I have a very cautious group. so what if they don't take the statue - the fighter, who 'leads by example' have seen Indiana Jones too many times. I can see him being too protective of the rest of the group and telling them not to take it. in other trap infested adventures, he's gone so far as to tie up a Kender PC to avoid him setting off traps already - after the sacophagus... mean that same kender might be an easy way for Malcanthet to get it into the party's bags.. but what about other groups

I think the gnome, Urol, would likely take it...surreptitiously if the players are over-cautious...later, when they need it, Urol can shepishly reveal that he took it...

Like the adventure states, if ignored the idol will be returned one way or another into the hands of the PCs.
As a DM, I would have the PCs wash-up/land upon the Isle of Dread, and then start to find all their bags, backpacks, barrels and boxes wash up on the shore. Opening the first bag/backpack up, the PCs find the golden statuette staring right at them. No explanations or reasons given, it's just there... perhaps one of life's little mysteries? :-)

But doesn't he stay in the other room to scetch it as the PCs go on (or did I misinterpret)
He *wants* to stay in the other room, and is reluctant to leave, but after a basilisk, a wall of fire, and perhaps even a will-o-wisp, he's likely to follow the PCs for his own safety...he's no fool.
I would roleplay him like a child at disneyland: Every room a new "attraction" that he wants to stay at forever, bummed about leaving then right back to giddy in the next room...
