I was wondering if there's any difference (aside from format and availability) between the Alternity: Player's Handbook Preview Edition PDF available in the store, and the actual Player's Handbook book that the other people in my group are using. The 'Preview Edition' part makes me a little leery that it's some kind of 'basic rules' or a demo or something. Thanks in advance.

I don't know if the contents are identical to the regular edition, but I can tell you it's a hefty 258-page product with color throughout.

There was an early edition of the book printed before the main commercial run of the game. It had a black cover with a stylized silver "A" emblem with an infinity symbol in it, rather than the logotype used for the rest of the product line.
There were, from what I understand, a number of changes between that rare early edition of the game and the more commonly-seen book that matches the Gamemaster Guide. Improvemets to the rules, and so on (based in part on the feedback from that early release, if I'm not mistaken).
I don't know for sure if that's what you've found, but I would guess as much. :)
What Mr. West said: they're almost the same book. The fluff is the same, the (interior) illustrations are the same, but some of the crunchy bits have been tweaked slightly.
The pre-release edition is cool if you happened to have bought it at Gen Con back in the day. The release edition is only very slightly different.
