1st edition module X1 - Isle of dread

Savage Tide Adventure Path

My group is begining Sea wyvrens wake soon and I recently handed out Lariss vanderborens journal for hte PC's to study. One of them told me privatly that he has played through the old X1 1st edition module the Isle of dread. I was wondering if this will hinder the campaign by giving him Out of character knowledge/spoilers about the plot? I havent read X1 so Im not sure... anyone know?

No. X1 is significantly different. The only thing he'll have over the others is to maybe, when they encounter a Phanaton, be able to go "hey, it's a Phanaton!"

okay, lol that definatly isnt an advantage ... I was wondering if some of the enemies are the same though?

Liberty's Edge

Your Pc may also know of the Kopru threat. But that is not much to worry about. He may know of a few tribes and locations but this plot and the original Black Pearl and The Shadow Pearls from the new path are different. Some of the adventure's locations well be nostalgic to him but this is a whole different adventure.

I would also say that this knowledge will not ruin much - he will recognize some names, the villages and some monsters, but what I have seen up to now, it is different enough that this will not ruin the fun.
Thats the point of those nostalgic adventures: The sources are easily recognized, but then used differently so that those who played the originals can have fun, too. Otherwise, you could just dig out the originals and play them again.

yes, he said he remebers an aquatic race, that lives under a volcano and has the entire island under their mind control, and the source of their power is a black pearl...

Well, that black pearl will lead him completely astray in this case...

Dark Archive

So the pc's adventuring grandpa used to tell him stories about the isle of dread and the infamous black pearl when the pc was just a lad? Lots of options to have some fun with this :)

Now that is a nice idea - the player can bring his half-forgotten knowledge of the old adventure into play, and it furthers the role-playing. That could be the best way to go.

Liberty's Edge

The pc. should make up some crazy stuff to freak out the other pc's. Give him xp. bribes to do so.

Silver Crusade

wow, the idea of a grandfather or in my case a old sea dog that comes along on the Sea Wyvern that did the "orginal" X1 adventure sounds great, I'll have to remember that when the time comes for him to 'relate' his tale to the PCs.

thanks for the idea!!!

Perhaps something similiar could be done with "Torrents of Dread".

I agree completely. The panic induced in the players is priceless, although when they discover he doesn't really know anything might backfire. I'm still trying to decide if I want to do some of the original C1 on the way there. My party is currently stewing for 2 weeks after Vanthus trapped them in Parrot Island.

Does anyone know if there is a C1 conversion to 3.5 (or even 3). I have the original, but am not sure if I want to go through the effort of advancing it. I found a few of the old classic modules on the web like the A1-4 series and C2.
