Ki Wraps

3.5/d20/OGL

I think it's Fatespinner or Moff Rimmer who've talked about these. Basically, it's an enchanted material that wraps around (a monk's) hand and gives a monk's unarmed strike magic weapon enhancement/qualities, right? If so, does it use the "Glove" slot, or could the character still wear gloves? Also, how do you cost it- say, 200 gp for the masterwork material, and normal magic enchantment cost?

Ki straps do, in fact, take up the glove slot. I don't remember which book they are detailed in, but the spell used in their creation is magic fang instead of magic weapon so I believe they ended up being a little more expensive than normal for magic weapons.

OK, cheers FS! I didn't realize they were from a book; I thought it was something you'd made up.

Ok, I don't know about "Ki Straps". It makes sense, but I don't know that I have seen them printed. There are "Bracers of Striking" found in Magic of Faerun that do what you are talking about and they take up the bracers/armband slot. Again, I don't see why "Ki Straps" wouldn't exist, but I don't know that I have ever seen them.

Hope that helps.

As far as cost is concerned, it appears to me that the cost of items like amulets, gloves, bracers, etc are all part of the "normal" cost of creating the items unlike the costs for armor or weapons. Therefore, I don't see a problem with going off the charts for enhancing weapons without the cost of the weapon itself -- ie "+2 Flaming Ki Straps" should have a value of 18,000 gp.

I must now discover which book these items were featured in. I *KNOW* I have seen them printed in a WotC product SOMEWHERE and I'm 99.9% positive that it's in something I own.......

AHA! Page 77 of the Sword and Fist (a 3.0 splatbook for fighters and monks)!

That explains why I haven't seen it. Good detective work...

Thanks both for your help!

Ki straps have been reproduced for 3.5 in the Magic Item Compendium. They cost 5,000 gp and increase the DC of your stunning fists attacks by +2 (they dropped it from being +5 because it was way too high). Ki straps take up the hand body slot (that is the glove, gauntlet body slot) and don't give you an enhancement bonus to your attack rolls or damage as currently written, nor are they treated as magical attacks for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction. Ki straps that gave you this benefit (as well as a +1 to hit and damage) would cost you 2,000 gp extra.

huh. That's kind of bizzare, considering that a +1 enhancment bonus to unarmed/natural attacks granted by an amulet of mighty fists costs 6000. a +2 costs 24000... the bonus to natural / unarmed apparently triples the cost of an enhancement bonus, but without allowing for the really fun things like weapon special abilities.

of course, I've never liked that particular itemization, it makes very little sense in comparison to magical weapon damage - but I suppose it's semi-balanced against the monk's unarmed damage progression.

I don't know... I think it would be fair to create a normal weapon progression for magical handwraps/gloves that added enhancement bonuses for attack/damage and allowed weapon abilities.

I think the reason that the Amulet of Mighty Fists has such an inflated price is because of the item slot it occupies. Imagine a necklace that gave a fighter's melee attacks an enhancement bonus. The fighter could get an amulet that gave him +5 and then a sword that was simply +1 flaming, shock, holy, undead bane, etc. etc. thus effectively having a +5 flaming, shock, holy, undead bane, yadda yadda yadda weapon since the enhancement bonus would overlap. This would allow a character to stay 'within the rules' and yet effectively have epic-quality weapons without ACTUALLY being epic. Imagine a belt for a wizard that enhanced intelligence. There are very few belts that are useful for the wizard class. There's a reason for that. To suddenly expand the value of that particular slot should result in an inflated value.

I hope I made sense there.

There is also the fact that the Amulet of Natural weapons works for ALL natural weapons (right?)

So, a character with 2 claws, a bite and a tail-slap would effectively enchant 4 attacks with only one item slot.

This post stacks with Fatespinner's, btw. It just improves the power even more.

Sovereign Court

A necklace's bonus can be used by more than humanoid characters as well. Animal companions and the like can benefit from it, where most cannot wear handwraps. I like the idea of enhancing handwraps (or bracers) for monks rather than an amulet anyway, but hey, it worked for Jackie Chan.
