, besides Dungeon, Juxtapoz is the only other magazine I buy regularly. They have a particular group of aesthetics that they cover almost exclusively, but there's enough variety to make it worth looking at. They don't just cover Mark Ryden's gang out in California, which is good, even though I love Ryden.

James, have you checked out ImagineFX? It's my newest favoritest art mag.

OOoh, very neat. Anyone else notice how many of the women had the same mouth?

Wow. Those were cool. Lilith your stuff is cool too! Didn't know you did art and dark beer. sweet!

No, I haven't really. It looks pretty interesting. I actually need to start learning more about how to do digital work; would you recommend it for tutorial purposes?

The name rings a bell, but it may just be that in a class in school about contracts and self-promotion the contract of a company with a similar name was presented to us by my teacher Yuko Shimizu as the worst contract she had ever seen. The magazine in question (which may NOT have been this one, I'm not smearing anybody) wanted to do a little interview/digital tutorial on her work, but the contract stipulated that if she took the opportunity, anything she chose to run in the magazine would become property of the magazine. Not good. Always read the fine print!

While we're swapping websites, this is my friend and mentor Dan Dos Santos' website. He's amazing. I worked with him and his studio mate during my last year of high school and I doubt I would be as dedicated to making art as I am today if it weren't for him. An amazing artist and a really sweet guy; he's trying to get me to go back to making D&D related artwork and I'm starting to take his advice. And, Lilith, he's always really interested in looking at anyone's artwork and he's totally into helping out however he can. Shoot him an email, ask if he wants to see your work. He's also active on Concept Art.org's forums, which I haven't joined yet because I'm a silly billy. Tor Books' award winning art director and all around awesome person Irene Gallo has a blog about fantasy artwork and working on book covers for Tor that's very informative and fun. If you look under the School of Visual Arts entry, I'm actually in one of the group shots (with freakin' Donato Giancola, Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell as well as a lot of my fellow students!), looking silly in the back.

Just a quick word about ImagineFX - it is a Brit magazine, so the cost of the magazine per issue runs about $15 (ouch) - but you do get a DVD of software and project files and other goodies. I signed up for a sub, 54 British Pounds, which worked out to about $107 with the current craptacular exchange rate.

Really? NEAT! I'll have to shoot him an email.

You really really should join the CA forums. Even just for the Daily Sketch Group - I should, of course, take my own advice and get back on that wagon.

Also, apparently GenCon will be doing portfolio reviews - something I'm most assuredly signing up for. Just gotta remember to cast stoneskin beforehand - it's been a while since I splayed out the 'folio for a pro critique.

I always get a weird feeling from portfolio critiques. I've done a few and I guess maybe it's because none of the people at the event ran publications up my alley, but I got a lot of "It's good! But, I don't think we can use it." I'm too weird for a lot of places, apparently and my painting isn't quite as strong as my drawing.

But, yeah, a thick skin is important for these, escpecially at conventions. Keeping in mind that the people you're talking to have looked at a ton of portfolios all day, they're jetlagged, etc., don't feel bad if they just flip through, say "not what we're looking for" and then ask for the next person. It's never personal, I know a lot of really talented people that have gotten that. If there are artists with websites that you like out there, send an email addressed personally to them and ask if they would look at your work. I've met maybe two or three illustrators that weren't nice people. The other whole bunch were always very nice and helpful.

Now that I'm doing more fantasy/D&D stuff, I plan on joining CA. Just haven't gotten around to it.

Shameless self-promotion and attention mongering: I have a real website now, not just a blog.
JamesMKeegan.com
It's pretty basic and simple, since I'm still learning how to work with Dreamweaver and everything. But as I make more samples and update, it should get even better. Won't you come join us?

Look at this guy's art:

Link

I should before anyone clicks on that link that it's not light and fluffy, but it's very good!

Very frustrating. I can't seem to look at the first link in the original post no matter how hard I try. :(

Yay! I finally got it to work. That was really cool! :)
