Living Greyhawk & Hardcover Adventure Paths

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

This might have already been discussed on here but in searching I couldn't find anything on this topic, and so if I missed it and it's already been discussed I apologize and would be pleased if someone could point me in the right direction. I have read some stuff that states it's uncertain if there will be any more beyond the already existing Shacked City. I think that you could easily find the demand for a product if it was marketed correctly. If the staff of Dungeon Magazine and the Circle of Living Greyhawk worked together they could allow for these Adventure Paths to be sanctioned for play within the campaign. In doing so there would be lots of perks for both Pazio and the RPGA Living Greyhawk listed below

Perks for Pazio:

1) Sell More Dungeon Magazine: If the hardcovers are exactly the same as the 12 installments in prior in the magazine you would probably get alot of LG DMs that aren't currently subscribed to the magazine that would become such.

2) Target Audience for the Hardcover: It's probably a risky move to publish that big monster hardback book without knowing it probably will sell fairly well. Incorporating it into the biggest longest running 3rd Ed campaign would ensure that alot of them sell.

Perks for RPGA:

1) A module that takes character from level 1-20 with a linked storyline. Only work for the RPGA would be to modify it to work for various party levels which are a lot easier than writing up the whole module and also modifying it. Alternately they could just say a character playing that series can’t play anything else and must play the adventure path in complete chronological order. This works into less work for modifying APLs. There is no need to play anything else since it’s designed to take you close to 20th level. The fact that you would have several parts in the storyline of an adventure path to still play once you hit 16th level (normally in RPGA your character is retired and can only play in a few special modules), so it would work for some players that want to get the chance at higher level play

2) The adventure paths are already set in Greyhawk and they aren’t in regions that really interfere with any other established regions or plotlines that I’m aware, but I’m just getting back involved with the RPGA and I gotta say they have gotten really organized and the restrictions on items from books beyond the 3.5 core is fairly vast and balanced.

I think that the fact that players can play the adventures in Dungeon Magazine and get player reward points is a great starting point. However the fact that it’s for a limited time makes it really hard to do, for example I started DMing the Savage Tide Campaign when it first came out and we play every Friday and we fell behind the latest module so getting player reward points for them won’t be possible unless we have a Weekend Marathon to catch up. Player reward points for playing the module shouldn’t be time sensitive.

Nothing in my post was meant to bash on Pazio, The RPGA, or Wizards I like all three of them. I’m sure the business aspects of doing my suggestions are a lot tougher than I made it sound. I’m just wondering if maybe the idea had been talked about and perhaps in the future something along those lines might be possible. If it’s not a feasible venture that I’m curious if someone could explain why not, I really enjoy the storylines of all the Adventure Paths and think they would be fun to run RPGA character through as well as DM.

Thanks & Always Good Gaming,
Matt Butler

In reading over my post I realized I did not ever really ask for opinions and thoughts on this, which is really what I was looking for.

Opinions? Thoughts?

Please feel free to start a discussion on this topic I'm interested in what people have to say and think about the above ideas.

Thanks,
~MB

That link isn't working for me. I think the thread may be dead.

Yeah - my link refers to a thread in the archives - once some one followed it and posted it was moved out of the archives and, at that moment, my link ceased to be good.

The market for future Greyhawk and Adventure Path hardcovers is obvious. Paizo doesn't need to be convinced of anything. The ball is in Wizards of the Coast's court.

Hey Mona,

Thanks for taking the time to post in this place. You rule.

I just want to put in my two cents on something. I can't get a copy of Tetreault's Greyhawk city map, I've been trying for about 5 months. I wasn't around when it came out, but now I am back into D&D after a 15 year hiatus and I'd like an update on the city (I've got the original).

I've ordered used copies twice and they came without the maps. I had no problem getting my money back, yet I remain mapless.

So here's my vote for an updated city of Greyhawk, not that it's up to you, but who else am I supposed to tell?

KA

PS Hope you read this, can't wait to see what you guys did to Castle Greyhawk and inflict it on my noob players, and I'm sure I speak for all the other clowns in here, too.

Is there anything in particular we can do to help press the issue?

Kruelaid, you can find a low-resolution version of my map of the City of Greyhawk on my website at http://melkot.com/locations/cogh/cogh.html along with the CoG Undercity Map (which was never published).

I have NO idea what the accompanying map for EtGR is going to look like, but this summer Anna Bernemalm and I will be unleashing onto my website an updated map of the Free City using 3D topography that will blow all other maps out of the water. ;-) Check out the geographic topography maps on my Irongate Region webpage to see the results of our first collaboration. So stay tuned!

Short of applying for (and somehow getting) WotC's RPG Brand Manager position, probably not alot. I'd say "write a letter to WotC", however seeing as everyone (including alot of very experienced people in the business) have already flat out said that it (and all Greyhawk) would sell gangbusters, with no effect whatsoever on WotC management... your letter would likely not have much of an effect either. I think its just a matter of waiting to see if they change their minds at some point.

Ok, so sometimes it takes a while for an idea to form but what about this,

1) Wizards are not authorising any Greyhawk material even though they know there is a call for it.

2) Wizards are limiting the AP Hard covers that are kind of set in that world. (limiting any official changes to the setting).

3) Speculation abounds about 4th edition

Could the conclusion be that 4th edition would be launched with a hardback Greyhawk setting as the core world. Thus seeing a return to 1st edition basics and ensuring great launch sales?

They could then either produce there own support material or allow Paizo to produce the AP's already in third edition but with an update to 4th edition. This would bring the Paizonians on board and ensure better sales of the AP's.

If I was Brand manager for WOTC and there was a fourth edition on the horizon this is what I would do. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it and its all to do with boring legal stuff.

One of the things the book includes is a full-page reproduction of the Tetreault map by former Dungeon Art Director Mike Schley that must be seen to be believed. All of the maps are absolutely phenomenal.

I see the issues of LGJ #2 crop up on eBay from time to time. Paizo had a box of them but I think they ran out. I strongly suggest that people interested in maybe picking up the Living Greyhawk Journal back issues we have for sale on Paizo.com do so soon, as supplies are getting low and then they will soon be gone forever.

Yes, I've seen it, that's why I wanted to get something with better resolution. I've been all the way through your site, it's got some good resources, and you certainly have an acuity for realistic proportion in civil construction. That's someone who has seen far more than a handful of old world cities in both Europe and Asia and your stuff seems the most believable among its peers (okay, there are few peers).

Incidentally, if something is not available, like your map, one of these days someone's gonna upload a scan of your map onto a filesharing net. Sure, I'd take it, but I'd rather have the real thing--and more importantly I'd rather see that you get your share.

I'm just so sick of ordering LGJ#2 and getting no map (twice is enough).

While I'm on the topic of your map(s), thanks for all the advice on map making. I finished my first small city (Port Toli) last month and I've worked the kinks out and built a nice library of symbols and textures. I use Adobe Illustrator for the mapping and Photoshop for touch up and text.

The one piece of advice you left out? 100 layers into the map I had to go out and buy 2 1G strips of RAM (pulled two half Gig strips, I'm at 2.5 now). A little puff of smoke from the blacksmith's shop crashed me. Judging from my puny, but intricate 3D town, a drool worthy map of Greyahwk or Irongate must need 3G (or more?). Maybe that's just Illustrator...

So again, thanks for the advice, I tip my hat to you too, can't wait to see where you take (have taken) Irongate.

Adieu
KA

A nice carrot, I'll take one, even if it is only a full page. But you know what we all really want; you mull through the posts.

Were there complaints about the (poster sized) LGG map from the comparison monkeys? Less detail than (poster sized) Darlene, yadda yadda? Then there's the GUARANTEED-2-B-SOLD-OUT-EVERYWHERE (poster sized) LGJ2, and that was a quickie job compared to what CAN be done (And COULD be on our walls). Not to mention that it doesn't come complete with either a write up of all the locations or the sewer map which Maldin provided for free when people could have been paying money for it in a hardcover.

Wait, I be preaching to the choir. . .

Well, God forgive you if you aren't secretly working on more things that will make us really happy, Mona, and get back to work, by the way.

j/k-publisher who corresponds with readers-awesome.

;)

Hmm

Former art director Mike Schley does a "phenomenal" "full page" map of the City of Greyhawk. It's safe to say he's not painting cave walls so I assume his vector graphic of the city can be printed any size with razor sharp resolution. So one is led to ask, who has Schley's Greyhawk in poster sized glory?

Dark Archive

I'm reserving judgement on this map until I hear more. Tentatively I'm looking to buy a magnifying glass ;)

Thanks, Kruelaid! I'm glad you found my mapping advice page useful.
Yes, I've run into that problem with Illustrator before, and its a pet peeve. Why Illustrator handles memory and large files so poorly, and Photoshop (made by the same company, of course) does it so well, is beyond my comprehension. As I mention on my advice page, when I was making the BIG City of Greyhawk map, the .psd saved file got over 180MB, and when Photoshop opened it... whoa! The "scratch" file (Photoshop's working temp file) would expand to well over 7 gigabytes!!! I actually had to buy a larger harddrive. Big, yes, but Photoshop never had a problem working with that. However, when I tried to import a 40mb flattened file into Illustrator, forget it! Illustrator would instantly fold like a house of cards in an earthquake. I had to use a very low resolution jpg, do the map tags (text, symbols, etc) over that, send the high-res map as a separate file, and let WotC's graphics people worry about merging them. All programs have a numerical limit to the number of layers, though (irrespective of file size), and I did run into Photoshop's limit once. I forget what it was, but that was an older version anyways, and I'm sure it's higher now. I easily got around it by merging some of the layers. No memory increases were ever necessary.
