Do any of you supra-geniuses know if there's another word for those "word bubbles" in cartoons where the character is talking? I got this guy over here trying to write an essay and look all fancy.

How about "spherical soap residue containing character dialogue".

There's intellectual then there's snarky.
That's snarky and I applaud it but we're trying to put on airs over hyah and look fauncy.

The only other phrase I've heard of to describe such is "thought balloon". Or you could call it a "dialogue balloon" maybe. By the way, what exactly does "snarky" mean?

Liberty's Edge

I don't know.
Everybody just calls me that, and says my butt is intelligent.

I've always referred to them as "speech balloons".

I like speech balloon. It works. You write speech balloon in an essay and the readers know what you're talking about. Thanks.

Yep. Speech balloons, speech bubbles, dialogue balloons, or word balloons are all correct.

And then there is indeed the thought bubble.

Word balloon and thought balloon are the ones I have heard used most.
