Insanity

Shackled City Adventure Path

A PC in my campaing have the Touched in the Head trait which I use to induce some dreams of past and future events. Now they found Zenith who more or less have the same "problem" and seems to be mentaly ill. Is there any Insanity rules for when that PC confront their dreams comming true? (I've checked the Insanty rules variant from the SRD but they are very much Mythos oriented). What do you think? Is there anybody who has used some insanity rulesf or this situation?

Q (sorry for my bad english)

I'm not sure, but I think either Unearthed Arcanna, Lord of Madness, or Heroes of Horror have rules about insantiy.

They are in Unearthed Arcana which, if you don't have it, has some other outstanding variant rules and is well worth buying.

I think the OP was looking at the rules from Unearthed Arcana. As far as I know the SRD madness rules came out of UA.

That said I think the madness rules presented in UA with a bit of work might be modified to what you need. Also I know that the Wheel of Time RPG had some insanity rules--I don't have the book handy at the moment and I'm not familiar enough with that rule to know how it might be applied to your problem but you might check it out if you have access to the book.

One of the PCs in my campaign has this trait. However, I'm using it to foreshadow stuff through dreams from Adimarchus.

In my next game, I will have the mad PC dream of the fall of part of Celestia into the Abyss layer of Occipitus. He won't know what any of this means (he's only at Drakthar's Way) but it will be nice when he is able to link stuff up during Test of the Smoking Eye.

During the dream, a creature of Adimarchus' description will fly towards him while he stands in Occipitus and he will suddenly wake screaming. The rest of the party will wake and it is at this time when Adimarchus will come through a tear in the fabric of the world.

He will make short work of the party (will shock them probably) and leave the mad PC for last. Just as Adimarchus delivers the fatel blow...the PC will wake up for real; This was also part of the dream. :)

It should make the party feel mighty relieved but at the same time thinking what the hell was that! I realise that all the players will have knowledge of the mad character's dream but it's the only way to make this work and he would tell them what happened anyway.

One of my players *is* Adimarchus. Or, well, half of an escape attempt. So to speak.

See, Adimarchus' insanity has been leaking out, right? Well, I had him 'connect' very strongly to a woman, and in a rush of insanity and a very big effort on his caged self, he managed to spark a pseudo-life in her, and she would have birthed a child. Except the angelic half of Adimarchus' personality was against this event (which really was a sort of magical assault) and interfered. The result was a split - just as Adimarchus is very much a dual being, the woman instead 'birthed' a pair of twins, a boy and a girl. The angelic half of Adimarchus tried to shield them all from Adimarchus' insanity, and filter out the evil (not that the angelic side is sane or good either, but its deluded into thinking it is) and the shreds of Adimarchus that made it through and into these two beings were conflicted at best.

So, the girl - Addy - and the boy - Markus - ended up appearing in the middle of this woman's room. The woman was now completely insane, and Markus - the 'second half' was barely a complete being (the angelic half of Adimarchus succeeded in sheilding out the evil only on the boy - but that didn't leave much).

Addy woke, in the form of a young human woman, realized what was going on, framed Markus as a lunatic that did something horrible to this now insane woman, and fled. The confused and half-insane Markus was nearly lynched by the town, until a visitor - Addy - arrived and offered to care for both of the mad people.

She bided her time, played around with Markus' memories, and eventually realized that although Adimarchus and she were one, she was an individual as well, and very very much so less powerful (I basically turned her into a Bard/Mindbender from 'Complete Arcane'). She sure didn't want to risk her neck, so she manipulated Markus' memories to have him wander off, with the eventual drive to get to Cauldron, be an adventurer, and triggered dreams in him that would lead him to attempting to track down a way to free Adimarchus for real.

If he learned how and did so, fantastic, she could reunite with her 'parent' and claim all the credit as it was due. If he learned how and failed, she at least would know how. If he didn't learn how, he might at least give her some clues.

So, Markus - who is a PC who calls himself Crake and has absolutely fabricated memories of his childhood - but has just begun to stumble onto the truths of his past - thought he was going mad from the dreams he was having, dreams Addy had planted on a timer for him, and now he's thinking that his whole life has been false (and he's right), or that someone has tampered with his whole home own (wrong). When Addy shows up in town in the hands of Kaurophon, who saved her from a roaming demon attack (or rather, teamed up with her once Addy learned of the smoking eye issues), her previous encounters with the group as the woman Crake was sure was his sister - but isn't - was an easy "in" for the group to like and trust Kaurophon.

Now she's busy charming key members of the party druid's followers, and waiting for the group to get back from Occipitus. Once they do, and she learns how to get to the Smoking Eye template, she's going to run off with the Stormblades, all freshly charmed and under her sway, and grab that template for herself.

So by the time the end of the tale rolls around, Crake/Markus is going to be racing his sister Addy to open the cage Adimarchus is in - he to destroy Adimarchus, she to free him.

And both to see if they can even exist once he's out.

I must say, the group is having a blast trying to figure out if Crake is nuts, or if there was someone else named Markus, or..?
